Oteywas born in Virginia in 1803. Hiswife, Susan, was born in Kentucky in 1813. In 1850 the Otey family was living in McCracken County, Kentucky. At this time their children were: Frances, 1836; Elizabeth, 1838; Warren, 1842; Burnetty (a da ughter), 1844; and Bedford, 1847. Thomas and Martha Ross, born in 1828 and 1834 respectively, were living with the family. It is believed that the Otey family came to Greene County in about 1875. Warren Otey married a woman named Mary E. and in 1880 they were living in Friendship Township. Their children at this time were: Robert Lee, 1875; Hattie M., 1877; and Warren V. , 1879. All the children were born in Arkansas. William H. Otey, son of Thomas C., was born in 1851. By 1880 he had married a woman named Elizabeth A. and they lived in Hurricane Township. They had one child atthis time, Alva, born in Arkansas in 1876. William's mother, Susan, was I iving in the s ame household. Thomas C. Otey died in 1879. Elizabeth Otey, wife of William H., died in 1882 and was buried at the Cudd Cemetery. William married Nancy Caroline Freeman in Greene County on Nov. 14, 1883. Nancy was born in Arkansas in 1865. She was the daughter of Filmore and Mary Freeman, born in North Carolina and Tennessee in 1832 and 1838 respectively. In 1880 Filmore Freeman was a dry goods merchant in Hurricane Township. Nancy C. Otey died in 1914 and was buried at the Cudd Cemetery. Some persons bearing the name of Otey are also buried at the New Friendship Cemetery. This cemtery is located a few miles north of Paragould. OWENS David Owens was born in South Carolina in 1810. His wife, Irena, was born in the same state in 1816. In 1850 the familywas living in Fayette County, Tennessee and theirchildren were: Harrington, 1833; Tennessee, 1836; Louisiana, 1838; Benjamin F., 18 42; and James W., 1850. The Owens family moved to Greene County d~. ing the 1870's and settled in St. Francis Township. Harrington, James, and William W. Owens were close neighbors in the Township. Harrington Owens married a woman named Virginia A., born in Mississippi in 1853. In 1880 their children were: Oscar, 1863; Agnes, 1872; William, 1874; Alonzo, 1878; and Almarine, 1880. Harrington's father, David P. Owens, was living with the family a t this time. Virginia Owens later married W.M. Wadley in Greene County. James Owens married a woman named Sity, born in Mississippi in 1852. In 1880 they were living in St. Francis Township and their children were: Charles H., 1877; and Viola, 1879. Elizabeth Black (James' mother-in-law), born in South Carolina in 1815, was living with the family at this time. Elizabeth Black (James' sister-in-law), born in Mississippi in 1852, was also a member of the household. William W. Owens married a woman named Nancy, born in Tennessee in 1859. In 1880 they were living in St. Francis Township next to Harrington Owens and his family. William and Nancy had only one child at this time, William Jr. born in 1879. In 1930, at the age 76, Mrs.'Virginia A. Wadley attended a banquet in Paragould which was later referred to as "Bud Ryan's Party for the Old Folk." The guest roster indicated that Virginia was born in Fayette County, Mississippi. OXLEY James Oxley was born in Norh Carolina in 1799. Hiswife, Ann, was born in the same state in 1812. In 1850 the family was living in Haywood County, Tennessee and their children were: William, 1838; John, 1840; Clay (Henry Clay), 1842; Cintha, 1844; Har vey, 1845; Aquilla, 1847; and Milton, 1849. Henry Clay Oxley moved to Greene County sometime during the 1870's and settled in Friendship Township. In 1880 his children were: Aquilla E., 1870; William H.C., 1872; Needham, 1874; David C., 1877; and Edward D., 1879. William Oxley, borther of Clay, settled in Dunklin County, Missouri. Information about William and his family may be found in Goodspeed's History of Southeast Mlssouri. PAC K Isaac Pack was born in Tennessee in about 1822. His wife, Adaline, was born in South Carolina in about 1826. In 1850 thisfamilywas living in WestArmuchee in WaIkerCounty, Georgia. Theirchildren at this time were: John H., 1847; and Jessie J. (a son), 1849. John H. was born in South Carolina and Jessie J. was born in Georgia. A Madaline Eslinger, born in South Carolina in 1785, was living with the family at this time. It is suspected that Madaline may have been the mother of Adaline, but there is no positive evidence on this. By 1860 Isaac Pack and his family had moved to Greene County, Arkansas and taken up residence in Cache Township. By this time two more children had been added to the household: MaryJ., 1852; and Isaac N., 1855. It appears, therefore, that the family arrived in Greene County sometime between 1855 and 1860. PARSONS Pleasant R. Parsons was born in South Carolinna in 