[Excerpted here with permission of author.] GENEALOGICAL SKETCHES MAGNESS Z. C. Magness was born in Tennessee in 1807. His wife, Frances S., was born in Alabama in about 1809.1 n 1850 this family was living in Calloway County, Kentucky. Their nine children are listed, in the 1850 census record, by their initials only. The interested reader may locate this family by referring to family number 136 in that record. By 1860 the Magness family had moved to Greene County and settled in Union Township. Their sons, John W. and Z. B., were still at home at this time. John W. and Z. B. Magness were born in Kentucky in 1844 and 1849 respectively. MARTIN Mary Martin was born in Tennessee in 1807. In 1850 Mary was living in Warren County, Tennessee and her children were: Mary, 1826; Catherine, 1828; Jane, 1832; Telitha, 1836; Elizabeth, 1838; James K. P., 1842; and Sampson, 1846. Elizabeth Martin married D. C. Norvell. The family moved to Greene County and settled in Clark Township in about 1885. D. C. Norvell died in 1902 and was buried at the Linwood Cemetery. Elizabeth died in 1920 and was buried at the same place. Her obituary appeared in the June 2,1920 issue of the Paragould Soliphone This obituary indicated that she was born in Warren County, Tennessee. She was survived by three children: Mrs. Charles Hale and Mrs. W. D. Barton, both of Jonesboro, Arkansas; and E. Grady Norvell of 200 West Garland in Paragould. Elizabeth was the oldest resident of Paragould at the time of her death. E. Grady Norvell and his wife, Ida S., are buried at Linwood Cemetery. Grady's marker shows date of 1865 and 1952. The marker for Ida bears dates of 1887 and 1962. McAFEE Elizabeth McAfee was born in Tennessee in about 1816. The name of her husband is not known. In 1850 Elizabeth was the head of her own household in Madison County, Tennessee and her children still at home were: Sally A,1831; William, 1834; Elizabeth, 1837; Asa, 1840; and Belle,1842. Sally was born in Illinois, but all the other children were born in Tennessee. By 1860 Elizabeth McAfee and her daughter, Sarah, had moved to Greene County and settled in Union Township. They were living in the household of Thomas Silson who had apparently married Elizabeth's daughter, Belle. McCLUSKY L. McClusky was born in Kentucky in 1812. His wife, Dorcas, was born in Tennessee in 1823. In 1850 the family was living in Weakley County, Tennessee and their children were: Mary, 1839; William, 1841; Isabel, 1843; John, 1845; and Joseph, 1848. By 1860 the McClusky family had moved to Greene County and settled in Bradshaw Township. By the latter date two more children had been added to the household: Nancy E,1851; and James R, 1854. Nancy was born in Tennessee, but James was born in Arkansas. McDANIEL I The reader is referred to the McDANIEL sketch in Volume l of this book. Grainger McDaniel moved to the state of Texas in about 1837. Most of his brothers and sisters settled in Greene County, Arkansas during the 1830's or 1840's. In 1850 Grainger McDaniel was living in Milam County, Texas and the other members of his household were: Mary,1814; Abner, 1829; Elizabeth, 1832; Stacey, 1833; David, 1835; Sarah, 1838; Mary A, 1840; Mahaley, 1842; Matilda, 1843; Lewis, 1846; Genette (a daughter), 1848; and John, 1850. The interested reader may use this census as a starting point for tracing the Grainger McDaniel descendants down to the present time in the state of Texas. McDANIEL II R W. McDaniel was born in Tennessee in 1827. H is wife, Sarah, was born in the same state in 1831. In 1850 this family was living in Henderson County, Tennessee and they had no children at this time. Elender McDaniel, born in 1831, was also a member of the household. By 1860 the McDaniel family had moved to Greene County and settled in Union Township. Their children at this time were: Jincy,1851; Mary S., 1852; John W., 1854; ElizaA,1855; and Joseph, 1859. Eliza A and Joseph were born in Arkansas, but all the older children were born in Tennessee. McDERMIT William D. McDermit (McDearmott) was born in Tennessee in 1811. His wife, Acenith, was born in North Carolina in 1815. In 1850 this family was living in Gibson County, Tennessee and their children were: James, 1833; Elizabeth, 1836; Amanda, 1838; 8arah, 1840; and William, 1848. All the children were born in Tennessee. By 1860 the McDermit family had moved to Greene County and settled in Union Township By the latter date three more children had been added to the household Rufus Alonzo, 1850; Zilpha, 1854; and Jefferson, 1858. William D. McDermit apparently died sometime during the 1860's. In 1870 Acenith was the head of her own household in Friendship Township. Her children, Rufus Alonzo, Zilpha, and Jefferson D., were still members of her household. Two orphan children, Ann and Mary A Thomason, were also present. Ann and Mary A were born in Arkansas in 1862 and 1865 respectively. In 1880 Acenith McDermit was still living in Friendship Township. Her son, Rufus Alonzo, was the only member of her household. McMILLAN George McMillan was born in Kentucky in 1851. His wife, Ruth A, was born in the same state in 