Varnell, 82, of White Hall, Ark., died Aug. 23, 2001, at his home. He was born June 30, 1919, in Logan County, Ark., to the late Ira and Virginia Rose Varnell. He was a millwright with the Pine Bluff Arsenal prior to his retirement. He was a member of Bethany Missionary Baptist Church. He served in the United States Army during World War II. During his military service he received the Presidential Unit Citation, World War II Victory Medal, European, African and Middle East Campaign Medal with four stars for Normandy, the Battle of the Bulge, the Rhineland, and Germany. He also received the Army Good Conduct Medal, Two Bronze Stars, and the Purple Heart. He was a Medical Corps Field Medic. He was chaplain of the American Legion at White Hall and a charter member of the White Hall Volunteer Fire Department. He loved his garden and fishing. He is survived by his wife: Freeda Swint Varnell of White Hall, whom he marred Nov. 13, 1943; two sons: Robert Varnell of White Hall and Roger Varnell of Sheridan; one sister: Linda Holderfield of Little Rock; and eight grandchildren. Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. on Aug. 25, in the chapel of Cranford Funeral Home of White Hall with Brothers Tom Hover and Lloyd Roper officiating. Burial was in Memorial Park Cemetery.
