Lambert was born in Tennessee in 1822. His wife, Mary J., was born in the same state in about 1833. I n 1860 this fam ily was living i n Hardeman County, Tennessee in the vici nity of the village of Crainsville. Their children at this time were: James A., 1851; and Willia (a daughter), 1860. Frances Lambert, born in Tennessee in 1839, was also a memiber of the household. The Lambert family moved to Greene County during the 1860's and settled in St. Francis Township. By 1870 two more children had been added to the household: John J., 1862; and Thomas J., 1864. In 1880 John J. and Mary Jane Lambert were still livi ng in St. Francis Township and their sons, John and Thomas, were still in the household. John J. Lambert died in 1887 and was buried at the Linwood Cemetery in Paragould. Mary Jane died in 1902 and was buried at the same place. LANDRUM J. Landrum was born in Virginia in 1810. His wife, Emily, was born in Tennessee in 1817. In 1850 the family was living in Weakley County, Tennessee and their children were: William, 1838; Lucy, 1840; Monroe, 1 840; Edward, 1841; Samuel, 1843; J ackson, 1848; and Washington, 1 850. Edward Landrum married a woman named Mary A., born in North Carolina in 1 845. In 1870 they were living in Clark Township of Greene County and at this time they had only one child, James E., born in 1869. In 1880 the familywas living in Union Towns hipand bythistime one morechild had been added to the household: John C., born in 1874. Monroe (James Monroe) Landrum came to Greene County sometime between 1880 and 1900. In 1900 he was living in Clark Township. J.M. Landrum is buried at the Linwood Cemetery in Paragould and his marker shows dates of 1840 and 1905. Some persons bearing the name of Landrum are buried at the New Friendship Cemetery north of Paragould. In 1850 another Landrum family lived next to J. and Emily Landrum in Weakley County, Tennessee. This was the family of J. and Mary Landrum, born in Virginia and Tennessee in 1819. Their children were: John, 1837; Sarah, 1839; and Newton, 1847. LANE John P. Lane was born in North Carolina in 1823. His wife, Hiphziva, was born in Tennessee in 1828. In 1850 the family was living in Madison County, Tennessee and their children at this time were: Martha J., 1846; and Joseph A., 1848. The Lane family moved to Greene County in about 1865 and settled in St. Francis Township. By 1870 several more children had been added to the family: Sarah E., 1852; Nancy, 1855; Irene P.. 1858; William O., 1860; Emaline, 1863; and Ann, 1867. Emaline was born in Missouri and Ann, in Arkansas. All the other children were born in Tennessee. In 1880 John P. and Hiphziva Lane were still living in St. Francis Township and four of their children (Irene, William, Emaline, and Ann) were living with them. William O. Lane marred Cornelius E. Webb in Greene County on Jan. 11, 1 882. Cornelius was the daughter of Andrew and Sinie C. Webb (see WEBB, Volume I). John P. and Hiphziva Lane are buried at the Pine Knott Cemetery in western Greene County. John's marker shows dates of 1822 and 1892. The marker for Hiphziva bears dates of 1827 and 1888. LEDBETTER A sketch for the Thomas and Frances Ledbetter family appears in Volume I of this book and the reader is referred to that Volume. Since the original sketch was written, some new information has been discovered regarding this family. In 1850 Thomas and Frances Ledbetter were living in Chatham County, North Carolina and their children were: Simpson, 1842; William, 1845; Catherine, 1847; and Constanza, 1849. Other children were born after 1850 and these are named in Volume (. Constanza A. Ledbetter first married Christopher C. Wright, born in Virginia in 1842. In 1880 this family was living in Hurricane Township and their children were: Lilly, 1873; Billy (a son), 1875; Katie, 1877; Thomas, 1879; and John, 1879. Robe rt M. Wright, born in Tennessee in 1857 was also a member of the household. Christopher C. Wright died in 1889 and was buried at the Hartsoe Cemetery west of Marmaduke. Constanza later married Dr. S.H. Lytton. Dr. Lytton died in 1905 and Constanza remained unmarried during the rest of her life. She died in 1922 and her obit uary appeared in the May 17, 1922 issue of the Paragould Soliphone. She died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Kate Glisson of Halliday. She was survived by five other children: (1) Will Wright of 208 West Emerson in Paragould, (2) John Wright of Pa ris, Texas, (3) Thomas Wright of El Dorado, Illinois, (4) Wyse Wright of Mitchell's Point in Greene County, and (5) Mrs. Emma ( Emily) Livesay of Marmaduke. Constanza Ledbetter Wright Lytton is buried at the Hartsoe Cemetery. Her tombstone shows her first name as "Tanney." LEGGETT Bithel Leggett was born in North Carolina in 1821. His wife, Cloah, was born in the same state in 1822. In 1850 the family was living in Martin County, North Carolina and their children were: Milley, 1833; Noah, 1 837; Bithel S., 1841; Simon, 1846; and MiIIy A., 1849. Ellen Griffin, born in North Carolina in 1827, was also a member of the household at this time. Bithel and Cloah Leggett moved to Greene County and settled in Hurricane Township sometime during the 1870's. In 1880 the other members of their household were: Milly Leggett. 