[Excerpted here with permission of author.] GENEALOGICAL SKETCHES ALEXANDER Alexander was born in Kentucky in 1827. His wife, Mary E., was born in the same state in 1832. In 1860 this family was living in Owen County, Kentucky in the vicinity of New Liberty. Their children at this time were: Martha, 1853; Lewis P., 1857; and Robert, 1859. All the children were born in Kentucky. During the 1880's Robert Alexander moved to Graves County, Kentucky and married Mary L (Bertie) Mayes. During the 1880's the couple moved to Greene County, Arkansas and settled in Clark Township. Robert L. Alexander became the owner of a large amount of fertile land in eastern Greene County. The Alexander Church and School took their names from M r. Alexander. An article dealing with the settlements of northeastern Greene County, including the Alexander Community, appeared in Volume Six, Number One of the Greene County Historical Ouarterly. Robert L. Alexander died in 1910 and his obituary appeared on the front page of the Daily Messenger of Mayfield, Kentucky The article indicated that he had married Bertie Mayes, daughter of Mrs. Sophia Mayes of Mayfield. His death occurred in Paragould, but the funeral was conducted at the First Baptist Church in Mayfield, conducted by Rev. W. M. Woods. The obituary also indicated that Mr. Alexander had once been engaged in the banking and tobacco business in Hickman, Kentucky. I n 1916 Bertie Alexander, widow of Robert L., was living at 220 West Emerson in Paragould James W. Alexander, son of Robert, was living at the same address. James W. was the Secretary of the Independant Gin Company at 725 Bradburn. Bertie Alexander was still living at220 West Emerson in Paragould in 1939. Herson, James W., was President of the Security Bank and Trust Company at this time. James W. and his wife, Evelyn, were living in the household of Bertie Alexander. Bertie Alexander died at the Mayfield, Kentucky Hospital in 1940. Her obituary appeared on the front page of the Jan. 29,1940 issue of the Mayfield Messenger. Her funeral was conducted at the home of Wiltz W. Beadles on West Broadway in Mayfield. Rev. W. H. Horton, minister of the First Baptist Church of Mayfield, presided. The obituary indicated that Bertie was the daughter of Rollin A and Sophia M. Mayes. Rollin Mayes was a banker in Mayfield for many years. Robert L. Alexander and his wife, Bertie (Mary L.), are buried at the Maplewood Cemetery in Mayfield, Kentucky. Rollin A Mayes (1840-1906) and Sophia M. Mayes (1850-1919), parents of Bertie Mayes Alexander, are buried nearby. The 1880 census of Graves County, Kentucky shows Bertie Mayes living in the household of her grandmother, Elizabeth Mayes. Elizabeth was born in Kentucky in 1822. Elizabeth's daughter, Agnes, and son-in-iaw, William Slayden, were also members of the household. Agnes was born in Kentucky in 1848 and William was born in the same state in 1843. William and Agnes Slayden are buried near Robert L and Bertie Alexander at Maplewood Cemetery. Their marker is the tallest in the cemetery. Other members of the Slayden family are buried nearby. Several members of the Beadles families are buried in the same section of the cemetery. In 1860 two other families bearing the name of Alexander were living near the J.J. Alexander family in Owen County, Kentucky. These were the families of William D. and R. H. Alexander, born in Kentucky in 1812 and 1821. Their relationship to J.J. Alexander is not known. ALLEN Edward M. Allen was born in North Carolina in 1816. His wife, Mary was born in Georgia in 1819. In 1850 this family was living in Lee County, Georgia (microfilm page 294) and their children were: John, 1841; James, 1844; Edward, 1846; and Thomas, 1848. By 1860 the Allen family had moved to Greene County and settled in Concord Township. By this latter date, two more children had been added to the household: S. F. (a daughterly 1856; and C.S. (a son), 1860. Both children were born in Arkansas. Edward M. Allen Jr. and his wife Martha J., are buried at the Woodland Heights Cemetery in Rector, Arkansas Edward's marker