BOWLING The history of the Bowling (Bolin) family begins with Thomas and Sarah Bowling, born in North Carolina in 1803 and 1801 respectively. In 1850 'this family was living in Fayette County, Tennessee and theirchildren were: Burgess(Burgis), 1829;Conelius W., 1831; Charity, 1833; MaryJ., 1836; Hyram G., 1839; and Sarah A., 1846. Sometime during the 1850's the Bowling family moved to Greene County and took up residence in St. Francis Township. By 1860 Sarah Bowling, wife of Thomas, had apparently died. Thomas' children, Mary, Sarah, and Hyram G., were still living with their father at this time. Burgess Bowling married a woman named Mary, born in Tennessee in 1828. In 1860 Burgess and Mary were living in St. Francis Township near Thomas Bowling. Their children at this time were: C.A. (a daughter), 1852; John H., 1854; Na ncy J., 1857; and M.T. (a daughter), 1859. By 1880 Burgess Bowling and his family were living in Poland Township and several more children had been added to the household: William, 1863; Mary E., 1864; Hiram A., 1866; Sally (Sarah), 1868; Edward, 1870; and Leroy, 1872. John H. Bowling, son of Thomas, married Sarah S. Cupp in Greene County on Feb. 2, 1878. Sarah was eighteen years of age at the time. Sarah was the daughter of Jacob and S.A.E. Cupp, born in Georgia and Tennessee in 1833 and 1832 respectively. At the time of Sarah's birth her parents were residents of St. Francis Township. As of 1880 John H. and Sarah S. Bowling had one child, Joseph, born in 1879. Conelius W. (C.W.) Bowling, son of Thomas, married a woman named Anne, born in Tennessee in 1840. As of 1880 they lived in Poland Township near John H. and Burgess Bowling. In 1850 another Bowling (Boling) family lived near Thomas and Sarah Bowling in Fayette County, Tennessee. This was the family of David and Lucinda Boling, born in Tennessee and Missouri in 1820 and 1823 respectively. Their children at this time were: William J., 1837; Mary, 1841 : Louisa A.. 1845: and Nancy E., 1848. BRAMLET It will be noted that some of the Bramlet people dealt with in Volume I lived in the state of Missour i at one time. Their exact place of residence in that state is not known with certainty but it is believed that they once lived in Ralls County. It is thought that some of the Bramlet people stayed in Ralls County while others migrated to Greene County, Arkansas. Two Bramlet(Bramblet) families are listed in the 1850 census for Ralls County, Missouri. Thesp are the families of Henry and Reuben Bramlet: Henry Bramlet was born in Kentucky in 181 1 . Hiswife, Elizabeth, was born in Virginia in 1825. Their children in 1850 were: Nancy J., 1842; James H., 1845; Mary A., 1846; and Sarah E.. 1850. All these children were born in Missouri. Reuben Bramlet was born in Virginia in 1 785. The name of his wife is not known. Other persons living in his household in 1850 were: Nancy A. Bramlet (born in Kentucky in 1826) and John A. Bramlet (born in Missouri in 1832). The families of Henry and Reuben Bramlet lived next to each other in Ralls County. Thus it seems possible that Reuben was the father of Henry. The 1830 census of Missouri shows that Reuben was already a resident of Ralls County at that time. BRANNON Joseph Brannon was born in Tennessee in 1805. His wife, Mary, was born in the same state in 181 0. In 1850 the family was living in Lincoln County, Tennessee and their children were: Jane, 1833; John J., 1835; Eliza, 1837; Nancy, 1840; Margaret E.. 1 844; William A., 1845; and Joseph, 1848. At some time during the 1860's the Brannon family moved to Greene County and settled in St. Francis Township. By 1870 Joseph Brannon Sr. had died and Mary was left as the head of the household. Nancy, Margaret, William and Joseph Jr. were still livin gwith their mother at this time. William Brannon married a woman named Harriet, born in Tennessee in 1859. In 1880 the family was living in Poland Township and their children were: John, 1873; Oscar, 1876; and William. 1880. In 191 6 William and Harriet Brannon were living at 719 We st Main in Paragould . Oscar Brannon and Miss Stacy Brannon were members of the same household. William and Harriet Brannon are buried at the Owen Chapel Cemetery west of Paragould. William's marker shows dates of 1846 and 1918. The markerfor Harriet bears dates of 1853 and 191 7. Demerida M. J. Brannon, son of William and Harriet, is buried ne arby. His marker shows dates of 1873 and 1889. BREWER I Nathaniel D.N. Brewerwas born in North Carolina in about 1817. His wife, Alsa(Ailsey. Alcia, Alice), was born in the same state in 1823. In 1850 the familywas living in Benton County. Tennessee and their children were: James, 1838; Martha, 1841 ; Joh n, 1843; Nancy, 1848; and William. 1849. In 1880 Nathaniel and Alsa Brewer were living in Henderson CountyTennessee and at this time the other members of their household were: Joseph R., 1853; Edmond, 1856; Panta. 