1850; Louisa Leggett, 1869; and Henry M. Leggett, 1880. LIGHT The history of one branch of the Light family begins with John R. Light, born in Georgia in 1804. His wife, Crissa, was born in 1807, but her birthplace is not known. In 1850 John and Crissa were living in Forsythe County, Georgia in District 31. At this time their children at home were: Newton, 1833; Mary A., 1835; Pleasant G., 1837; John M., 1839; Daniel, 1841~ , James M., 1843; Laura L., 1847; Joseph C., 1847; and Benjamin, 1848. All these children were born in Georgia. There is no evidence that John and Crissa Light ever came to Greene County, but it is known that their son Pleasant G., did come to this area. Pleasant's first wife, Flora, was born in Georgia in 1838. In about 1870 they arrived in Greene County an d settled in Cache Township. In 1880 their children at home were: Charles 1862; James, 1864; Jason, 1866; Nettie, 1868; Mollie, 1870; George, 1872; and Nora 1877. Mollie, George, and Norawere born in Arkansas. All the olderchildren were born i n Georgia. Apparently Pleasant's wife died soon after 1880 and he married M rs. Ada Hicks on Oct. 1, 1883. Ada was born in Tennessee in 1858. Jason Light, son of Pleasant, was County Judge for Greene County for several years during the early part of the 20th century. A number of the members of the Light family are buried at Mt. Zion Cemetery. Pleasant Light's marker shows dates of March 3, 1837 and June 7, 1889. James W. Light lived from June 15, 1863 to Dec. 23, 1942. He was the last of the older members of the Light family at the time of his death. The marker for Charles Light shows dates of May 11, 1861and April 7, 1889. LIVESAY William B. Livesay was born in Tennessee in 1808. His wife, Martha W., was born in the same state in about 1811. In 1850 the family was living in the state of Illinois. The county of their residence is not known with certainty; however, it is kno wn that nearly all of the Livesay people living in Illinois in 1850 were residents of Washington County. During the early 1850's the Livesayfamily moved to Greene County and settled in Union Township. In 1860 theirchildrenwere: Simeon W., 1837; David P., 1839; JamesA., 1842; MaryA.,1842; EmilyC., 1845; William F., 1 848; and RobertT., 1852. Robertwas born in Arkansas, but all the otherchildren were born in Illinois. In 1870 William B. and Martha Livesaywere living in CIarkTownship. Theirchildren(Mary, William, and Robert) were still living with them at this time. James A. Livesay married a woman named Emily F., born in North Carolina in 1851. In 1870 they were living in Union Township and at this time they had only one child, Mary P., born in 1870. By 1880 James and Emily were living in Hurricane Township and their children were: Rosetta, 1873; William, 1875; Charles W., 1876; and Ethel M., 1879. David P. Livesay married a woman named Mary F., born in Tennessee in 1 839. In 1870 they were living in Clark Township and their children were: Martha, 1867; and Fanny M., 1868. A black girl named Jane McNab born in Tennessee in 1854, was also a member of the household. In 1880 David and Mary were living in Union Township and by this time four more children had been added to the family: Arthur, 1871; Walter, 1873; James, 1875; and Annie V., 1877. Several of the members of the Livesay families are buried at the Hartsoe Cemetery west of Marmaduke. James A. Livesay is buried here and his marker shows dates of 1840 and 1892. Charles Livesay is also buried at Hartsoe and his marker shows dates o f 1876 and 1935. Emily F. Livesay is buried at the Linwood Cemetery in Paragould. Her marker shows dates of 1851and 1930. LOVELADY John Lovelady was born in Tennessee in 1787. H is wife, Mary, was born in the same state in 1789. In 1850 the family was living in Hamilton County, Tennessee and their children were: Molinda, 1826; Elbert, 1831; Ephraim, 1833; and John, 1836. In 1850 another Lovelady family lived next to John and Mary Lovelady in Hamilton County, Tennessee. This was the family of Joseph and Deborah Lovelady, born in Tennessee and Virginia in 1820 and 1822 respectively. Their children at this time were: J ohn, 1843; Robert, 1845; and Manah, 1847. There is some reason to believe that Joseph was the son of John and Mary Lovelady. There is no evidence that John and Mary Lovelady ever came to Greene County but it is known that their two sons, John and Elbert, came to this area and settled in Union Township during the 1850's. Elbert Lovelady married a woman named Isabella, born in Alabama in 1836. In 1860 their children were: Joshua, 1855; and John D., 1859. Both children were born in Arkansas. John Lovelady, son of John and Mary, married a woman named Eliza, born in North Carolina in 1842. In 1860 their children were: Sarah E., 1857; and Henry L. 1860. Amanda Taylor, born in 1851, was living with the family at this time. Joseph Lovelady, possibly a son of John and Mary, and hiswife, Deborah, moved to Greene County during the 1850's and settled in Union Township. By 1860 two more children had been added to the~ family: Joseph, 1854; and Sevier, 1857. Both children wer e born in Arkansas. Robert Lovelady, son of Joseph and Deborah, married Margaret A. Morgan in Greene County on Dec. 29, 1879. Robert's occupation is listed in the 1880 census as "physician." Sevier Lovelady, son of Joseph and Deborah, married Josephine Boyd in Greene County on Nov. 2, 1882. Josephine was twenty-one years of age at the time. The burial places of most of the members of the Lovelady families are not known. However, Sevier Lovelady is buried at the Beech Grove Cemetery in western Greene County and his marker shows dates of 1857 and 1926. The marker for his wife, Josephine , bears dates of 1861and 1917. LYTLE Thomas Lytle Jr. was born in North Carolina in about 1815. His wife, Mary, was born in the same