shows dates of 1846 ALLISON I David Allison was born in Tennessee in 1814. His wife, Elizabeth, was born in the same slate in 1816. In 1850 this family was living in Hardin County, Tennessee and their children stil I at home were: Susan M.. 1844; John S., 1845; James, 1846; Hugh, 1848; and Elizabeth A., 1850. Del a Powell, born in 1831, was also a member of the household. By 1860 the Allison family had moved to G reene County and settled in Union Township. By this time three more children had been added to the family Mary E., 1 85Z; J.J. (a son), 1857; and David, 1857. ALLISON II Samuel B. Allison was born in Indiana in 1844. His wife, Elizabeth, was born in tne same state in 1852. In 1880 the family was living in Fall Creek Township in Hamilton County, Indiana and their children at this time were: Charles, 1871; Mary, 1873; John, 1875; William, 1876; and Minnie, 1878 John Allison, born in Ohio in 1809, was also a member of this household. By 1900 Sam and Elizabeth Allison had moved to Greene County and settled in Frieneship Township. One child, Cora E., born in Indiana in 1881 had been added to the family. In 1916 Samuel and Elizabeth Allison were living on Lake Street in Paragould. Samuel's occupation is listed in the City Directory ass farmer'. Samuel and Elizabeth are buried at the Linwood Cemetery in Paragould Samuers marker shows dates of 1844 and 1924. The marker for Elizabeth bears dates of 1851 and 1917. AMBERG Moses Amberg was born in Bavaria in 1829. H is wife, Bridgett, was born in I llinois in 1841. In 1880 this family was living in Lake County, Illinois and their children were: Sadie, 1873; and Lizzie, 1875. Both children were born in Tennessee. Mollie Pierpoint (step-daughter of Moses). born in Kentucky in 1861, was also a member of the household. By 1900 the Amberg family had moved to Greene County and settled in Clark Township. By this time one more child had been added to the household: Irene, born in 1883 in Tennessee ANDERSON John S. Anderson was born in Tennesseein about 1819. Hiswife, Sinai AM.. was born in the same state in about 1823. J ohn Anderson's county of birth is not known. However,the was a very early settler of Greene County, having arrived prior to 1840. In 1860 John and Sinai Anderson were living in Salem Township and their children at this time were: Virgin ia C., 1842; Eiizabeth J., 1844; John H., 1845; Fountain A, 1848; Martha A, 185 1: Neely P., 1855; and C. Mellon, 1 B58. AR these children were born in Arkansas. ire 1 87C Jonn and Sinai Anderson were still living in Salem Township and by this date three more children had been added to the family however the full names of these children are not given in the census record fDf 1870. AUST Rudolph Aust was bone in Ohio in 1837. His wife, Catherine. was born in the same state in 1841 in 1880 this family was living in Jefferson Township in Elkhart County, Illinois. Their children at this time were William O., 1869; Sarah, 1872; and George, 1877. All the children were born in Indiana. Joseph Aust (brother of Rudolph), born in Ohio in 1851, was also a member of this household. William O. (Owens) Aust, son of Rudolph, married a woman named Nora, born in Indiana in 1875. In 1900 there chrldren were: Charles, 1891; Cora A, 1894; and Edna 1897. Evidently, William O had returned to lodiana, married, and later returned to Greene County. In 1900 William O. and his family were living next10 his parents in Main Shore Township George Aust was still living with his parents at this time BATTLE Asaph Battle was Dorn in North Carolina in about 1813. His wife, Nancy t, was born in the same state in about 1819. Asaph H Battle and Nancy Hicks were married in Macon County. North Carolina on Jan. 9, 1836. By 1860 the Battle family had moved to Greene county, Arkansas and settled in Salem Township. Their children at home at this time were: Martha A, 1838; Mary S., 1844; and John T., 1847. Martha was born in North Carolina Mary was born in Georgia and J ohn T., in Alabama. BATTON Margaret Batton was born in North Carolina in about 1790. The name of her h usband is not known. In 1850 this family was living in Knox County, Tennessee and the other members of this household were: Catherine. 