[Excerpted here with permission of author.] GENEALOGICAL SKETCHES CAGLE Adam Cagle was born in Tennessee in 18 1 7. His wife, Mary, was born in the same state in 1815. The county of Adam Cagle's birth is not known. However, he was one of t he very early settlers of Greene County, having arrived prior to 1850. In 1850 the family was living in Big Creek Township and their children were: Alfred, 1840; Henry, 1843; Elizabeth, 1845; and Lemuel, 1848. In 1860 the Adam Cagle family was living in Concord Township and by this latter date one more child, Adam, had been added to the household Adam was born in 1851. CHANDLER William Chandler was born in Kentucky in 1820 His wife, Elizabeth, was born in Maryland in 1818 In 1850 this family was living in Hardeman County, Tennessee and their children at this time were: William, 1840; Samuel, 1842; Almedia, 1844; Laura, 1846; and Christianna, 1848. By 1860 the Chandler fam ily had moved to Greene Cou nty and settled i n St. Francis Townsh ip By this latter date two more children had been added to the household: Z. T. (a son), 1851; and James E, 1854. CHAPPELL Christopher C Chappell(Chapel) was born in Tennesee in 1856. His wife, Margaret E., was born in Kentucky in the same year Christopher Chappell and Margaret E. Castleberry were married in Greene County, Arkansas on Jan. 24, 1877. In 1880 this familywa s living in Big CreekTownship in Craighead County. Their children at this time were: Minnie M., 1878; and Daisy, 1880. Walter B. Crenshaw, nephew of Christopher, was also a member of the household. Walter was born in Missouri in 1875. By 1900 the Chappell family had moved to Greene County and settled in Salem Township. By this date Margaret E. Chappell had apparently died and Chris had married a woman named Elanor, born in Tennessee in 1866. By 1900 four more children had been add ed to the household: Fanny M., 1884; John M., 1887; Sallie H., 1889; and William C., 1893. Mary J. Dodson, step- daughter of Christopher, was also a member of the household. George W. Young, nephew of Christopher, was also present. Mary J. Dodson was born in Alabama in 1886. George W. Young was born in Arkansas in 1884. CHEATHAM John B. Cheatham was born in Tennessee in 1809 His wife, Lavina, was born in the same state in 1824. | n 1850 this family was living in Ph illips County, Arkansas and their children were: Buntry(a son), 1840; Martha A.F., 1842; W.H.H. (a son), 1846; Medora, 1847; and Sarah C., 1849. By 1860 the Cheatham fam ily had moved to Greene County and settled in Chalk Bluff Townsh i p. By this latterdatefourmorechildren had been added to the household: A, 185 1; John, 1854; Kate, 1857; and Belle, 1859. All of the children of John Cheatham were born in Arkansas. CLANTON Linsay ( Linzy) Clanton was born in South Carolina in 1791. H is wife, Malinda, was born in the same state in 1822. In 1850 the family was living in Lauderdale County, Alabama (microfilm page 255) and theirchildren were: Martha,1837; William,1839; Ma ry,1842; Delila,1845; and Lavinia,1847. Mary was born in Tennessee, but all the other children were born in Alabama. By 1860 the Clanton family had moved to Greene County and settled in Salem Township. By this date three more children had been added to the household: John, 1853; Aaron, 1854; and David N., 1858. John was born in Alabama, but Aaron and David were bor n in Tennessee. From the states of birth given for the Clanton children, it wi 11 be seen that the family moved back and forth across the Alabama-Tennessee boundary. It seems likely that some of the children were born in Hardin or Wayne County, Tennessee. COLE The reader is referred to the Cole II sketch in Volume l of this book Since that sketch was written, some new inf ormation regarding this family has been found. The William and Ann Cole family were living in Benton County, Tennessee in 1850. They may be found by referring to page 582, family number 168 of the 1850 census for this county. COLLIER Merton F. Collier was born in Kentucky in 1849. H is wife, Sophia E., was born in Louisiana in 1856. In 