state in 1818. In 1850 the family was living in McDowell County, North Carolina and they had only one child: John M., born in 1847. Apparently Thomas Lytle Jr. and his family came to Greene County sometime between 1880 and 1900. In 1900 John M. Lytle was living in Clark Township. In 1916 John M. Lytle and his family, were living at400 East Court in Paragould. John's occupation is listed, in the City Directory, as"timberman." Misses Mary and Martha Lytlewere living in the same household. Martha was a teacher at the West Side School and Mary was a clerk for the Bertig Store at this time. Martha C. Lytle died in 1908 and was buried at the Linwood Cemetery in Paragould. John M. died in 1931and was buried at the same place. Thomas Lytle Jr., father of John M., is also buried at Linwood and his marker indicates that he was born in 1816 and died at the age of seventy-three years. In 1850 another Lytle family was living next to Thomas and Mary Lytle in McDowell County, North Carolina. This was the family of George and Anna Lytle, both born in North Carolina in 1785. Susannah Lytle, born in North Carolina in 1818, was also a member of the household. MANNING Jacob Manning was born in North Carolina in 1811. Hiswife, Sarah B., was born in thesame state in the same year. In 1850 the family was living in Carroll County, Tennessee and their children were: Dinisa A., 1837; Richard F., 1839; Mary E., 1841; Edward K., 1843; Rachel H. T., 1845; Winfield C., 1848; and James M., 1850. R ichard F. Manning married a woman named Julia, born in Tennessee in 1845. By 1880 they had moved to Greene County and settled in Hurricane Township. At this time their children were: Mary, 1867; Marion (a son), 1868; Cally A., 1875; Richard, 1876; and Cecil, 1879. Edward Manning married awoman named Eugenia, born in Tennessee in 1862. In 1880 theywere living in Hurricane Township of Greene County. There were no children in their household at this time. MARKHAM Benjamin Markhamwas born in North Carolina in 1804. His wife, Rhoda, was born in the same state in 1807. In 1850 the familywas living in that part of Orange County which later became Durham County and their children were: Eliza, 1842; Felix, 184 4; James, 1846; Rufus, 1848; and Martha, 1850. Levi Markham, born in North Carolina in 1825, was living next to Benjamin and Rhoda at this time. Rufus Markham, son of Benjamin, married Maggie Stedman in Greene County on Nov. 13, 1880. James Dennis Markham, older brother of Rufus, married Vashito Newberry in Greene County on March 15, 1877. Vashito was the daughter of Samuel and Nancy W. New berry (see Volume I). The obituary of Dr. Rufus A Markham appeared in the July 9, 1919 issue of the Paragould Soliphone. Dr. Markham died in Waco, Texas. His wife, Margaret Stedman, wasthe daughter of`Nilliam C. Stedman. The Stedman family left Durham, North Carolina in 1860 and located in Jackson County, Arkansas. William C. had three brothers (Lon, Charles, and James) and a sister (Jennie) who married Richard Jackson (see Jackson II, Volume II). According to Dr. Markham's obituary, his children were: Edward, Clifton, and Porter. Porter died as an infant. After Maggie Markham died, Dr. Markham moved to Florida and later to Texas. In Texas he met and married Miss Kate Morris and they had one s on, Robert. As of 1916 J. Clifton Markham, son of Dr. Markham, was living (with his wife, Blanche) at720 South Main in Paragould. Clifton was employed as Cashier of the Paragould Trust Company at this time. MARTIN George W. Martin was born in South Carolina in 1825. In 1850 he was living in Walker County, Georgia in an area called East Armuchy and the other members of his household were: Milley, 1786; and Beverly (male), 1828. It is supposed that Milley was t he mother of both George and Beverly. Milley was born in South Carolina and Beverly, in Georgia. George W. Martin married a woman named Elizabeth while still living in Georgia. In about 1858 the family moved to Greene County and settled in Cache Township. As of 1860 theirchildren were: Mary S., 1854; Malinda, 1 856; Martha, 1859; and Alvin, 1860. The first two childran were born in Georgia and the second two, in Arkansas. In 1880 George and Elizabeth were still living in Cache Township and by this time three more children had been added to the family: Beverly, 1862; James 1864; and George W. Jr., 1867. A grand-daughter named Mary, born in 1879, was also present. In 1880 Beverly Martin (born in 1828) and his wife, Elizabeth O., were living in CacheTownship and at this time they had one child, Jasper, born in Arkansas in 1858. On June 14, 1882 Jasper married Eliza Watson in Greene County. Several other families came from Walker County, Georgia to Greene County, Arkansas during the 1850's (see BOWLIN, TREADAWAY, DANLEY, BROCK, and PACK in this Volume and in Volume I). McCASLIN James H. McCaslin (McCastlin) was born in Tennes~ee in 1827. His wife, Eliza Jane, was born in the same state in 1828. In 1850 the family was living in Hardin County, Tennessee and theirchildren at this time were: Epsitz, 1847; Mary A., 1848; and Joseph, 1850. The McCaslin family moved to Greene County during the 1870's and settled in Union Township. Their children at home in 1880 were: George W., 1866; Sarah, 1870; and Amanda, 1872. In 1850 another McCaslin family lived near James and Eliza McCaslin in Hardin County. This was the family of Grant A. and Ester McCaslin, born in Kentucky in 1828 and 1831respectively. The proximity of these families would suggest a possible relati onship. McCAULEY William McCauleywas