1820; Mary, 1822; Sarah, 1824; Margaret , 1826; and Nancy, 1830. Daniel A Lamonds and John Batton were also present. Daniel was born in 1846 and John, in 1848 Neither Daniel nor John were members of the immediate family. By 1860 the Batton family had moved to Greene County and settled in Concord Township Daniel Lamonds and John Batton were still members of the household at this time. John M. Batton; born in Arkansas in 1856, was also present. His relation to Margaret Batton is not known. BEARD William Jeffrey Beard was born in Arkansas in 1879. In 1900 he was living in the household of Martha Beard on West Main in Harrisburg, Arkansas (Poinsett County). William J. was unmarried at this time. Martha Beard was born in South Carolina in 1833. By 1916 William J. Beard had moved to Paragould. He and his wife, Jennie, lived at303 West Main in the city. William was the proprietor of Beard's Temple of Music located at 217 South Pruett. As of 1939 Beard's Temple of Music was still located at 217 South Pruett in Paragould. William J. and Jennie lived at 305 West Main at this time. BELIEW Aaron Beliew (Belew) was born in Tennessee in 1840. His wife, Nancy Elizabeth, was born in the same state in 1844. I n 1850 th is family was living i n Carroll County, Ten nessee and their children were: AC. (a daughter),1863; E C. (a daughtert,1867; M.J. (a daughter),1874; G. H. (a son),1876; and Iva, 1880. Charles Cooper Beliew, brother of Aaron born in Tennessee in 1869, was also a member of the household. In 1900 the Beliew familywas living in Union Township in Greene County and by this time one more child had been added to the household. This was Farrar Beliew, born in Tennessee in 1883. Homer Higgins and John Cloyd, grandsons of Aaron, were also members of the household. Homer was born in Tennessee in 1886 and John was born in Arkansas in 1895. Aaron and Nancy Beliew are buried at the Beliew Cemetery. Other persons bearing theBeliew name are buried at the Providence Cemetery. BENTON Huston Benton was born in 1854. The place of his birth is not known with certainty since some records show that it was Virginia, while others indicate that it was North Carolina. His wife, Mary l, was born in Indiana, but the year of her birth is not certain. The 1880 census gives her age as twentyseven while the 1900 census shows her age as forty. In 1880 Huston and Mary J. Benton were living in Monroe City(Harrison Township, Knox County), Indiana. Their children at this time were: James M., 1874; and William E., 1880. James was born in North Carolina, but William was born in Indiana. In about 1885 Huston and Mary Benton moved to Greene County and settled in-Friendship Township. By 1900 four more children has been added to the household: Martha 1882; Amanda E., 1883; Thomas C, 1888; and Charles G., 1893. William E. Benton was stil l living with his parents at this time. Thomas C. and Charles were born in Arkansas but all the other children were born in Indiana. Huston Benton and his son, Thomas C., are buried at the Gainesville Cemetery. Possibly other members of the family are buried there, but there are no markers for them. BERRY I James Henry Berry was born in Kentucky in 1847. His wife, Margaret E., was born in Tennessee in 1851. In 1880 this family was living in Matthews Township in Faulkner County, Arkansas and their children were: Samuel A, 1873; and William Walter, 1879. By 1900 the Berry family had moved to Greene County and settled in St. Francis Township. By this date three more children had been added to the household: Mvrtle D.. 1887; James H.V., 1889; and Harvey, 1891. William Walter was still living with his p arents at this time. BERRY II James W. Berry was born in Alabama in 1845. Hiswife, Sarah A., was born in thesame state in 1846. I n 1880 this family was living in Colbert County, Alabama ( beat two, South Florence) and their children were: Martha F., 1867; William H., 1869; Em ily, 1871; James F., 1873; John E., 1876; and George