1880 this family was living in Demun Township in Randolph County, Arkansas in or near the town of Pocahontas. Their children at this time were: Eu gene, 1877; and Alma, 1879. By 1900 the Collier family had moved to Greene County and settled i n Clark Township. By th is date eig ht more children had been added to the household: H enry B., 1884; Thomas W., 1886; Lau ra, 1888; Mazey, 1890; Merton F., 1892; Irma, 1894; Tessie , 1897; and Ruby, 1900. CONGER Perry Conger was born in Indiana in 1840. His wife, Lucinda, was born in the same state in 1845. In 1880 this family was living in Washington Township in Gibson County, Indiana and their children were: Ella. 1863; Joseph, 1868; Dora, 1871; and Charles , 1879. By 1900 the Conger family had moved to Greene County and settled in Hurricane Township. Charles H. Conger was still living with his parents at this time. COOK I G.W. Cook was born in Tennessee in 1815. His wife, Virginia, was born in the same state in 1823. In 1850 this family was living in Wayne County, Tennessee and their children were: Mary E., 1838; Thomas, 1841; America, 1843; Margaret, 1845; and John, 1848. By 1860 the Cook family had moved to Greene Cou nty and settled in Salem Township. By this latter date three more children had been added to the household: E iza, 1853; Priscilla, 1858; and Joseph, 1860. El zl was born in Missouri, but Priscilla and Joseph were born in Arkansas. COOK II Martin L. Cook was born in Kentucky in 1819. His wife, Eda, was born in Tennessee in the same year. The county of birth of Martin L. Cook is not known. However, he was one of the early settlers of Greene County, having arrived at some time prior to 1850. In 1850 Martin and Eda were living in Big Creek Township and their children were: Margaret, 1844; John, 1846; and Nancy, 1848. By 1860 Martin and Eda Cook were living in Salem Township and by this latter date two more children had been added to the household: Levi W., 1856; and Mary, 1858 In 1870 the Cook fam ily was still living i n Salem Township and three of their children were still living with them. Martin and Eda Cook continued to live in Salem Township at least until 1880. At this latter date none of their children remained at home. COSBY William Cosby was born in Alabama in 1811. His wife, Rutha, was born in Tennessee in 1812. In 1850 this fam ily was I iving in Wayne County, Alabama and their chi Idren were: James, 1834; Elizabeth, 1836; John,1838; Mary,1840; Nancy,1842; Susan,1844; Martha A.,1847; and Robert,1849. James, the oldest child, was born in Tennessee. Martha and Robert were born in Missouri. All of the Other children were born in Mississippi. By 2860 the Cosby family had moved to Greene County and settled in Concord Township. By this latter date one more child, Johnson, had been added to the household. Johnson was born in Arkansas in 1853. COX I Jonathan B. Cox was born in Tennessee in 1807. H is wife, Lucy, was born in the same state in 1808. In 1850 this family was living in Benton County, Tennessee and their children at this time were: Nathaniel,1832; Rebecca, 1834; Leuellen, 1835; James, 1840; Wyly, 1843; Mary,1845; and Kinchen, 1849. In 1860 the Cox fam ily was still living in Benton County, Tennessee and by this latter date one more child, Price, had been added to the hosuehold. Price was born in Tennessee in 1852. Nathaniel ( Natt) Cox married a woman named Sally( Sarah), born in Tennessee in 1835.1 n 1860 this fam ily was liv ing very near Jonathan B. Cox and their children at this time were: Sarah Green 1855; Augustus,1860. James Cox married a woman named Panina, born in Tennessee in 1834 In 1860 they were living next to Natt and Sally Cox and they had no children at this time. Price Cox was married three times. His first wife was Mary Emily Gibbs, born in 1852 Their children were: Sarah Caledonia. 