1859; and William E., 1878. William E. was born in Arkansas but all the other children were born in Tennessee. The fact that William E. was born in Arkansas would seem to indicate that the family moved to Arkansas. then back to Tennessee, and again to Arkansas. Edmond Brewer, son of Nathaniel, married awoman named Eliza A., born in Tennessee in 1862. In 1900 they were living in Hurricane Township and their children were: Aaron J., 1882: Minnie G.. 1883: Nancy N., Arthur L., 1886; Mollie A., 1890; William D. , 1892; Benjamin F., 1895; Cornelius A., 1897. Nathaniel and Alsa Brewer were also members of the household at this time. and the census record specifically indicates that they were the parents of Edmond Brewer. The record also shows that Nathaniel's father was born in Georgia and his mother, in Virginia. Both of Alsa's parents were born in North Carolina. Some persons bearing the name of Brewer are buried at the Harvey's Chapel and New Friendship Cemeteries in northern Greene County. BREWER II William F. Brewerwas born in Tennessee in 1850. Hiswife, Margaret, was born in the same state in 1854. In 1880 this familywas living in Henderson County, Tennessee and theirchildren were: Doling J., 1876; Rowland, 1877; and Mary R., 1879. The Brewer family moved to Greene County in about 1885 and settled in Hurricane Township. By 1900 several more children had been added to the household: James A., 1880; Midian, 1882; William J., 1887; Margrath B., 1889; Nancy E., 1891 ; and Zipponia, 1894. Edward Brewer(nephew of William F., born in 1878) was also a member of the household. BROCK Charles Brockwas born in Georgia in 1825. His first wife, Cynthia, was born in Tennessee in 1831 . In 1850 theywere living in EastArmuchee in WaIkerCounty, Georgia. They had no children at this time. They lived in the same neighborhood with the famil ies of Atlas Danley, John Bowlin, and John C. Treadaway all of whom later moved to Greene County (see BOWLIN and TREADAWAY, Vol. I, and DANLEY, Vol. II). Apparently Charles Brock's first wife died during the 1850's. Charles married a woman named Elizabeth J., born in Alabama in 1835. In 1870 the family was living in Cache Township and their children were: James T., 1851; John R., 1853; Martha J., 1854 ; William J., 1858; Margaret E., 1859; Nancy H., 1861 ; Catherine, 1863; Charles, 1864; Rebecca, 1867; and Luphemia, 1869. JamesT. Brock was born in Georgia and John R. Brock was born in Illinois. All the younger children were born in Missouri, with the exception of Luphemia who was born in Arkansas. Evidently Charles Brock's second wife died during the 1870's. Charles married Lua Anna Thintis in GreeneCountyon Dec.26, 1879. In 1880 Charles and Lua Anna were living in CacheTownship. Bythis time one more child had been added to the family: Elizabeth, born in 1872. Mary Isreal, astep- daughter born in 1874, was also a member of the household. John R. Brock, son of Charles, married Roxianna Bowling in Greene County on Nov. 30, 1880. Roxianna was eighteen years of age at the time. She was the daughter of Nathaniel and Frances Bowling, both born in about 1830 in South Carolina and North Caro lina respectively. BUTLER W.G. Butler was born in Tennessee in 1830. His wife, Ann, was born in North Carolina in 1828. In 1850 the family was living in Gibson County, Tenriessee and at this time they had only one child: Adaline, born in 1850. During the 1870's the Butler family moved to Greene County and settled in Union Township. In 1880 their children at home were: John G., 1861 ; Margaret J., 1863; Martha, 1865; and Mary, 1873. A daughter born in 1869 was also a member of the household , but her name is not clear in the record. W.G. Butler is buried at the Gainesville Cemetery and his marker shows dates of 1830 and 1889. There is no marker for Ann Butler. In 1850 another Butlerfamilywas living next to W.G. and Ann Butler in Gibson County. This was the familyof William ButlPr, born in North Carolina in 1789. William was apparently a widower. His children still at home at this time were: Susan, 1834; an d Narcissa, 1837. The proximity of these two families suggests a possible relationship. CLEMENTS Manning L. Clements was born in South Carolina in 1800. He married Nancy Pryor in Tuscaloosa County, Alabama on Sept. 8, 1824. Nancy was born in Tennessee in 1805. The Clements family was still living in Tuscaloosa County in 1850 and their children at home at this time were: Sarah, 1828; A.P. (a son), 1830; A.M. (a son), 1831; Liddia, 1834; William, 1835; Elizabeth, 1838; Carolina, 1840; Mary, 1843; Clementine, 1846; and Isaac P., 1848. All the children were born in Alabama. The 1850 census lists Manning Clements' occupation as "Baptist minister." The Clements family came to Greene County sometime between 1850 and 1858. Manning died on June 10, 1858 and was buried at Mt. Zion Cemetery