W., 1 879 By 1900 the Berry family had moved to Greene County and settled in Salem Township By this time one more child, Sarah M., had been added to the household. Sarah was born in Alabama in 1883. John BE. and George W. Berry were still living with their par ents at this time. BINKLEY John Binkley was born in Tennessee in 1827. His wife, Lavanda. was born in the same state in 1832. In 1850 this family was living in Hardeman County, Tennessee and they had no children at this time. By 1860 John and Lavanda Binkley had moved to Greene County and settled in St. Francis Township By this date two children had been added to the household: Martha A., 1851; and Rebecca F., 1858. Martha was born in Tennessee and Rebecca, in Arkansas. In 1850 another Binkley family was living very near John and Lavanda Binkley in Hardeman County, Tennessee. This was the family of John and Ellen Binkley, born in Tennessee and Georgia in 1786 and 1800 respectively. BISHOP Andrew J. Bishop was born in Alabama in 1840. His wife, Ersley, was born in the same state in about 1850. In 1880 the family was living in Weakley County, Tennessee and their children were: George F., 1872; Mary E, 1874; Arminda, 1876; Lela E., 1878; and Carl, 1880. The exact year in which the Bishop family arrived in Greene County, Arkansas is not known. However, it is known that they settled in the general vicinity of Providence Church. Ersley Pannell Bishop died in 1915 and was buried at the Providence Cemetery in northern Greene County. In 1930, at the age of ninety, Andrew J. Bishop was still able to attend a banquet in Paragould which was later known as" Bud Ryan's Party for the Old Folk". The guest roster indicated that Andrewwas born on Christmas Day, 1839 in Bibb County, Alabam a. Andrew J. Bishop is buried at the Providence Cemetery next to his wife. His marker shows dates of 1839 and 1934. His marker bears the following inscription: " Born in Bibb County, Alabama; Joined the Confederate Army, Ham Carpenter's Company B. Fifth Battalion, under General Hood in 1862." BLAGG George Blagg was born in Illinois in 1852 H is wife, Selinda, was born in the same state in 1857. I n 1880 this family was living in Carmi, Illinois (Carmi Township, White County) and their children were: William R., 1871; and Martha, 1879. By 1900 the Blagg had moved to Greene County and settled in Clark Township. Their children at home at this time were: Ora L., 1886; Ellen, 1889; Hettie, 1891; and Lehman (a son), 1895. All these children were born in Illinois. BOHANING William G. Bohaning was born in Tennessee in about 1824. His wife, Malinda N., was born in Arkansas in 1832. The county of birth of William Bohaning is not known. However, he was one of the early settlers of Greene County, having arrived sometime prior to 1850. In 1860 William and Malinda N. Bohaning were living in Union Township and their children were: Louisa, 1849; Nancy A., 1851; William G.,1854; James F., 1855; Daniel J., 1857; and Mary E., 1859. In 1870 William G. and Malinda N. were still living in Union Township and by this date two more children had been added to the household Elmona, 1862; and Estella, 1864. William G. Bohaning died sometime during the 1 870'sand in 1880 Malindawasthe head of herown household in Jones Township Five of her children were still living with her at this time. BOON Thomas Boon was born in Tennessee in 1854. His wife, Mary E. ( Mollie), was born in the same state in 1858. I n 1880 the family was living in Obion County, Tennessee and their children were: John, 1877; and Lucy, 1879. By 1900 the Boon family had moved to Greene County and settled in Hurricane Township. By this time four more children had been added to the household: Mary E., 1885; Drusilla, 1889; Elbert F., 1892; and Leona B., t 894. All the children were born in Tennessee. John Boon was still living with his parents at this time. BOREN John Boren was born in Illinois in 1853. His wife, Mary A, was born in the same state in 1855. In 1880 this family was living in Williamsburg County, Illinois in or near the town of Blairsville. Their children