1826. His wife Elizabeth J., was born in Virginia in 1824. In 1850 the familywas living in Carroll County, Tennessee and theirchildren were: Mary, 1844; and Frances, 1848. At some time before 1880 Pleasant and Elizabeth Parsons moved to Greene County and settled in Union Township. As of 1880 there were no children living in their household. Pleasant's occupation is listed, in the census record, as "physician." In 1850 two other Parsons families were living in the same neighborhood with Pleasant and Elizabeth Parsons in Carroll County, Tennessee. One of these was the family of Royman and Allay A. Parsons, born in South Carolina in 1822 and 1824 respectively . The otherfamily was that of Vincen and Ritta Parsons, born in 1817 in North Carolina and South Carolina respectively. PETERSON Peyton R. Peterson was born in North Carolina in abut 1824. His wife, Mary Ann, was born in the same state in 1830. In 1850 the family was living in Sampson County, North Carolina and at this time they had only one child, Laura, born in 1850. The Peterson family apparently arrived in Greene County during the late 1860's or early 1870's. In 1880 the family was living in St. Fancis Township. At this time Peyton's daughter, Laura Peterson Heral (Herald) was living with the family. Three gran dchildren were also members of the household: Lula F., 1872; Mary E., 1875; and Asa F., 1878. All these children were born in Arkansas. PULLEY Daniel R. Pulley was born in Virginia in 1819. His wife, Sarah, was born in Tennessee in 1828. In 1850 the family was living in Williamson County, Illinois and at this time they had only one child, Mary Elizabeth, born in Illinois in 1845. In 1850 another Pulley family lived in the same neighborhood with Daniel and Sarah Pulley in Williamson County, Illinois. This was the family of George and Rebecca Pulley. George and Rebecca were born in Illinois in 1826 and 1830 respectively. In 1870 Daniel R. Pulley was living in Grand Tower Precinct of Jackson County, Illinois. The other members of his household at this time were: Susan, 1843; Julia, 1856; and Ella, 1859. Daniel's occupation is listed, in the census record, as "Justice of the Peace." In 1880 Daniel R. Pulleywas living in St. FrancisTownship of Greene County, Arkansas. Susan and Julia Pulley were members of the same household. Mary E. Pulley, daughter of Daniel, married Christopher F. Edrington in Williamson County Illinois. At some time after 1880 they moved to Greene County, Arkansas. Christopher and Mary E. had at least fivechildrenwhosurvivedtoadulthood: Edward, 1868; Paulina, 1873; Lueella, 1875; Minnie, 1879; and John, 1883. John was born in Arkansas, but all ~the older children were born in Illinois. Edward Edrington, son of Christopher, first married Mary Ann Hampton, daughter of Nimrod and Angeline Bowlin Hampton (see Volume I). They had th ree children: Clarence, 1890~ Annie Mae, 1892; and Leona, 1894. Mary Ann died and Edward later married El iza C. Cravens (see Cravens, Volume II). They had three children: Edward, 1897; Louis, 1900; and Callie, 1906. Daniel R. Pulley is buried at the Linwood Cemetery in Paragould. His marker shows dates of 1819 and 1896. PYLAND Stephen Pyland (Pylant) was born in Tennessee in1814. His wife, Martha, was born in the same state in 1825. In 1850 the family was living in Franklin County, Tennessee. Their children at this time were: Frances, 1840; John, 1842; and Abner, 1850. There is no evidence that Stephen and Martha Pyalnd ever came to Greene County, but it is known that Abner Pyland came to the County in about 1870. Abner married a woman named Mary A., born in Arkansas in 1852. In 1880 the family was living in Poland Township and their children were: Mary E., 1872; George, 1873; Stephen, 1876; Mary, 1878; and Nancy, 1880. RAGSDALE James Ragsdale was born in Virginia in 1795. The name of his wife is not known with certainty. In 1850 the family was living in Giles County, Tennessee and the other members of the household were: Lucinda, 1819; Volentine, 1832; and Giles, 1835. It i s not known whether Lucinda was the wife or the daughter of James Ragsdale. Giles Ragsdale came to greene County and settled in Union Township during the late 1850's. He married a woman named Sarah while still in Tennessee. Sarah was born in Tennessee in 1831. As of 1860 the children of Giles and Sarah were: James M., 1856; and William, 1857. Both children were born in Missouri. In 1870 Giles and Sarah Ragsdale were living in St. Francis Township and by this time four more children had been added to the family: Jeremiah, 1861; Lucinda A., 1863; Stephen V., 1866; and Louisa C., 1879. All these children were born in Arkansas. Sarah Ragsdale apparently died sometime during the 1870's and Giles married a woman named Nancy C., born