1873; LauraJane, 1875; John Wily, 1876; MarthaAlice, 1879; Edward W., 1881; George E., 1884; and James F., 1885. Jame F. died in infancy. Mary Emily Gibbs Cox died on Jan. 29, 1885 very soon after her last child, James F., was born. On April 23,1885 Price married Mrs. Sarah Ellen Gibbs Cummings. She was the sister of his f irst wife. Price and Sarah had only one child, Ida Bennett, bor n in 1889. Sarah died on June 29,1894. On July 4,1895 Price Cox married Louisa Boyce. She was the daughter of Frartcis and Matilda Watson Boyce. Francis was born in Virginia i n about 1835. The ch ild ren of Price and Lou isa were: Ezra, 1896; Esther,1897; Leno,1899; Emma Jane, 1902; Ever itt Price, 1905; Lydia 1907; and Jonathan Boyce, 1909. Ezra died in infancy. Price Cox was the Superintendent of the Sunday School at the Shiloh Methodist Church for many years. He was also a well-known and respected member of the Shiloh Community and Spring Grove Township. H e died in an automobile accident in 1929 and h is obituary appeared in the August 24,1929 issue of the Paragould Daily Press. He was the father of fifteen children, with eleven living at the time of his death. He was survived_by his wife, Louisa. Price Cox was also survived by his seven daughters: Mrs. Wesley Higgins, Mrs. John Thomas Higgins, Mrs. Cecil Speer, Mrs. Bryan Spillman, all of Routes (now Route4), Paragould; Mrs. Thomas Hopper of Arbyrd, Missouri; Mrs. Frank Robinson of Trumann, A rkansas and Mrs. Earl Speer of Greenway, Arkansas. Other survivors were four sons: Edward, George, Everitt Price, and Jonathan Boyce Cox, all of Route 5, Paragould. Price Cox was buried at the Shiloh Cemetery near the Shiloh Church. H is wife, Louisa, died on Feb. 21,1933 and was buried next to her husband at Shiloh. Price Cox's successor as Superintendent of the Sunday School at Shiloh was Mr. Nathan Mabry. Nat han Mabry was, like Mr. Cox, an active layman in the Church and a well-known figure in the corn munity for many years. Together these two men served Shiloh Church for a very large part of its history. COX II W.A Cox was born in Virginia in 1815. His wife, Hiley A., was born in Tennessee in 1818. In 1850 this family was living in Weakley County, Tennessee and their children were: Ballard, 1840; Leanna, 1841; Henry, 1843; William, 1845; and Emily, 1847. All the children were born in Tennessee. By 1860 the Cox family had moved to Greene County and settled in Concord Township. No new children had been added to the household by this date. In 1870 W.A (William A) Cox and his wife, H iley, were living in Johnson Township of Greene County. Their sons, William A Jr and Henry B., were also residents of Johnson Township. Apparently the Cox people became residents of Clay County, Arkansas wh en it was formed in 1873. CREWS I D.J. Crews (Creus) was born in Virginia in 1810. His wife, Mary A., was born in Tennessee in 1824. Mary A is believed to have been the second wife of D.J. Crews. In t 850 the family was living in Weakley County, Tennessee and the children at this tim e were: Cornelius. 1834; Sarah, 1836; Margaret, 1837: Mary,1840; William,1843; Thomas,1847; Martha,1848; and John,1850. Tradition has it that the Crews family lived in Bedford County, Tennessee prior to moving to Weakley County. During the 1850's the Crews family moved to Greene County and settled in Concord Township. Concord Township became a part of Clay County when it ws formed in 1873. Since that time the history of the Crews family has belonged primarily to Clay County. In 1850 another Crews family was living next to D.J. and Mary Crews in Weakley County, Tennessee. This was the family of W. and Martha Crews, born in Virginia and Tennessee in 1814 and 1816 respectively. CREWS II William Crews (Creus) was born in Virginia in 1815. His wife, Martha, was born in Tennessee in 1817. In 1850 this family was living in Weakley County, Tennessee and their children at home at this time,were: Ann,1839; James,1840; Charlotte,1842; Willi am,1844; George,1845; Jane,1846; Sarah, 1847; and Mary, 1849. By 1860 the Crews family had moved to Greene County and settled in Concord Township. By this latter date one more child, Martha, had been added to the household. Martha was born in Tennessee in 1854. In 1850 another Crews family was living next to William and Martha Crews in Weakley County, Tennessee. This was the family of D.J. and Mary A. Crews; a sketch on this family is presented elsewhere in this volume. It should also be pointed out that th e two Crews families lived next to each other after moving to Greene County, Arkansas. CRITTENDEN Shelby Crittenden was born in North Carolina in 1820. His wife, Sarah A., was born in Kentucky in 1822. In 1850 this family was living in Henry County, Tennessee and their children were: Will iam H., 1840; Martha. 