born in North Carolina in 1787. Hiswife, Elizabeth, was born in Tennessee in 1791. In 1850 this family was living in Carroll County, Tennessee and their children still at home were Enos J., 1820; Elias, 1826; and Eliza, 1829. There is no evidence that William and Elizabeth McCauley evercame to Greene County; however, it is known that their son, Enos, came to this area sometime during the 1870's and settled in Hurricane Township. Enos McCauley married a woman named Martha, born in Tennessee in about 1832. In 1880 the family was living in Hurricane Township and their children still at home were: William, 1855; Calvin, 1858; and Judith, 1860. Enos' occupation is listed, in the census record, as "physician." Judith's occupation is listed in the record as "teacher." A grand- daughter, Lela, born in 1879, was living with the family at this time. Many of the members of the McCauley family are buried at the Hatsoe Cemetery west of Marmaduke. Dr. Enos McCauley's marker shows dates of 1820 and 1881. Calvin (C.E.) McCauley's marker shows dates of 1858 and 1900. The three wives of Dr. Calvin McCau ley are also buried at Hartsoe. William McCauley's marker bears dates of 1855 and 1882. In 1850 there was another McCauley family living very near William and Elizabeth McCauley in Carroll County, Tennessee. Thiswasthefamilyof Caivin J. and Louisa McCauley, born in North Carolina and Tennessee in 1819 and 1823 respectively. The childre n of Calvin and Louisa at this time were: Martin, 1846; and Mary E., 1848. McCLERKIN John McClerkin was born in South Carolina in 1816. His wife, Anna, was born in the same state in the same year. In 1850 this family was living in Tipton County, Tennessee and their children at this time were: Mary J., 1840; Elizabeth M., 1842; Marga ret, 1845; John K., 1846; and Sarah A., 1848. John K. McClerkin married a woman named Nannie A. while still in Tennessee. In about 1895 this family moved to Greene County and settled in St. Francis Township. In 1900 their children still at home were: Wilton R., 1878; Ray K., 1882; Ralph P., 1890; and Augustus H., 1893. All these children were born in Tennessee. Nannie A. McClerkin is buried at the Linwood Cemetery in Paragould. Her marker shows dates of 1859 and 1926. In 1850 another McClerkin family was living in Tipton County, Tennessee. This was the family of James McClerkin, born in South Carolina in 1788. McFALL John McFall was born in Tennessee in 1803. The name of his first wife is not known with certainty. In 1850 the family was living in Wayne County, Tennessee and the other members of the household were: Frances, 1818; Daniel, 1829; Nancy, 1833; Sarah , 1835; John, 1838; Irene, 1841; Mary, 1843; Ann, 1847; and Aaron, 1849. It is suspected that Frances was the second wife of John McFall. Aaron E. McFall married a woman named M illy E., born in Tennessee in 1 850. In 1880 this family was living in Friendship Township in Greene County. Their children at this time were: Mary, 1868; Martha E., 1870; Jonathan, 1872; William C., 1875; an d Buddie, 1879. In 1850 there were two other McFall families living near John McFall in Wayne County, Tennessee. One of these families was that of James D. and Elizabeth McFall, born in Tennessee and I ndiana in 1805 and 1816 respectively. The children in this f amily were: John, 1834; James, 1 836; Simon, 1839; Daniel, 1841; Joshua, 1843; and Washington, 1848. The otherfamilywas that of William and Hetty McFall, born in Tennessee and South Carolina in 1808 and 1813 respectively. The children in the family were: Mary, 1833; Gerry, 1836; William, 1838; Sarah, 1839; Paralee, 1845; John, 1847; and Louisa, 1849. McHANEY John H. McHaney (McKinney) was born in Tennessee in about 1820. His wife, Frances A., was born in South Carolina in 1824. John H. McHaney married Frances A. Edwards in Carroll County, Tennessee on Dec. 8, 1842. In 1850 the family was still living in Carroll County and their children at this time were: Napolean B., 1843; Lafayette, 1845; Frances E., 1847; and William, 1850. During the early 1860's the McHaney family moved to Greene County and settled in Friendship Township. By 1870 two more children had been added to the household: Martha J., 1855; and Sarah, 1858. Both children were born in Tennessee. By 1880 three other children had been born in the family: Thomas, 1874; Almedia, 1876; and Minnie E., 1879. All three were born in Arkansas. These five younger children were born of the union of John McHaney and his second wife, Amada Shearer. In 1880, Henry a nd Matilda J. Shearer, step children of John McHaney, were also members of this household. Lafayette McHaney married a woman named Nancy C. and in1870 they were living in Friendship Township near John and Amanda. At this time their children were: William Wiley, 1861; John, 1865; Avery Ann, 1867; and James, 1869. By 1880 four more children had been added to this household: Robert Lee, 1873; Samuel P., 1875; Oney A., 1877; and Susan, 1879. These four children were born in Arkansas. In 1916, Samuel P. McHaney was vice president of the Paragould Building and Loan Association. He and his wife, Bettie L., lived at 610 West Court at this time. John McHaney is buried at the New Friendship Cemetery and his marker shows dates of 1819 and 1909. Amanda M. McHaney is also buried there and her marker shows dates of 1838 and 1910. Lafayette and Nancy C. McHaney are buried at New Friendship; the dates on Lafayette's markerare not readable, but Nancy's marker shows dates of 1843 and 1901. In 1850 another McHaneyfamilywas living nearJohn