1849. In 1880 this family was living in the Grassy Creek District in Pendleton County, Kentucky. At this time their children were: William H., 1872; Cassius, 1874; Oddie (a son), 1876; Leslie H. (a son), 1878; and Rose May, 1880. By 1900 the McMillan family had moved to Greene County and settled in Friendship Township. Apparently no more children had been added to the household by this date. However, Albert A McMillan, a nephew of George, was living with the family at this time. Albert was born in Kentucky in 1881. Leslie H. McMillan was still living with his parents in 1900. McNEIL Neal McNeil was one of the very early settlers of Greene County, Arkansas having arrived sometime before 1840. He was born in Tennessee in about 1820, but the county of his birth is not known. His wife, Nancy, was also born in Tennessee in 1820. In 1850 the McNeil family was living in Big Creek Township in Greene County and their children were: Sarah, 1836; Pamela, 1841; Mary,1844; Ruthy, 1846; George, 1847; James, 1849; and John, 1850. A monument for Neal McNeil and his wife, Nancy, was erected at the Scatterville Cemetery in Clay County, Arkansas. (A bronze historical marker has also been placed at this cemetery.) The McNeil monument indicates that Neal McNeil died on Feb.1, 1858 and was buried at Helena, Arkansas. The monument also shows that his wife died on Feb 26,1890 at the age of seventy-five years. In 1860 Nancy McNeil, widow of Neal, was living in Concord Township in Greene County. By this date three more children had been added to the household: Larken, 1852; Nancy,1853; and Thomas, 1856. Ruthy, George, James, and John McNeil were still living with their mother at this time. Clay County, Arkansas was formed in 1873 and took in part of northern Greene County. Since this date the history of the McNeil- family has been a part of the history of Clay County. McWHIRTER R W. McWhirter (McQurter) was born in North Carolina in 1811. His wife, Sarah, was born in the same state in the same year. In 1850 this family was living in Lawrence County, Tennessee and their children still at home were: Mary A E., 1828; Martha C., 1830; Sarah R, 1832; Isabella L.,1837; George R,1839; J. K. P. (James K Polk?), 1841; and Margaret L., 1845. By 1860 the McWhirter family had moved to Greene County and settled in Union Township. Evidently no new children had been added to the household during the decade of the 1850's. MEALER John Mealer was born in Virginia in 1820. His wife, Prudence A, was born in Tennessee in 1826. In 1850 this family was living in Giles County, Tennessee and their children were: Nicholas M.,1883; Sarah E., 1844; William H., 1846; Norbum R, 1848; and James K P.,1850. By 1860 the Mealer family had moved to Greene County and settled in Union Township. By this latter date four more children had been added to the household: Eliza A,1851; Lucy A, 1855; Susan R, 1858; and Nancy C, 1859. All these children were born in Arkansas. John Mealer apparently died during the 18B0'a In 1870 Prudence A was living in Clark Township. Her son, Norbum, was listed, In the census record, as the head of the household Several of Norbum's younger sisters were also members of the household at the time. MERIWETHER Albert Meriwether was born In Virginia In 1803. In 1850 he and his wife, Catherine (believed to be a second wife), were living In Hickman County, Kentucky and their children still at home were: W. W., 1833; Robert,1835; Hannah, 1837; M. C,1840; 1 D., 1844; S. C, 1846; and H. W.,1849. All these children were born In Kentucky. Catherine, wife of Albert, was born In Virginia In 1811. A great deal of detailed information regarding the Meriwether family In America may be found in the book entitled "The Meriwethers and Their Connections". This work was written by Nelson Heath Meriwether. According to Mr. Meriwether, the initials(W. W., M. C, J. D., S. C, and H. W.) stood for William Winston, Mariah Catherine, James David, Sarah Chew, and Harriet Winslow respectively. A copy of this volume may be found in the Public Library at Jonesboro, Arkansas. It is believed that the Meriwether family came to Paragould sometime during the 1880's. William Winston Meriwether established the Meriwether Hardware Company, one of the most prominent mercantile firms in the City. As of 1916 this company was located at 212-216 South Pruett. Robert W. Meriwether was president of the company at this time. Robert W. and his wife, Kate, lived at 305 South Third during this period. A personal item regarding the Meriwether family was carried in the Aug. 2, 1922 issue of the Paragould Soliphone. This item indicated that Robert W. Meriwether and his son, William, had attended the annual family reunion held at Dunbar Cave near Clarkeville, Tennessee. Captain W. W. Meriwether died in 1893 and was buried at Linwood Cemetery. His wife, Sarah E., died in 1897 and was buried at the same place. A number of other members of the Meriwether families are buried at the Linwood Cemetery Mausoleum. MICHAEL William A Michael was born in Indiana in 1850. His wife, Sarah A, was born in Ohio in 1853. In 1880 the family was living in