1842; Mary J., 1844; Thomas, 1846; and Andrew, 1849. The Crittenden family moved to Greene County and settled i n Concord Townsh ip during the 1860's. By 1870 four more children had been added to the household: Sarah E., 1852; Nancy A, 1854; Manda L., 1858 and Shelby C, 1863. Apparently the Crittenden family became residents of Clay County, Arkansas when it was formed in 1873. CROCKETT P. Crockett was born in Tennessee in 1809. His wife, Fanny, was born in the same state in 1815. In 1850 this family was I iving in Weakley County, Tennessee and thei r children were: Mary, 1835; Martha, 1838; Catherine,1841; Lucinda,1843; William,184 5; John,1847; and James,1849. P. Crockett apparently died sometime during the 1850's. In 1860 Fannie was the head of her own household in Bradshaw Township in Greene County, Arkansas By this latter date two more children had been added to the household: Isaac, 1858; and Manerva, 1858. CROWELL Evan A Crowell was born in North Carolina in 1814. Hiswife, Catherine, was born in the same state in 1817. I n 1850 the family was living in Smith County, Tennessee and thei r children were: Elizabeth P., 1837; Mary A.J., 1838; Nancy e., 1840; Sylvann A, 1842; Margaret, 1844; James B., 1846; Henry B., 1847; and Malinda C., 1850. In 1880 James B. Crowell, son of Evan, and his wife, Frances, were living in Murphysboro Township in Jackson Cou nty, I llinois. Their children at this time were: Roy, 1874; Lily, 1876; and Leonard, 1879. Frances Crowell was born in Illinois in 1852. All of the children were also born in that state. William J. Sorrels (cousin of James B. Crowed, born in Illinois in 1867, was also a member of the household. By 1900 the James B. Crowell family had moved to Greene County and settled in Union Township. By this time two more children had been added to the household: Letha, 1884; and Lizzie, 1887. Leonard Crowell was still living with his parents at this tim e. Thomas Fulghum (nephew of James B. Crowell), born in Missouri in 1892, was also a member of the household. DAVENPORT James I. Davenport (Deavenport) was born in Georgia in 1853. His wife, Mary A, was born in Arkansas in 1859. In 1880 this family was living in Powell Township of Craighead County, Arkansas. Their children at this time were: Davis R., 1875; and James S., 1878. By 1900 the Davenport family had moved to G reene County and settled in Spring Grove Township. By this date two more children had been added to the household: Onie M. (a daughter), 1890; and Martha, 1898. DEAN William Dean was born in North Carolina in 1796. His wife, Elizabeth, was born in the same state in 1800. In 1850 th is family was living in Gibson Cou nty, Tennessee and their children still at home were: Penny, 1820; Eliza, 1830; Sarah, 1833; and J ulia 1836. In 1870 William and Elizabeth Dean were living in Chalk Bluff Township in Greene County, Arkansas. The census record indicates that they were both disabled at this time and that Penny was the housekeeper for the family. By 1870 two more children had been added to the household: Fanny, 1856; and Cynthia, 1858. Apparently the Dean family became residents of ClayCounty, Arkansaswhen it was formed in 1873. DEMOSS Lewis Demoss was born in South Carolina in 1792. His wife, Mary, was born in North Carolina in 1806. In 1850 this family was living in Carroll County, Tennessee and their children were: Shelton F., 1821; William B., 1832; Henry C., 1838; Thomas L., 1 842; Levi W., 1843: and Mary, 1845. William B. Demoss married a woman named Keziah while still in Tennessee. In 1870 this family was living in Greene County in Chalk Bluff Township and their children were: Robert L., 1857; Fanny 1. 