H. and Frances A. McHaney in Carroll County, Tennessee. This was the family of James and Matilda McHaney, born in South Carolina in 18O3 and 1812 respectively. Their children at this time were: James H., 1836; John P., 1838: Francis M., 1840; William, 1842; Sarah L., 1844; Margaret, 1846; and Martha M., 1848. McKELVY John McKelvy was born in Tennessee in 1813. His wife, MaryAnn, was born in the same state in 1827. In 1850 the family was living in Benton County, Tennessee and their chidren were: Louisa, 1843; James, 1844; Mary, 1846; Martha, 1848; and George, 18 50. James K. McKelvy married awoman named Frances A., born in Tennessee in 1848. The family moved to Greene County during the 1870's and settled in Union Township. In 1880 theirchildren were: William, 1864; Tally(a daughter), 1866; Jasper, 1869; Alonzo , 1872; Horace, 1875; Henry, 1 875; and Adolphus L., 1878. Wiliam was born in the state of Illinois. The next three children were born in TennessE:e and the younger three, in Arkansas. James K. McKelvy was a minister. James and Frances McKelvy are buried at the Linwood Cemetery in Paragould. James' marker shows dates of 1844 and 1924. Frances' marker shows dates of 1848 and 1923. Alonzo McKelvy was also a minister. He and his wife, Vennie, are buried at Linwood Cemetery. His marker shows dates of 1871and 1936. Vennie's marker bears dates of 1875 and 1966. In 1916, Frances McKelvy, wife of Jams K., was living at 202 Highland in Paragould. Some of the McKelvy descendnats still live in Paragould at present. McLAUGHLIN Absalom McLaughlin was born in South Caroina in 1790. His wife, Rebecca, was born in North Carolina in 1785. In 1850 this familywas living in McNairy County, Tennessee and the other members of their household were: Louisa, 1821; William,l 831; Sa rah, 1834; and Napoleon, 1849. William McLaughlin came to Greene County some time between 1880 and 1 900. In 1900 he was living in Friendship Township of Greene County. Some persons bearing the name of McLaughlin are buried at the New Friendship Cemetery north of Paragould. In 1850 another McLaughlin familywas living nexttoAbsalom and Rebecca McLaughlin in McNairy County, Tennessee. This was the family of Wayne and Elia McLaughlin born in 1829 and 1827 respectivley. Wayne ws born in Tennessee, but the birthplace of Elia is listed as "unknown" in the census record. MEREDITH James B. Meredith was one of the early settlers of Greene County, Arkansas having arrived sometime before 1850. He was born in 1803. His state of birth is not known with certainty since some records indicate that it was Kentucky while other records show that it was Tennessee. His wife, Rebecca, was born in North Carolina in 1803. In 1850 James and Rebecca were living in St. Francis Township of Greene County and their children at home at this time were: Mary, 1832; Elizabeth, 1835; Jane, 1838; James F., 1840; and Thomas E., 1842. James F. Meredith married a woman named Martha A. J., born in Arkansas in 1847. As of 1880 this familywas living in Union Township and their children were: Mary M., 1868; John, 1870; Minnie, 1871; William L., 1873; George, 1875; Nancy B., 1877 ; and James, 1879. James F. died in 1908 and Martha, in 1924. Both are buried at the Fairview Cemetery. In 1880 Thomas E. Meredith was living in Union Township next to his brother. James. Both parents of Thomas and his sisters, Mary and Jane, were living in the same household at this time. However, Thomas married Cordelia Barr in Greene County on Augu st 10, 1885. In 1916 William L. Meredith and his wife, Ola, were living at 615 North Pruett in Paragould. William operated a confectionary at 107 West Court at this time. William is buried at the Linwood Cemetery and his marker shows dates of 1872 and 1917. The stone for Ola Meredith Gragg bears dates of 1877 and 1955. Some persons bearing the name of Meredith are also buried at the Finch and Liberty Cemeteries. Both these cemeteries are located in southwestern Greene County. MESSER John C. Messerwas born in Georgia in 1826. His wife, Sarah, was born in the same state in the same year. In 1850 the family was living in Butts County, Georgia and their children at this time were: John, 1846; Edmund, 1846; James, 1848; and Lewis, 1850. Apparently the Messerfamilies arrived in Greene County during the late 1 870's. By 1880 theywere living in Cache Township. In 1880 Sarah Messer was a resident of Cache Township and her son, William, was the only other member of her household. William was born in Mississippi in 1857. Edmund (Edmond) Messer married a woman named Estella, born in Alabama in 1856. In 1880 the family was living in Cache Township and their children at this time were: James, 1870; Charles, 1872; Henry, 1875; John, 1878; and Winney, 1880. Winney was born in Arkansas, but all the older children were born in Illinois. Lewis Messer married a woman named Margaret, born in Illinois in 1855. In 1880 theywere living in Cache Township and their children were: Jackson, 1875; Anna, 1877; and Lewis Jr., 1879. Jackson and Anna were born in Illinois, but Lewis was born in Arkansas. MILLER Robert R. Miller was born in Virginia in about 1810. His first wife, Permelia C., was born in Tennessee 1813. In 1850 the familywas living in Union Township of St. Francis County, Arkansas. The children in the household at this time were: Amanda Sw ank, 1832; Martha, 1835; Mary, 1 837; Jane C., 1839; Elizabeth, 1840; James, 1842; Jacob M., 1844; Virginia, 1846; and Robert C., 1849. By 1860 the Miller family had moved to Greene County, Arkansas and settled