in Mississippi in 1850. In 1880 they were living in Union Township and three of Giles' step- children were living in the household: John H. Hinsle y, 1873; Charity Hinsley, 1876; and Margaret E. Hinsley, 1879. James. M. Ragsdale, son of Giles, married Mary J. Nixon (Nickson) in Greene County on July 6, 1877. Mary J. was twenty years old at the time. Mary Jane was the daughter of Joseph Nixon, born in Georgia in 1824. In 1870 Joseph was a resident of St. Fr ancis Township. REDDICK Willis Reddickwas born in North Carolina in 1820. In 1850 hewas living in DyerCounty, Tennessee. The full name of his wife is not known since she is listed simply as"L" in the 1850 census. The Reddick children at this time were: Arsina, 1842; E. D., 1845; and Humphrey, 1848. According to tradition, Humphrey Reddick and his wife, Emaline F., came to Greene County during the 1870's; however their names do not appear in the 1880 census for the County. The Reddick family settled in the St. Francis River bottomland in the eas tern part of Greene County. Humphrey and Emaline F. Reddick are buried at the Reddick Cemetery very near the point where they originally settled. Humphrey's marker shows dates of 1840 and 1908. The marker for Emaline bears dates of 1848 and 1891. REEVES Michael Reeves(Reaves) was born in Virginia in 1796. The name of his wife is not known. In 18`~0 Michael Reeves was living in Gibson County, Tennessee and the other members of his household were: William, 1818; Elizabeth, 1823; Anna, 1825; Peter, 182 7; Sarah, 1829; and John, 1831. Peter M. Reeves married a woman named Julia, born in Tennessee in 1842. In 1880 Peterand Julia were living in Friendship Township in Greene County and their children at home were: E.M.. 1864: George M., 1868; Frank, 1873; Annie R., 1876; and Rural R. , 1879. Some of t he members of the Reeves families are buried at the New Friendship Cemetery. Julia A. Reeves is buried there and her marker shows dates of 1842 and 1896. Her marker also indicates that she was the wife of P.M. Reeves. RIDDLE Jospeh Riddle was born in North Carolina in 1822. His wife, Eliza, was born in the same state in 1821. In 1850 the familywas living in Chatham County, North Carolina and theirchildren were Thomas, 1842; Calvin, 1844; Elizabeth, 1846; Alvis, 1847; and Simeon, 1849. Joseph Riddle and his family moved to Greene County during the late 1850's and settled in Union Township. By 1860 three more children had been added to the household: Mary F., 1852; M.B. (a son), 1856; and Nancy A., 1859. Nancy A. was born in Arkansa s but all the older children were born in North Carolian. In 1870 Joseph and Eliza Riddle were living in Hurricane Township and by this time two more children had been born: Prity Annar, 1861; and Virginia, 1863. Alvis Riddle, son of Jospeh, married a woman named Margaret E., born in Tennessee n 1851. In 1870 they were living in Union Township. They had no children at this time. M.B. (Marion B.) Riddle, son of Joseph, married Mary E. Welch in Greene County on May 10, 1880. Mary was twenty years of age at the time. In 1880 Jospeh and Eliza Riddlewere still living in Union Township. Theirdaughter, Mary, was living with them at this time. A grand-daughter, Malinda Banks born in 1875, was also a member of the household. Alvis L.Riddle is buried at the Hartsoe Cemetery west of Marmaduke. His marker shows dates of 1847 and 1922. In 1850 another Riddle family was living next to the Joseph and Eliza Riddle family in Chatham County, North Carolina. This was the family of Thomas and Priscilla Riddle, born in 1798 and 1801respectively. A child, Elizabeth, born in 1843, was a memb er of their household at the time. RILEY Washington Riley was born in North Carolina in 1819. In 1850 he was living in Gibson County, Tennessee and wasthe only memberof his household atthattime. Whilestill in Tennessee, Washington married a woman named Mary A., born in that state in 1829. During the late 1850's Washington and Mary A. moved to Greene County and settled in Union Township. As of 1860 they had only one child, Wiliam T., born in Tennessee in 1858. In 1870 the Riley family was living in Friendship Township and by this time three more children had been added to the household: Mary J., 1862; Robert F., and Millie A., 1870. George Whitlock, born in Tennessee in 1848, was also a member of the house hold. Apparently George was a native of Gibson County, Tennessee, but his relationship to Washington Riley is not known. In1880 Washington and Mary Rileywere again living in Union Township. Theirchildren, Robert and Millie, were still living with their parents at this time. William T. Riley married NancyA. Patton in Greene Countyon Jan. 9, 1877. Nancywas the daughter of James A. and D.E. Patton, born in Kentucky and