at this time were: Charles, 1876; and Lulu, 1879. John s sister-in-law, Martha Phemister, was also a member of the household. Martha was born in Illinois in 1860. By 1900 the Boren family had moved to Greene County and settled in Clark Township. By this date six more children had been added to the household: Luther, 1882; Hattie, 1886; Henry, 1887; Lemuel, 1891; Delbert, 1893; and John, 1895. Deibert and John were born in Arkansas and Luther was born in Illinois. All the other children were born in Missouri. BRADBERRY John Bradberry was born in Virginia in about 1 810 His wife, Sarah A., was born in NorthCarolinain 1820. In 1850 this family was living in Weakley County. Tennessee and at this time they had only one child, George M., born in 1846. By 1860 the Bradberry family had moved to Greene County and settled in Concord Township. Sally A. House, born in North Carolina in 1836, was also a member of the household. BRADFORD William A. Bradford was born in New York in 1841. H is wife, Sophia R., was born in the same state in 1842. In 1880 this family was living in Goshen, Indiana (Elkhart Township, Elkhart County). Their children at this time were: Lula, 1865; Sudie, 186 7; and Belle E., 1872. By 1900 the Bradford family had moved to Greene County and settled in Clark Township. By this time one more child had been added to the household: William born in Indiana in 1882. William's married daughter, Lucretia Boylan, and son-in-law, Arthur C. Ijoylan, were also members of the household. L ucretia was born in New York i n 1865 and ArthurC. was born in the same state in 1861. It is believed that "Lula" Bradford and "Lucretia" Bradford Boylan were one and the same person. BRADLEY The reader is referred to the Bradley sketch in Volume I of this book. As indicated in the original sketch, the Bradley family was once livi ng in Alabama. It is now known that, when the 1850 census was taken, this family was in Limestone County in t hat state. The interested reader may locate the family in this census by referring to microfilm page twenty-seven and family 379. BRADSHAW W.H.Bradshaw was born in Virginia in 1820. His wife, Letty, was born in the same state in about 1824. In 1850 this family was living in Weakley County, Tennessee and the other members of the household were: Jackson, 1830; America, 1844; Virginia, 184 5; Emily, 1847; and Elizabeth, 1849. It is believed that Jackson Bradshaw may have been a brother of W.H. By 1860 the Bradshaw family had moved to Greene County and settled in ChalK Bluff Township. By this latter date four more children had been added to the household: John, 1851; Nancy, 1855; Josiah, 1857; and Lucinda, 1859. Lucinda was born in Arkansas, but all the other children were born in Tennessee. America E. Finch was also a member of the household and it is believed that she may have been the married daughter of W.H. BRANCH James G. Branch was born in Tennessee in 1845. His wife, Martha J., was born in Arkansas in 1846. In 1880 this family was living in Powell Township of Craighead County, Arkansas and their children were: Robert W., 1872; Rosalee, 1874; Sarah P., 1874 ; James G., 1877; and John W., 1879. By 1900 the Branch family had moved to Greene County and settled in Poland Township By this date two more children had been added to the household: Joseph, 1881; and Dillen, 1884. Tennessee Wynne (Winn) was also a member of the household. Tennessee w as born in Arkansas in 1885. BROWN James M. Brown was born in Tennessee in 1830. His wife, Susan, was born in the same state in 1846. In 1880 this family was living in Crockett County, Tennessee and their children were: David C, 1861; William J.. 1863; Leanna 1 865; Joseph, 1867; John T., 1869; and Arthur A, 1876. All the children were born in Tennessee. Mary G. Childers, born in Tennessee in 1844, was also a member of the household. She was the sister-in-law of James M. Brown. By 1900 the Brown family had moved to Greene County and settled in Clark Township. James M. and Susan M. Brown are buried at the Linwood Cemetery in Paragould. James' marker shows dates of 1832 and 