in western Greene County. In 1860 Nancy lived in Salem Township and several of her children were still living with her. By 1870 only two of Nancy's children were still living at home. Several black servants were also living in the household at this time. They were: Thomas, 1832; Esther, 1846; Pete, 1850; Jack, 1860; and Henry, 1866. Thomas was born in Virginia and Esther and Pete were born in Alabama. Jack and Henry were born in Arkansas. In 1880 Nancy Clements was still living in Salem Township. Her daughter, Elizabeth, and son, Jacob, were living with her. The two black servants, Thomas and Jack, were also in the household. Nancy Pryor Clements died on April 24, 1885 and was buried at Mt. Zion Cemetery. William Clements, son of Manning, married Mary Williams on Jan. 24, 1876 in Greene County. Apparently this was the second marriage for William. Their children in 1880 were: John, 1868; Lucy, 1870; Nancy, 1874; Anna, 1877; ana Mattie, 1879. All were b orn in Arkansas. Thomas Clements was the respected black servant of the Clements family. It is said that he often took on the role of minister and conducted funerals for white people at Mt. Zion Baptist Church. Some of the history of the Clements family, as well as o f Mt. Zion Church, may be found in a booklet entitled The History of Mt. Zion written by the Rev. Robert C. Medaris in 1927. Rev. Medaris was the pastor of this Church at one time. At least twenty-seven persons bearing the name of Clements, either by birth or by marriage, are buried at Mt. Zion Cemetery. Rev. Medaris' booklet, "The History of Mt. Arkansas," is available at the public library in Jonesboro, CLOYS Charles P. Cloys was born in Tennessee in about 1824. H is wife, Mary, was born in the same state in 1833. In 1850 the family was living in Obion County, Tennessee and at this time they had no children. Mrs. Robert L. Cox of Memphis, Tennessee has possession of an Obion County, Tennessee newspaper clipping which provides information about the Cloys family: Charles P. Cloys (Cloyes) was born in Henry County, Tennessee. He married Mary Burns, apparently in Obion County, in about 1850. Charlesand Mary lived in a rural area ofthe Countyformany years before finally moving to Union City. Charles Cloys died in 1922 and was buried at the East View Cemetery in Union City. He had been a member ofthe Mt. Zion Methodist Church in Obion Countyfor manyyears. Hiswife, Mary, survived him. He was also survived by several of his children: (1 ) T hompson Cloys of Obion County, (2) Rev. Calvin Cloys of Paragould, Arkansas, (3) James Cloys of Bald Knob, Arkansas, (4) William Cloys of Memphis, Tennessee, (5) Mrs. Herman Dietzel of Union City, (6) Mrs. Josie Scates of Union City, and (7) Mrs. Dor a Whitefield of Cripple Creek, Colorado. In 1916 Rev. Alexander Calvin Cloys and his wife, Ella, were living at 620 West Garland in Paragould, Arkansas. Rev. She died in 1961 and was buried at Linwood next to her husband. Her marker indicates that she was born in 1872. COLLIER Charles Collier was born in Virginia in about 181 2. Hiswife, MaryJ. was born inTennessee in 1814. Marriage records of Williamson County, Tennessee show that Charles Collier married Mary J. Meadows on Feb. 9, 1832. In 1850 the Collier family was still living in Williamson County, Tennessee and their children were: Sarah J., 1834; William J., 1836; James H., 1839; John W., 1843; Joel A., 1846; and George W., 1849. There is no evidence that Charles and Mary J. Co llier ever came to Greene County; however it is known that at least one son, George W., migrated to this area. George W. Collier married a woman named Lutessia while still living in Tennessee. They later moved to Kentucky where their first two children were born. These were: Charles E., 1873; and Theophilus, 1874. In 1880 George and Lutessia Collier were living in Hurricane Township of Greene County and their nearest neighbors were the families of John F. Brewer, John M. England, James A. Livesay, and Jonathan Haislip. CORBETT David M. Corbett (Corbitt) was born in Tennessee in 1826. His wife Isabell A., was born in the same state in 1829. In 1850 the family was living in Jefferson County, Tennessee and at this time they had only one child: James T., born in 1850. Little is known of the history of the Corbett family. It is believed that they moved to Greene County during the 1880's. David and Isabell Corbett are buried at Hartsoe Cemetery west of Marmaduke. David's marker shows dates of 1826 and 1896. Isabell' s marker bears dates of 1827 and 1901 . James T. Corbett is also buried at this cemetery and his marker shows dates of 1850 and 1923. CORNMAN A. H. Cornman was born in Pennsylvania in 181 6. Hiswife, Margaret, was born in Illinois in 1823. In 1850 the family was living in Macoupin County, Illinois and theirchildren were:Sarah R., 1840; Olive P., 1847; and Hannah B., 1850. A. H.
