J. C. Field. Among the many wealthy farmers of Greene County, Ark., well worthy an
honorable place in these columns may be mentioned Mr. Field, who was born in Cross
County, Ark., in 1849, and is the fourth in a family of six children born to John and
Catherine (Curtis) Field. who were born, reared and married in Maury County, Tenn.,
where the father was engaged in tilling the soil. In 1848 he removed with his family
to Arkansas, purchased a tract of 160 acres, which he improved, and then sold out and
moved to Poinsett County, in 1875, where he bought a farm, on which he died, in 1880.
His wife died while they were residing in Cross County. J. C. Field received the
education and rearing that usually fall to the farmer's boy, and at the age of
twenty-four years began farming for himself, making his first crop on Buffalo Island.
The next year he came to Greene County, and from time to time purchased land until he
became the owner of 560 acres of some of the best land in the county. He cleared
about 175 acres of timber land, and now has at least 200 acres under cultivation. He
has erected good buildings on his property, set out orchards, and has done general
farming, raising cotton and the cereals, and this year has devoted about sixty acres
to corn and 140 to cotton. He has some good stock, and his first labors are meeting
with deserved success. In 1874 he was united in marriage to Miss Mary Gulches, by
whom he has two children: Jefferson and James.