in St. Francis Township. By this time another child had been added to the household: W. D. (a son), born in 1851. Apparently Permelia Miller died sometime during the 1850's . In the 1860 census record Robert's wife is listed as Matilda, born in Tennessee in 1817. In 1870 Robert R. and Matilda Millerwere still living in St. FrancisTownship. William Millerwas the only child in the household at this time. Jacob M. Millerfirst married a woman named R. Ann, born in Kentucky in 1 851. In 1880 Jacob and Ann were living in Poland Township and their children were: Robert R., 1870; Noble M., 1872; William R., 1875; and Martha C., 1878. Robert Austin, bor n in Arkansas in 1849, was also a member of the household. Apparently R. Ann Miller died and Jacob M. married Mrs. Mollie Shelton in Greene County on March 18, 1882. W. D. Miller married a woman named Mary, born in Georgia in 1856. In 1880 they were living in Poland Township next to Jacob M. Millerand their children were: Olive, 1878; and Nancy, 1880. Hiram Step, Jacob's brother-in-law, was also present. Deed records of Greene County show that on Aug. 22, 1871R. R. Miller bought 120 acres of land from James B. Rowland. This.parcel of land was located about one-half mile south of what is now Kings Highway and just east of the present-day location o f the railroad in Paragould. Apparently Robert R. Miller died sometime during the 1870's. In 1880 Matilda was the head of her own household in Union Township. Two servants, Virginia Armstrong and Sarah E. Armstrong, born in Arkansas in 1862 and 1 865 respectively, were member s of the household. Two boarders, Almer E. and John R. Thompson, born in Arkansas and Tennessee in 1870 and 1866 respectively, were also present. MINER Joseph R. Miner(Minor) was born in Virginia in 1822. His wife, Elizabeth, was born in the samestate in 1826. In 1850 the familywas living in Monongalia County. Virginia and at this time they had one child, Casandra, born in 1849. Another Miner fam ily lived next to Joseph and Elizabeth Miner in 1850. This was the family of Samuel and Permelia Miner, born in Pennsylvania and Virginia in 1778 and 1789 respectively. The other members of this household were: Lydia and Manirva Miner, born in Virgi nia in 1828 and 1832 respectively. It seems possible that Samuel was the father of Joseph. During the late 1870's Joseph Miner moved to Greene County and settled in Blue Cane Township. His wife, Elizabeth, had apparently died by this time. In 1880 the other members of his household were: Joanna, 1842; Jefferson T., 1862; Louisa, 1867; and Sarah E. A., 1872. Joanna was apparently the second wife of Joseph Miner. Jefferson, Louisa, and Sarah were born in Alabama. Jefferson Miner, son of Joseph, married D. J. Wyatt in Greene County on June 4, 1884. MINETREE I Napoleon Minetree was born on March 27, 1846 in Nashville, Tennessee. His wife, Florence Cook , was born on Nov. 3, 1861in Christian County, Kentucky. They were married on Feb. 27, 1879 in Webster County, Kentucky. In 1880 this family was living in the Hickman District of Fulton County, Kentucky and the census record shows no children in the h ousehold at this time. However, it is known that their first child was born on August 30, 1880 and died soon afterward. The child is buried at the Poplar Grove Cemetery in Fulton County. In 1891the Minetreefamily moved to Greene Countyand settled in Paragould. In 1900 thechildren in the household were: Lula, 1881; Reuben, 1886; Robert, 1888; Dora, 1891; Ethleen, 1894; Margaret, 1 896; and Richard, 1899. A daughter named El izabeth, born in Kent ucky in 1884, died in Paragould in 1899. She was buried at Linwood Cemetery. Richard Minetree, son of Napoleon, married Ruth Vernon Esther in St. Louis, Missouri in 1922 and afterward the couple made their home in Poplar Bluff, Missouri. Ruth was a teacher of English at the Poplar Bluff High school. Richard H. Minetree, son of Richard and Ruth, is now a Professor of English at the Three Rivers Community College in Poplar Bluff. His brother, Harry, is a writer and lives at East Hampton, New York on Long Islnd. Another brother, Thomas, is a radiologist in Carbondale, Illinois. Richard Minetree Sr. died in 1974 and vras buried at the City Cemetery in Poplar Bluff, Missouri. Ruth died in 1979 and was buried at the same place. Reuben Forrest Minetree is buried nearby. Napoleon and Florence Minetree are buried at the Linwood Cemetery in Paragould. Napoleon's marker shows dates of 1846 and 1900. The markerfor Florence bears dates of 1861and 1939. Reuben and Julia Hawkins Cook, parents of Florence, are buried nearby. Reuben was a native of Caldwell County, Kentucky and Julia was born in Christian Coun ty in the same state. MINETREE II Rinaldo Powell Minetree was born on June 4, 1844 in Nashville, Tennessee. His wife, Rebecca Eubanks, was born in Union County, Kentucky in 1845. In 1880 the family was living next to Napoleon Minetree (see MINETREE I) in the Hickman District of Fulto n County, Kentucky. Their children at this time were: Eudora, born on Sept. 25, 1867; John W., 1871; Fanny, 1872; and Napoleon, 1875. Eudora Minetree married John D. Mayes and the couple remained in Fulton County, Kentucky. Eudora died in 1954. Rinaldo and Rebecca Minetree moved to Paragould in 1891. John W. Minetree married Eliza Highfill in Greene County, Arkansas. Eliza was born in Greene County in 1880. She was the daughter of John and Sarah Highfill (see HIGHFILL, Volume I). Ernest Minetree, son of Rinaldo, was born in Kentucky in 1885. He was a teacher byoccupation and