1860; and Jose Bell, 1868. Jose Bell was born in Misso uri but all the other children were born in Tennessee. Apparently the Demoss family became residents of Clay County, Arkansas when it was formed in 1873. DODSON J.B. Dodson was born in Tennessee in 1856. His wife, Maggie, was born in Mississippi in the same year. In 1900 this family was living in Keevil Township in Monroe County, Arkansas and their children were: Wiley, 1881; Columbus, 1885; Mary Pearley, 18 88; Luther, 1891; and Willie (a son), 1899. At some time prior to 1916 the Dodson family moved to Greene County, Arkansas. Luther Dodson married awoman named Ethyl and they lived on what is now South Rocking ChairRoad in the CenterHill area. Several of their children, including Adrain and Evel yn, once attended the Center Hill School. Luther Dodson later moved to Hayti, Missouri and established a shop for the construction of truck bodies. Maggie Jane Dodson, wife of J. B., is buried at the Center Hi II Cemetery and her marker shows dates of March 16,1856 and Sept. 3,1936. Columbus F. Dodson is buried at the same place and his stone bears dates of Sept. 7,1884 and Oct. 4,1944. DRAPER Albert Draper was born in Illinois in t 850. His wife, Mary, was born in lowa in 1862. In 1880 this family was living in Sullivan County, Missouri and at this time they had one child, Rolla, born in 1879. By 1900 the Draper fam ily had moved to Greene County and setled in Union Township. By this date one more child, Mollie (Mary, Polly), had been added to the household. Mollie was born inArkansasin 1881. Rolla Draper was still living with his parents at this time. Albert Draper is buried at the Beech Grove Cemetery in western Greene County. His marker bears dates of 1850 and 1914. EDWARDS John C. Edwards was born in Georgia in 1856. His wife, Mary M., was born in Arkansas in 1859. In 1880 this family was living in Powell Township in Craighead County, Arkansas and at this time they had only one child, Charles, born in Arkansas in 1879. By 1900 the Edwards family had moved to Greene County and settled in St. Francis Township. By this date three more children had been added to the household: Joseph A, 1884; Della V., 1888; and Susie, 1891. Charles Edwards was still living with his pa rents at this time. Luola Hare, John's sister-inlaw, was also a member of the household. Luola was born in Arkansas in 1883. ELLIS Caleb E. Ellis was born in Illinois in 1853. His wife, Alice, was born in the same state in 1854. In 1880 this family was living in McLeansboro Precinct in Ham ilton County, l llinois and their chidren were: Walter A, 1876; and Martin E., 1878. By 1900 the Ellis family had moved to Greene County and settled in Clark Township. By this time two more children had been added to the household: Clarence, 1883; and Clyde, 1886. In 1916 Walter A. Ellis and h is wife, Grace, were living at 320 South Seventh in Paragould. Walter was a department manager at the S. L.Joseph Store at this time. Clyde Ellis and his wife, Lela, lived at 401 North Third in th e City. Clyde operated a grocery store at 114 West Main. Grace Ellis, wife of Walter, was a clerk at the National Bank of Commerce. in 1939 Grace was Assistant Cashier at the Bank. Walter was a bookkeeper for the Barnsdall Oil Company at this time. Caleb E. and Alice Ellis are buried at the Linwood Cemetery in Paragould. Caleb's marker shows dates of Aug. 19,1853 and Jan. 25,193 1. The marker for Alice bears dates of J uly24, 1854 and Jan. 2 1, 1911. Emorey E. Ellis, son of Caleb, is also burie d at Linwood and his marker shows dates of Oct. 14, 1878 and Feb. 14, 1948. EUBANKS James Eubanks was born in South Carolina in 1801. H is wife, Frances, was born in the same state in 1811. In 1850 the family was living in Murray County, Georgia and their children were: John B., 1830; Ally B.