Tennessee in 1838 and 1840 respectively. In 1880 William T. and Nancy were living in Friendship Township and at this time they had no children. Robert Riley married Ella Shearer in Greene County on July 18, 1885. Ella was sixteen years of age at the time. Ella was the daughter of Austin M. and Elanor Shearer, born in Tennessee in 1842 and 1848 respectively. (See Shearer, Volume I) Washington and Mary A. Riley are buried at the New Friendship Cemetery. Washington's marker shows dates of 1818 and 1899. The marker for Mary A. bears 1829 and 1914. ROBERTS John Roberts was born in Tennessee in 1820. H is wife, Mary A., was born in the same state in 1821. In 1850 the tamily was living in Henderson County, Tennessee. At this time they had only one child, William Louisdale Roberts, born in 1849. In about 1865 the Roberts family moved to Greene County and settled in St. Francis Township. By 1870 several more children had been added to the household: David L.S., 1854; Mary A., 1856; Dock, 1859; Sarah J., 1862; Emily L., 1864; and Eldridge. Eld ridge was born in Arkansas but all the older children were born in Tennessee. By 1880 John Roberts had died. His wife, Mary, was living in Poland Township at the time and her children, Emily and Eldridge, were living with her. Dock Roberts married a woman named Martha, born in Alabama in 1859, and in 1880 they were living in St. Francis Township. SCOTT William H. Scott was born in North Carolina in 1827. His wife, Emma W., was born in the same state in 1835. William Scott and Emma W. Steadman were married in Wake County, North Carolina on May 28, 1855. Emma W. was the sister of Lon Steadman (1838-1 922). The William Scott family came to Greene County in about 1865 and settled in St. Francis Township. In 1870 their children at home were: William H. Jr., 1856; Thomas G., 1858; Frank S., 1860; Everett, 1862; Leonidas, 1864; Charles V., 1867; and Edwin W ., 1870. By 1880 two more children had been added to the household: Robert, 1873; and James, 1876. The four younger children were born in Arkansas but all the older ones were born in North Carolina. Emma W. Scott died in 1887 and was buried at t he Gainesville Cemetery. William H. died in 1911and was buried at the same place. Their sons, Thomas G., William H. Jr., and Leonidas, died in 1870, 1877, and 1909 respectively. All are buried at Gainesv ille. Frank S. Scott died in Little Rock, Arkansas in 1921. His obituary appeared in the Nov. 11, 1921issue of the Paragould Soliphone. His birthplace is given as Wake County, North Carolina. He had married Ann Looney of Gainesville. His surviving children were: Lola, Clifton, Kate, Ray, Fred, Ruth, William and Frank Jr. At the time of his death, Frank Scott had three brothers living in Little Rock, Arkansas: Dr. Charles V. Scott, Edwin Scott, and Robert Scott. His brother, James Scott, was living in Dallas, Texas at the time. Frank S. Scott was buried at Little Rock. SEGROVES Albert Segroves was born in North Carolina in 1814. His wife, Rebecca, was born in the same state in 1812. In 1840 Albert was living in Chatham County, North Carolina. By 1860 Albert and Rebecca had moved to Greene County and settled in Union Townshi p. Their children at home at this time were: Spenser H., 1840; A. M., 1842; Mary A. F., 1844; W. M., 1846; Martha C., 1849; and James T., 1854. James T. was born in Arkansas, but all the other children were born in North Carolina. In 1870 the Albert Segroves family was living in Hurricane Township. Mary Segroves Wilkerson, now a widow, was living with the family. Her daughter, Dicy Ann, was also present. Albert's occupation was listed, in the census record,as "County and Proba te Judge." James T. Segroves, son of Albert, married Caledonia Trantham in Greene County on March 22, 1877. Caledonia was the daughter of John and Mary Trantham, born in Tennessee and North Carolina in 1833 and 1830 respectively. In 1860 and 1880 a John T. Segroves was living next to Albert and Rebecca in Union and Hurricane Townships respectively. It is suspected that he was the oldest son of Albert and Rebecca. John's wife was named Emily, born in Alabama in 1844. Their chi ldren in 1880 were: Martha, 1865; Sarah, 1867; Elvira C., (a daughter), 1870; Eva, 1872; and Lilly, 1880. Spencer H. Segroves married a woman named Margaret A., born in Virginia in 1842. In 1870 they were living in Hurricane Township and their children were: Mary, 1866; Clarence, 1867; and Thomas Jesse, 1868. Mary was born in Kentucky, but the two younge r children were born in Arkansas. In 1880 Albert and Rebecca Segroves were living in Hurricane Township. Their son, James, and daughter-in-law, Caledonia, were living in the same household at this time. The children of James and Caledonia in 1880 were: Annie, 1878; and