George A. Gramling is classed among the successful tillers of the soil and
stockmen of Cache Township, Greene County, Ark., of which he is a native, having been
born in the year 1859. He is the ninth of eleven children born to Richard and Cynthia
(Brannon) Gramling, whose birthplace was in South Carolina. They were married in that
State, and in 1856 came to Greene County, Ark, settling on the east side of Crowley's
Ridge, where they acquired a large tract of land, 200 acres of which were under
cultivation. Here he erected a building, set out orchards, and made many other
improvements, his attention being also largely given to the propagation of stock. He
had a blacksmith's shop on his farm and made the most of the farming tools for this
section. During his long residence in the county he became well known and highly
respected. He died at the age of sixty-three years, in 1882. His widow is still
living. [p.140] The paternal grandfather also came to Greene County, Ark., and became
the owner of 200 acres of wild land, which he improved and on which he resided until
his death. George Gramling was reared to farm labor, and at the age of twenty-two
years began farming for himself, buying, at the time of his father's death, the
interest in the home property of all the heirs except two, and is now the owner of
the old homestead, which consists of 640 acres. He has opened about thirty acres, and
in partnership with his brother John, in 1888, erected a saw and grist-mill, and a
cotton-gin, doing that year an excellent business, which promises to increase as time
goes on. He carries on a general farming, and has about seventy acres in cotton, and
100 acres in corn. In 1882 he was married to Miss Lucy Pevehouse, a native of
Arkansas, by whom he has three children: Thomas, Bertie and John. The family attend
the Methodist Church.