1901. The marker for Susan bears dates of 1842 and 1914 . Maude E. Brown(1883-1915) is buried nearby. BURCHET Dennis Burchet ( Burchett) was born in Tennessee in about 1820 His wife Mahala, was born in the same state in 1824. In 1850 this family was living in McNairy County, Tennessee and their children were: Eli, 1841; John,1843; Larkin, 1845; Malissa,1846; Emaline, 1847; and Elizabeth, 1849. By 1860 the Bu rch et family had moved to G reene Cou nty and settled in Concord Township. By th is latter date five more children had been added to the household: J J.W. 1850; Sarah, 1852; Nancy, 1854; Lavina, 1855; and James, 1856. In 1860 Eli Burchet, son of Dennis, was living in a separate household next to his parents in Concord Township. John W. and Martha Burchet, born in Tennessee in 1842 and 1852 respectively, were present in the same household. BURNS I Alexander L. Burns was born i n Te nnessee in 1827. H is wife, Mary A., was born in North Carolina i n 1831. In 1850 this family was living in Henderson County, Tennessee and at this time they had only one child, Columbus, born in 1849. By 1860 the Burns family had moved to Greene County and settled in Concord Township. By the latter date four more children had been added to the household S. D., 1852; Elves, 1854; Ann, 1856; and M.D.L., 1859. The two older children were born in Tenn essee and the two younger ones, in Arkansas. William Nobles, born in North Carolina in 1838, was also a member of the household. BURNS II Upham Burns was born in Georgia in 1795. His wife, Elizabeth, was born in Alabama in 1807. In 1850 this fam ily was living i n H ardin County, Tennessee and their children still at home were: Ti I man H. 1829; George W.,1832; Frederick A.,1833; Andre w J.,1836; Maria L.,1838; Rufus K,1840; Upham B., 1842. and Morgan D, 1844. Tilman and George were born in Mississippi, but all the other children were born in Tennessee. Nancy Lassiter, born in 1844, was also present. Upham B. Burns apparently died sometime during the 1850's. In 1860 the Burns family was living in Concord Township in Greene County and Elizabeth was the head of the household No new children had been added to the household by this latter date. Nancy Lassiter was still living with the family at this time. In 1870 Andrew J. and George we. Burns were living in Concord Townshi p in Greene Co u nty. They apparentiv became residents of Clay County, Arkansas when it was formed in 1873. BURROW Perry L. Burrow (Barrow) was born in Ohio in 1855. His wife, Adaline (Addie), was born in Tennessee in t 859. In 1880 this familywas living in Dry Point Township in Shelby County, Illinois and,at this time, they had one child, Francis, born in Illino is in 1880. The Burrow family was living in the household of Dolphas Banning at this time. By 1900 the Burrow family had moved to Greene County and settled in Bryan Township. By this ti me f ou r more children had been added to the fam i ly: Jo nets 1883; Thomas, 1887; G raves, 1889; and Willie, 1892. BURTON Richard C. Burton was born in North Carolina in 1800. His wife, Mary [E. Simpson b KY], was born in Tennessee in 1804. In 1850 this family was living in Henry County, Tennessee and their children were: Elizabeth, 1830; Valentine, 1832; Triana, 1834; Mary J., 1836; Ric hard, 1838; and Smith Al 1841. Jasper Collins, born in 1835, was also a member of the household. In 1880 Smith A. Burton, so n of Richard, was living in Johnson Township of Clay County, Arkansas. He had married a woman named Martha E.[Bennett], born in Tennessee in 1841. In 1880 their children were: Travis E., 1867; William J., 1868; Mary A.,1873; Elizabeth T.,1875; Richard F.,1876; Smith, 1877; and Leona C., 1880. Travis was born in Mississippi. William and Mary were born in Tennessee. Elizabeth and Richard were born in Missouri. Smith and Leona were born Arkansas. The states of birth of these children indicate the movements of the family. By 1900 the Burton family had moved to Greene County and settled in Poland Township. By this date two more children, Mack A. and Robert E., had been added to the family.