Thomas, 1879. James and Caledonia Segroves are buried at the Hartsoe Cemetery west of Marmaduke. The marker for James shows dates of 1854 and 1895. The marker for Caledonia bears dates of 1858 and 1943. SHEARER The reader is referred to the Shearersketch in Volume I of this book. Since the writing of that sketch, one new piece of information concerning this family has been discovered: Henry Shearer married Penelope June Berry in Gibson County, Tennessee on Jan. 16, 1837. Apparently this was the second marriage for Henry Shearer. As indicated in the original sketch, the Shearer family was living in Lauderdale County, Tennessee in 1850. SLATTON Aaron Slatton was born in South Carolina in 1803. His wife, Adaline, was born in the same state in 1811. In 1850 the family was living in Benton County,Alabama and their children were: John, 1830; Jackson A., 1832;5arah A, 1835; James M., 1836; Charl es A., 1838; Jospeh, 1840; Mary C., 1844; Elizabeth J. 1846; and Nancy A., 1848. Parlina and Angeline Slatton, born in Georgia in 1832 and 1834 respectively, were also present; their relationship to Aaron Slatton is not known. Aaron's three older chi ldren were born in Tennessee, but all the others were born in Alabama. Charles A. Slatton married awoman named Rebeccawhile still living in Alabama. During the 1860's Charles and Rebecca moved to Greene County and settled in St. Francis Township. Their children in 1870 were: Greene, 1860; Samuel, 1865; Warren, 1867; and R. E. Lee, 1870. The two older children were born in Alabama, but the younger two were born in Arkansas. By 1880 Charles and Rebecca were living in Poland Township and three more children had been added to the family: George, 1873; Harve, 1876; and Alice, 1879. John Slatton, son of Aaron, was living with his wife, Barshaba, in Poland Township in 1880. Their children at this time were: Nancy, 1866; Martha, 1869; Savana, 1872; Tildon, 1877; and Benjamin C., 1880. Frances Burks (apparently a step-daughter of J ohn), born in Alabama in 1862, was also present. Greene W. Slatton, son of Charles A., married Mary E. Hudgens in Greene County on Jan. 24, 1879. Mary was sixteen years of age at the time. Aparently Mary died within the next few years. Greene Slatton married Carli C. Nettleson March 10, 1885. Carli wasthedaughterofThomasJ. and Martha Nettleswho were residents ot Union Township in 1880. Many persons bearing the name of Slatton, eigher by birth or by marriage, are buried at the Finch Cemetery. This cemetery is located in southwestern Greene County. SMITH I Stanford Smith was born in North Carolina in 1812. His wife, Margaret, was born in Tennessee in 1819. In 1850 his family was living in Cannon County, Tennessee and theirchildren were: David, 1834; Thomas L., 1836; Elizabeth, 1839; Saffiah, 1841; Will iam, 1843; Jospeh, 1845; Hannah L., 1846; Rachel A., 1847; Alfred, 1848; and Jane, 1847. Stanford's occupation is listed in the 1850 census as "house carpenter." In 1860 the Stanford Smith family had moved to Greene County and settled in Cache Township. By this time another child had been added to the household: Stanford Jr., born in 1851. 1870 Stanford Smith was still living in Cache Township and two of his unmarried children, Alfred and Rebecca, were living with him. His ma~ried daughter, Hannah Moore, and her three children (Joanah, Elizabeth, and Rebecca) were also members of the h ousehold. David A. Smith, eldest son of Stanford, was married in aboutl 856 aftercoming toArkansas. In 1870 he and his wife, Margaret, lived in Cache Township. At this time their children were: William W.C., 1858; Sarah A., 1861; and Susan C., 1868. Margaret Smith, wife of David, died during the late 1870's and on August 13, 1879 David married Frances L. Fletcher. By 1880 two more children had been added to the David Smith family: Logan. 1870; and James, 1875. These were the children of David by his first wife. SMITH II John S. Smith was born in Tennessee in 1820. His wife, Frances, was born in North Carolina in the same year. In 1850 the family was living in Benton County, Tennessee. Theirchildren at that time were: Irvin, 1845; Dicy, 1847; and an unnamed child bor n in 1850. Irvin Smith married a woman named Louisa wliile still in Tennessee. Louisa was born in that state in 1847. In about 1870 the family came to Greene County and settled in Union Township. Theirchildren as of 1880 were: Alice, 1869; Walter, 1873; and Lau ra, 1880. Irvin's brother, born in Tennessee in 1861, was living with the family at the time. The name of this brother is not clear in the 1880 census record. SPARKS Edmund Sparks was born in Virginia in 1820. His wife, Elizabeth, was born in Tennessee in 1827. In 1850 the family was living in Cannon County, Tennessee and their children were: Thomas A., 