(a daughter), 1833; Frances, 1836; Tabitha 1839; Posey(ason),1841; Johnson J., 1844; and Arminda, 1847. In 1850 another Eubanks fam ily lived next to the James Eubanks family in Murray County, Georg ia Th is was the family of William P. and Sarah Eubanks, born in Georgia in 1824 and 1826 respectively. Their children at this time were: Frances, 1846; and John, 1848. It is believed that William P. may have been an older son of James, but there is no positive evidence on this point By 1860 the families of James Eubanks and William P. Eubanks had moved to Greene County and settled in Cache Township very near each other. By this time several more children had been added to the household of William P. Eubanks: Pinkney, 1850; Juliu s, 1852; Sanora, 1854; Buchanan, 1856; and Alley A, 1860. All of these children were born in Georgia. IsaacAutry, born in Arkansas in 1840, was also a member of the household. In 1870 the family of William P. Eubanks was still living in Cache Township and, by this time, four more children had been added to the family: M uita, 1862; James P. 1863; Henry G., 1865; and Thomas Lee, 1869. By 1880 William P. Eubanks had apparently died. At this time his wife, Sarah, was the head of her own household in Cache Township. Arminda Eubanks married Jeptha Futrell and two of their children were Daniel and Junius Marion Futrell. Junius Marion was later to become the governor of Arkansas (see FUTRELL, Volume I). FITE John C. Fite was born in Tennessee in 1829. His wife, Elizabeth, was born in the same state in the same year. l n 1850 this fam ilywas living in Dekalb County, Ten nessee and at this time they had only one child, Mary N., born in 1849. In 1870 the Fite family was living in Johnson Township in Greene County, Arkansas Their children at home at this time were: Elbert J., 1852; Artell Bell, 1862; John 0.,1863; AJ. (a son), 1867; and Lueller, 1869. Elbert and Artell Bell were born in Te nnessee, but all the other children were born in Illinois. Apparently the Fite people became residents of Clay County, Arkansas when it was formed in 1873. FLIPPEN Thomas L. Flippen was born in Tennessee in 1855. His wife, Samantha J., was born in the same state in 1859. In 1880 this family was living in Gibson County. Tennessee and their children were: Joseph M., 1876; William T., 1877; and George Lee, 1880. By 1900 the Flippen family had moved to Greene County and settled in Clark Township. By this time five more children had been added to the household: Charles E., 1883; Minnie P., 1886; Luckie, 1890, Albert, 1892; and Eugene, 1898. Charles was born in Tennessee but all the younger children were born in Arkansas. William Flippin was still living with his parents at this time. Thomas Flippin died in 1902 and was buried at the Center Hill Cemetery. Samantha died in 1940 and was buried at the same place. In 1916 Albert Flippin was living at 717 East Court in Paragould. Eugene Flippen was living at 313 North Eighth at this time. William T. Fl ippen operated a barbershop at 219 Fourth Avenue and his home was at 716 Lake in the City. FORD I Benjamin F. Ford was the son of James S. and Martha Ford (see FORD, Vol. I0. He married a woman named Amanda, born in Illinois in 1853. In 1880 Benjamin and Amanda were living in Chalk Bluff Township in Clay County, Arkansas and their children were: Mina, 1877; and Ann, 1880. By 1900 Ben and Martha Ford had moved to Greene County and settled in Friendship Township. By this time another child James, had been added to the household. James was born in Arkansas in 1883. Benjamin had also adopted a boy named Roger D., born in Arkansas in 1895. FORD II Green B. Ford was born in Tennessee in 1821. His wife, Nancy, was born in Virginia in 1823. In 1850 this family was living in Claiborne County, Tennessee and their children were: Thomas, 1841; Margaret, 1843; Susan. 1846; and Emma, 1848. By 1860 the Ford family had moved to Greene County and settled in Concord Township. By this latter date several more children had been added to the household: Sarah, 1851; Catherine, 1851; G.W.(a son), 1854; W.P.(a son), 1856; and James, 1859. Sarah and Catherine were born in Tennessee, but all the other children were born in Arkansas .