died by drowning near Manila, Arkansas while still unmarried. Napoleon (James N.) Minetree a physician, graduated from the Louisville, Kentucky Medical College in 1903. He married Mary Cline who was a step- daughter of Dr. Cline of Greene County. Viola Elizabeth Minetree, daughter of Rinaldo, was born on Oct. 2 0, 1889 in Fulton County, Kentucky. She later married cgbert O. Oliver of Paragould. In 1939 Egbert and Viola were living at 113 North Seventh in the City. Egbert was a bookkeeper for the Bertig Company at this time. In 1916 Rinaldoand Rebecca Minetreewere living at720 South Seventh in Paragould. Rinaldoand Rebecca are buried at the Linwood Cemetery. Rinaldo's marker shows dates of 1844 and 1925. The marker for Rebecca bears dates of 1845 and 1937. Adrian Mi netree is buried nearby and his marker shows dates of 1880 and 1941. John W. Minetree is buried on the extreme south side of Linwood Cemetery. H is marker indicates that he was born in 1871and died in 1947. The stone for his wife, Eliza L., bears dates of 1880 and 1925. Fanny (Frances) Minetree, daughter of Rinaldo, married Robert J. Peterson. Robert J. was the son of George L. and Julia Ann Peterson who were born in North Carolina and Tennessee in 1852 and 1854 respectively. Frances and Robert are buried at the L inwood Cemetery. Robert's markershows dates of 1874 and 1935. The stone for Frances indicates that she was born in 1873 and died in 1949. (Much of the information for the MINETREE I and MINETREE II sketches was provided by Richard H. Minetree of Poplar Bluff, Missouri. Richard H. now has possession of the Minetree family Bible records.) MOBLEY I Jonathan Mobley was born in North Carolina in 1815. His wife, Mary, was born in the same state in 1819. In 1850 the family was living in Gibson County, Tennessee and their children at this time werr Allen, 1848; and Elizabeth, 1849. Allen Mobley married a woman named Martha, born in Tennessee in 1851. In about 1879 Allen and Martha moved to Greene County and settled in Hurricane Township. In 1880 their children were: Robert, 1868; Mary, 1 870; Laura A., 1872; William A., 187 5; and James A., 1878. Allen and Martha H. Mobley are buried at the Providence Cemetery in northern Greene County. The marker for Allen shows dates of 1848 and 1 901. The marker for Martha H. bears dates of 1850 and 1909. MOBLEY 11 P. Mobley was born in North Carolina in 1802. The name of his wife is not known. In 1850 P. Mobley was living in Weakley County, Tennessee and his children at home were: John, 1828; William, 1830; Cullen, 1833; Albert, 1836; James, 1840; and Bento n, 1842. Cullen Mobley married a woman named Martha A. while still in Tennessee. The family came to Greene County during the 1860's and settled in Union Township. In 1870 the children of Cullen and Martha Mobley were: Martha V.R., 1863; and Florence, 1879. Tw o black children, Bet Knight and George Mobley, were living with the family at the time. Cullen and Martha Mobley are buried at the Mobley Cemetery in Clay County, Arkansas. Cullen's marker shows dates of 1832 and 1883. The marker for Martha shows a birthdate of 1843 but no date of death. Albert Mobley is also buried at this cemetery and his marker shows dates of 1835 and 1892. MORROW Eliza Ann Morrow was born in Tennessee in 1815. The name of her husband is not known. Ir2 1850 Eliza Ann was living in Giles County, Tennessee and the other members of her household were: Narcissa Jane, 1829; William F., 1831; John D., 1832; Maner va, 1834; Thomas J., 1837; Martha E., 1840; and Masry M., 1843. William F. Morrow married a woman named Mary, born in 1837. In 1860 the family was living in Cache Township of Greene County and their children were: Isaac, 1852; and John L., 1859. Isaac was born in Tennessee and John, in Arkansas. By 1870, five more children had been added to the household of William and Mary A. Morrow: William Jr., 1861; Phillip, 1863; James, 1865; Nelson J., 1867; and Eliza Jane, 1870. Apparently Mary Morrow died during the 1870's and William F. married Hannah Taylor in Greene County on August 31, 1878. In 1880 Frank and Hannah were living in Cache Township. The 1880 census shows Franklin Morrow, born in 1872, as a member of the family. Three stepchildren were also members of the household. Thesewere: George Taylor(1865), JamesTaylor(1867), and William Taylor (1869). Hannah Greer (a grandaughter of Hannah Morrow) was also present. John L. Morrow, son of William F., married Adeline Taylor in Greene County on Nov. 18, 1879. Adeline was nineteen years old at the time. In 1850 two other Morrow families were living very near Eliza Ann Morrow in Giles County Tennessee. One of these families was that of Asbury and Usley Morrow born in Tennessee in 1827 and 1831respectively. Their children at this time were: Malissa P., 1848; and Isaac D., 1850. The other family was that of Daniel and Ellender D. Morrow, born in South Carolina in 1800 and 1804 respectively. Their children still at home were: Mary Jane, 1830; Elizabeth, 1832; Ruth Ann, 1834; William A., 1 83 7; Nancy D., 1841; Samuel L.D., 1843; John T., 1845; and Martha E., 1848. NEWSOM Sterling Newsom was born in North Carolina in about 1805. His wife, Nancy H., was born in Tennessee in 1815. In 1850 this familywas living in Tippah County, Mississippi and theirchildren were: Obediah, 1836; Theophilus, 1838; MaryJ., 1838; John, 18 40; Hester L., 1843; and NancyA., 1845. The census record indicates that John was born in Arkansas,but all the other children were born in Mississippi. Thomas M. Barr, Frances E. Holliday, and Richard Jana were also members of the household. They w ere born in Tennessee in 1831, 1832, and 1843 respectively. During the 1850's the Newsom family moved to Greene County and settled in St. Francis Township. Obediah S. (O.S.) Newsom married a woman named Margaret G., born in Tennessee in 18~12. In 1870 theywerelivinginSt. FrancisTownshipandtheirchildrenwere : NancyJ., 1860;JohnS.P., 1862;James E., 1866; Mary E., 1867; Sarah, 1868; and O. A., 1870. William B. Cone and C. E. Hyde. born in Tennessee and Arkansas in 1855 and 1852 respectively were also in the household. By 1880 the O. S. Newson family wa s in Poland Township and several more children had been added to the household: Martha, 1871; Pernicy, 1872; Arrora E., (a daughter), 1873; Ezra W., 1875; Frances. 