1847~ , William A., 1848; and James A., 1850. Thomas A. Sparks married a woman named Helen, born in North Carolina in 1856. in 1880 they were living in Union Township of Greene County and they had one daughter, Martha E., born in 1876. James A. Sparks married Edney S. Cole in Greene County on No v. 14, 1877. Edney S. was twenty- three years of age at the time. Edney was the daugher of Dennis Cole, born in North Carolina in about 1800. James A. and Edney Sparks are buried at the Epsaba Cemetery north of Paragould. James' marker shows daes of 1851and 1928. The marker for Edney shows dates of 1854 and 1916. Dennis Cole is also buried at this cemetery. His marker bears the inscription "father of twenty-five children." STAIRES William R. Staires (Stars) was born in Tennessee in 1820. His wife, Kesiah, was born in the same state in 1821. In 1850 this family was already living in St. Francis Township of Greene County. Their children at this time were: Elizabeth, 1843; Elias, 1844; John, 1846; William T., 1848; and Elizabeth (two), 1850. In 1860 the Staires family was living in UnionTownship and by this time several more children had been added to the household: Eliza J., 1851; Andrew J., 1853; Matthew B., 1855; Delana, 1857; and Hezekiah, 1859. All these children were born in Arkans as. Mary and James Forester, born in Tennessee and Arkansas in 1848 and 1850 respectively, were also members of the household at this time. In 1870 William R. and Kesiah Staires were living in Hurricane Township and by this time one more child had been added to the family: Abagail, born in 1864. William T. Staires married a woman named Martha J., born in 1846. Both are buried at the Starnes Cemetery in northern Greene County. William's marker shows dates of 1847 and 1907. Martha's marker indicates that she died in 1916. Some persons bearing the name of Staires still live in the Marmaduke and Rector areas today. STAM PS William Stamps was born in Tennessee in 1838. Hiswife, Delila, was born in the same state in 1837. In 1880 this family was living in Crockett County, Tennessee and their children were: J.A. (Joseph Alexander), 1863; Nancy E., 1866; Rachel C., 1869; W illiam N., 1877; and Amanda, 1879. J.A. Stamps came to Greene County sometime after 1880. As of 1916 he was living at 314 West Hunt in Paragould. Linnie E. Stamps and his wife, Maud, were living at the same address at this time. Linnie was a mail carrier on rural route three. In 1939 J.A. Stamps was still living at314 West Hunt in Paragould. Linnie and his wife, Maud, lived at 521North Third at this time. Linnie continued his work as mail carrier until his retirement. Judy T. Stamps, wife of J.A., died in 1915 and was buried at the Linwood Cemetery; her year of birth is indicated as 1864. J.A. died in 1951and was buried at the same place. Wiliam N. (Willie) Stamps, brother of J.A., died in 1896 at the age of ninet een and is also buried at Linwood. Linnie and Maud Stamps are buried at Linwood near the main gate on the north side. Maud died in 1971and Linnie, in 1972. Alvin G. Stamps (1888-1968), son of J.A. Stamps, is buried near Linnie and Maud. STARNES Moses Starnes was born in South Carolina in 1800. The name of is wife is not known. In 1850 the family was living in Tipton County, Tennessee and the children were: Marshall, 1822; Rebecca A., 1824; Eliza, 1826; Pinkney, 1828; Mary, 1830; John, 1832; and Sarah, 1839. All these children were born in Tennessee. Marshall Starnes came to Greene County in about 1870 and settled in H urricane Township. H is wife is listed in the 1880 census as "Paralee" and it is believed that she was Marshall's second wife. Their children in 1880 were: Jureta E., 1859; Martha F., 1861; Moses D., 1866; Nancy P., 1869; and James W., 1871. John R. Starnes, an olderson of Marshall Starnes, also moved to Greene County during the 1870's and settled in Hurricane Township. John R. had married a woman named Elizabeth, born in Tennessee in 1830. In 1880 their children were: Sarah J., 1865; Ma rshall D., 1868; and Paralee, 1870. Mary Johnson (John s mother-in-law) was also a member of the household. Mary Johnson was born in North Carolina in 1802. Many of the membrs of the Starnes families are buried at the Starnes Cemetery northwest of Marmaduke. Others are buried at the Hartsoe Cemetery. STEVENSON I Elaam (Elem) Stevenson (Stephenson) was born in North Carolina in 1787. H is wife, Lydia, was born in the same state in the same year. In 1850 the family was living in Giles County, Tennessee and their only child remaining at home at this time was Gi lbert W., born in Tennessee in 1830. Gilbert W. Stevenson was apparently married three times. His first marriage took place in Tennessee. In about 1875 the family moved to Greene County and settled in Union Township. The children at this time were: Margaret, 1863; Louiza, 1869, William E., 1870; iUlpian B., 1876; and Mollie A.B., 1879. The older three children were born in Tennessee and the two younger ones, in Arkansas. Gilbert's occupation is listed, in the census, as "teacher." Gilbert W. Stevenson was married to Susan F. Witt in Greene County on April 1, 1880. Susan was45 years of age at the time. She was apparently a widow. Gilbert next married Ellen Shaw on Dec. 23, 1881. Ellen was 40 years old at the time. STEVENSON II AbnerA. Stevenson was born in Tennessee in 1819. His wife, Martha S., was born in the same state in 1823. In 1850 the family was living in Giles County, Tennesseee and the children at that time were: Lucinda C., 1840; W.E.F., 1842; Lydia M.E., 1844; C.M.F., 1845; A.S., 1847; W.J., 1849; and Elen T., 1849. W.J. and Elen T. were twins. This family was living near the Elaam and Lydia Stevenson family at this time. It is believed that Elaam and Abner Stevenson were related, but the exact relationshi p is not known. A.S. (Summer) Stevenson married a woman named Matilda G. and as of 1880 they were living in Union Township in Greene County. Their children at this time were: Enoch, 1876; and Lindsey C., 1878 Sometime during the 1880 s Summer Stevenson had another s on, William A. William A. Stevenson married awoman named Eula and they had one son, Farris. As of 1916 William was principal of the West Side School in Paragould. William and Eula made their home at 601North Third at this time. As of 1939, William and Eula lived at 1028 West Court. They spent the remainder of their lives at this home. Summer Stevenson died in 1916 and was buried at the Fairview Cemetery west of Paragoufd. His wife, Matilda G., died in1933 and was buried at the same place. STIMPSON Edward C. Stimpson (Stimson) was born in Virginia in 1821. His wife, M. Elizabeth, was born in Tennessee in about 1825. In 1850 the family was living in Calloway County, Kentucky and their children were: C.H. (a son), 1846; and Rachel C., 1848. Both children were born in Kentucky. The Stimpson family moved to Greene County in about 1860 and settled in CIarkTownship. By 1870 four more children had been added to the household: Isaac W., 1854; John W., 1857; James E., 1861; and Thomas, 1864. Isaac and John were born in Kentucky. James and Thomas were born after the family moved to Arkansas. Apparently Edward C. Stimpson's first wife died during the 1870's and he married Augusta J. Draffen in Greene County on Nov. 30, 1877. Augusta was twenty-one years of age at the time. In 1880 Edward and Augusta Stimpson were living in Union Township and by this time one more child had been added to the family: Robert E., born in 1879. James E. Stimpson, son of Edward, married Susan Hoskins in Greene County on Dec. 18, 1883. Susan was fifteen years of age at the time. Susan was the daughter of J.B. and Mary J. Hoskins, born in Tennessee in 1840 and 1841respectively. As of 1916 Robert E. Stimpson and his wife, Ona, were living at 212 West Garland in Paragould. Robert was custodian of the Majestic Theater at this time. James E. Stimpson is buried at the Fairview Cemetery. His marker shows dates of 1862 and 1925. STONE Willaim M. Stone was born in South Carolina in 1825. His wife, Sarah Jane, was born in Tennessee in 1832. According to tradition, her maiden name was Cribbs. In 1850 this family was living in Gibson County, Tennessee and their children were: Benjamin , 1847; and Mary, 1850. The family arrived in Greene County, Arkansas in about 1868 and settled in HurricaneTownship. By 1870 several more children had been added to the household: William A., 1853; James B., 1854; Samuel, 1860; and Rufus M., 1865. All the children were bor n in Tennessee. Benjamin Stone married Mittie F. ~lark in Greene County on Jan. 24, 1877. Mittie was born in Tennessee in 1858. Mittie died in about 1881and on July 15, 1882 Benjamin married Mary A. Cribbs. Mary was apparently a widow. James B. Stone married Frances A. Ross on Dec. 21, 1876. Frances was born in Kentucky in 1860. They lived in Hurricane Township and as of 1880 their children were: Beatrice (a son), 1879; and Herman, 1880. Rufus M. Stone married Penina G. Farmer on Nov. 14, 1882 in Greene County. William A. Stone married awoman named Malissa, born in North Carolina in 1856. In 1880 they lived in HurricaneTownshipandtheirchildrenwere: CaIlisE., 1875; Henry, 1877;A1ie(adaughter), 1878; and Cordelia, 1879. Benjamin and Mittie Stone are buried at the Harvey's Chapel Cemetery. Benjamin's marker shows dates of 1847 and 1919. The markerfor Mitie indicates that she died in 1881. William M. and Sarah Jane are also buried at this cemetery. The markerfor Willi am shows dates of 1826 and 1881. The markerfor Sarah bears