1877: and Willie. 1879. In 1870 Rhoda E. (R.E.) Newsom was living in the household of Sterling Newsom. She was born in about 1842. William B. Cone married Rhoda E. News om in Greene County on May 5, 1880. When the 1880 census wastaken William and Rhodawere living in Polan dTownship andfive stepchi,dren were in the household. These were: M.D.L. Tatum (a son), 1859; George Tatum, 1865; Woodsy Newsom (a daughter), 1868; Willie Newsom (a daughter), 1872; and Restus Newsom (a son), 1876. The Tatum children were born in Ten nessee and the Newsom children, in Arkansas. T.H. (Theophilus H.) Newsom, son of Sterling, married a woman named Sarah A., born in 1836. In 1870 the family was living in St. Francis Township and their children were: John H., 1860; MaryJ., 1862; Tillman A.J., 1865; Simeon J., 1867. By 1880 the family was living in Poland Township and three more children had been added to the household: Nancy A., 1871; Tennessee, 1875; and P. Washington. 1876. Sterling Newsom died in 1877 and was buried at the Finch Cemetery. H is marker indicates that he was the father of O.S. Newsom and was the second person to be buried at this cemetery. Margaret G. Newsom, wife of O.S., died in 1893. The second wife of O.S. Newsom was named Julia A. A number of other persons bearing the Newsom name are also buried at Finch. Many Newsom people still live in Greene County today. NOEL The history of the Noel family in Greene County begins with Liberty Noel and his wife, Elizabeth, born in Tennessee in 1815 and 1819 respectively. In 1850 this family was living in Gibson County. Tennessee and their children at this time were: Nancy, 1834; Sarah, 1836; Thomas, 1838; John W., 1840; Robert, 1841; David Henry, 1842; Mary, 1845; Parthenia, 1846; Frances, 1847; and Liberty, 1850. There is no evidence that Liberty and Elizabeth Noel ever came to Greene County; however, it is known that their sons, David Henry and John W., moved to this area. John W. Noel came to Greene County during the 1860's and settled in Friendship Township. He married Martha J. Mealer, daughter of Norborn and Henrietta Mealer. Norborn and Henrietta were born in Virginia in 1804 and 1808 respectively. In 1850 the Mea ler family was living in Giles County, Tennessee. As of 1870 the children of John W. and Martha J. Noel were: Liberty A. (a son), 1863; Robert F., 1865; Stephen, 1866; Alice, 1869; and Granville, 1870. Manda Mealer, sister of Martha J., born in Tennessee in 1832, was living with the family at this time. David Henry Noel married a woman named Almeda, born in Tennessee in 1849. They moved to Greene County in about 1873 and settled in Friendship Township. As of 1880 their children at home were: Alwilda, 1867; Arminta B., 1872; Granville, 1874; James , 1876; and Stephen, 1879. Some persons bearing the name of Noel are buried at the New Friendship and New Liberty Cemeteries in northern Greene County. At various times this name has also been been spelled "Nowel." In 1850 another Noel family lived next to Liberty and Elizabe th Noel in Gibson County, Tennessee. This was the family of Thomas and Nancy Ann Noel, born in Kentucky and North Carolina in 1796 and 1798 respectively. They had no children living at home at this time. NUTT The earliest record of the Nutt family in Greene County appears in the 1850 census. This census shows Granville, Sarah, Robert, and John Nutt living together in the same household in St. Francis Township. Their years of birth are given as 1828, 1827 1830, and 1832 respectivley. The 1860 census for Greene County lists a William G. (Granville?) and Sarah Nutt. The children listed for this family were: Rutha J., 1853; Sheba, 1854; William, 1856; Nancy C., 1858; and Ibba (a daughter), 1860. In 1880 John Nutt and his wife, Nancy, were living in Salem Township and their children at home were: William, 1857; George, 1859; Sampson, 1861; Elizabeth, 1864; Nancy, 1866; and John, 1868. In 1880 Robert Nutt(born 1830) was living next toJohn Nutt(born in 1832). Apparently Robert Nutt was a widower at this time. The children in his household were: Caroline, 1865; Thomas, 1867; Sarah, 1870; Dovey, 1873; and Robert 1874. Agrand-daught er, Emily Freeman, born in in 1879, wasalso in the household. John Nutt and his wife, Nancy, are buried at the Mt. Zion Cemetery. John's marker shows dates of Aug. 8, 1832 and April 5, 1890. Nancy's marker shows dates of Oct. 5, 1827 and ~Sept. 15, 1912. At least eighteen persons bearing the name of Nutt, either by birth or by marriage, are buried at the Mt. Zion Cemetery. It is said that a Baptist preacher named William Nutt was in Greene County during the early 1840's. This William Nutt died before 1850 and no records exist to show how, or if, he was related to the other Nutt people who lived in the County.