dates of 1831and 1900. A number of persons bearing the Stone name are buried at the Hartsoe Cemetery west of Marmaduke. STURKIE Daniel Sturkie was born in South Carolina in 1810. Hiswife, Casander, was born in the same state in the same year. In 1850 the familywas living in Benton County, Alabama and their children were: Hilliard C. (a son), 1833; Vandi V. (a son), 1836; Samu el A., 1837; Martha A., 1839; Mary E., 1840; William G.W., 1841; Sarah A., 1843; Frances A., 1845; Josephine A., 1846; and Daniel H., 1849. Hilliard, Vandi and Samuel were born in South Carolina, but all the younger children were born in Alabama. Daniel Sturkie Sr. apparently died during the 1860's. By 1870 his wife, Casander, was living in Cache Township of Greene County. Daniel Sturkie Jr. married awoman named Mary, born in Alabama in 1850. In 1880 Daniel and Mary, were living in Salem Township and theirchildren were: Alice, 1874; Arbry(a daughter), 1876; Casander, 1878; and Mary, 1880. Daniel's mother, Casander, was also a member of the household at this time. Several of the members of the Sturkie families are buried at the Mt. Zion Cemetery in western Greene County. However,the~urial place of Casander Sturkie (born 1810) is not known with certanity. A few Sturkie families live in western Greene County at present. SUMMERS William Summers was born in North Carolina in 1797. His wife, Polly, was born in the same state in 1804. In 1850 the family was living in Gibson County, Tennessee and their children still at home at this time were: Saba, 1820; Jane, 1830; Ely, 1835; and Mary, 1843. Ely A. W. Summers married a woman named Martha J. while still living in Tennessee. In about 1859, Ely and Martha J. moved to Greene County and settled in Union Townhsip. As of 1860 they had one child, Laura A., born in 1858. In 1870 Elyand Marthawere living in FriendshipTownshipand bythistimethree morechildren had been added to the household: Telitha E., 1861; Frances, 1865; and Artemia, 1878. Apparently Ely Summers died during the late 1870's. Martha J. Summers marr ied E.W. D. Puckett in Greene County on Dec. 26, 1879. In 1880 E.W.D. and Martha J. Puckett were living in Friendship Township. Frances and Artemia Summers were members of the household. Martha and Mary Summers, born in 1872 and 1875 respectively, were also members of the family. SWINDLE The history of the Swindle (Swindel, Swindell) family begins with William E. Swindle and his wife, Catherine, born in North Carolina and Tennessee in 1810 and 1811respectively. In 1850 this family lived in Benton County, Tennessee. Theirchildren at t his timewere Caroline, 1831; John, 1833; Martha, 1837; Henry Clay, 1839; James, 1841; and William, 1844. The Swindle family moved to Greene County, Arkansas in about 1868. William E. Swindle died in 1877 and was buried at the Fairview Cemetery. John Swindle, son of William, married Isabell Box in 1863. This information is given on his tombstone at Fairview Cemetery. Isabell Box was the daughterof Charles and Catherine Box who were residents of Humphreys County, Tennessee in 1850. Isabell wa s born in about 1836. In 1880 John and Isabell Box Swindle lived in St. Francis Township of Greene County and their children at home at this time were: Roena, 1864; Charlie, 1866; William, 1867; John, 1869; Wade, 1871; and James, 1878. E. Anderson, a cousin of John Swindl e, was living with the famiy at this time. John Swindle, son of John and Isabell Swindle, married a woman named Mary A. In 1900 they lived in Spring Grove Township of Greene County and their children were: Fred A., 1892; Wade, 1894; John L.; 1896 and Ira, 1898. John L. Swindle, son of John and Mary A., was a resident of the Center Hill Community for many years. He lived just west of the junction of Highway 25 and Bo-Gill road. He is buried at the Center Hill Cemetery. Henry Clay Swindle, son of William E. married Valencia G. Taylor in Greene County on Oct. 6, 1878. Valencia was the daughterof Charles P. Taylor(see TAYLOR, Volume I). In 1880 this familywas living in Union Township and their only child at this time was named Nevada, born in 1880. John and Isabell Box Swindle are buried at the Fairview Cemetery. Their son, William, died at the age of twenty-three and is buried near his parents. In 1850 there were two other Swindle families living near William E. and Catherine Swindle in Benton County, Tennessee. One of these was the family of Nathan and Frances Swindle, both born in North Carolina in 1802. They had one child at this time, M ary, born in 1831. The otherfamilywas that of Thomas and Marium Swindle, born in North Carolina and Tennesssee in 1814 an 1815 respectively. Their children at this time were: William, 1834; John, 1837; Isaac, 1841; Asa, 1843; Louisa, 1845; and Ferlic a Ann, 1848.