John Q. Adams Township in Warren County, Indiana Their children at this time were: Loima D. (a daughter), 1872; George W., 1875; and Thomas M., 1877. By 1900 the Michael family had moved to Greene County and settled in Ozark Township. By this time one more child had been added to the household This was a daughter named Dicy L, born in 1883. In 1916 William A and Sarah Michael were living at 714 South Third In Paragould. Miss Inatha Michael was living with them. William was employed at the Pekin Cooperage Company located at East Junction (now Kings highway) and Second Street. Sarah Michael, wife of William, is buried at the Linwood Cemetery in Paragould and her marker shows dates of 1853 and 1918. MILLER I James J. Miller was born in Tennessee in 1811. His wife, Elizabeth, was born in the same state in 1812. In 1850 this family was living in Dunklin County, Missouri. The name of their oldest child is not clear in the census record; however, the other children in the family were: Caroline,1833; Jeremiah, 1836; William, 1837; Venisa 1838; Polly, 1839; Sarah,1840; Mary, 1843; Amanda, 1844; Tempy, 1847; Andrew, 1847; and Elizabeth, 1849. The three younger children were born in Missouri, but all the other children were born in Tennessee. Brackets by the names of Tempy and Andrew, in the census record, appear to indicate that these two children were twins. By 1860 the Miller family had moved to Greene County and settled in Concord Township. By this latter date three more children had been added to the household: James H., 1852; John 1, 1855; and Henry, 1858. These three children were born in Arkansas. The 1860 census record lists James J. Millers occupation as "Baptist Clergyman". MILLER II Peter Miller (Mueller was born in Hanover, Germany in 1845. His wife, Anne, was born in Missouri in 1850. In 1880 this family was living in Boeuf Township in Franklin County, Missouri and their children were: Charles; 1872; Theodore, 1874; Gustave, 1877; and Lafayette, 1879. All the children were born in Missouri. By 1900 the Miller family had moved to Greene County and settled in Union Township. By this date one more child, Willie, had been added to the household. Willie was born in Missouri in 1885. MITCHELL Randle L. Mitchell Sr. was born in Tennessee in 1853. His wife, Clarah, was born in Mississippi in 1863. In 1900 this family was living in the tenth civil district of Crockett County, Tennessee and their children were: Conley, 1889; Randle L. Jr., 1893; and Lenola, 1895. A daughter born in 1890 was also a member of the household, but her name is not clear in the census record. Reuben Mitchell and his wife, Lula, lived next to this family. Reuben and Lula Mitchell were born in Tennessee in 1878 and 1879 respectively. It is suspected that Reuben may have been an older son of Randle L Mitchell Sr. By 1916 the Mitchell family had moved to Greene County and settled in Paragould. They lived at 627 East Poplar in the City at this time. Miss Olive Mitchell, a teacher at the West Side School, lived at the same address. Randle L. Mitchell Jr. established the Mitchell Funeral Home sometime during the 1920's. This establishment was located at 118 North Pruett in Paragould for many years. More recently the Home moved to Highway 25 West. As of 1939 Randle Mitchell Jr. and his wife, Lucy, lived at 200 South Fourteenth in Paragould. Ralph W. and Richard Mitchell lived at the same address. Randle L. Mitchell Sr. died in 1928 and was buried at the Linwood Cemetery. His marker shows that he was born on Dec.7, 1852. The marker for Clarah Sloan Mitchell bears dates of 1857 and 1944. Randle L. Mitchell Jr. died in 1974 and was also buried at Linwood. His marker shows that he was born on Dec.30, 1893. Conley Mitchell died in 1925 and is buried next to his parents. Three generations of the Mitchell family have shared in the management of the Mitchell Funeral Home. Richard Mitchell, son of Randle L. Mitchell Jr., is now the head of the establishment. MOORE John B. Moore was born in Illinois in 1847. His wife, Martha L., was born in Tennessee in 1849. In 1880 this family was living in Lasater Precinct in Hamilton County, Illinois. Their children at this time were: John P., 1866; Sarah M.,1871; J.H. (a son), 1873; J. D. (a son), 1874; and Charles L,1877. In 1900 the John B. Moore family was living in Clark Township in Greene County. By this time two more children had been added to the household: Dora E., 1887; and Emory L,1889. Both children were born in Illinois. ' MORGAN James Morgan was born in about 1845. His birthplace is not known with certainty. The 1880 census lists his place of birth as Tennessee while the 1900 census indicates that he was a native of Mississippi. His wife, Mary J., was born in Tennessee in 1855. In 1880 the Morgan family was living in Sevier County, Tennessee and their children were: John,1871; Jeremiah, 1873; Andrew A, 1876; and Malissa, 1879. By 1900 the Morgan family had moved to Greene County and settled in Main Shore Township. Four more children had been added to the household: Albert G.,1884; Jessie (a son),1888; Frank, 1892; and Rosa J., 1894. Albert and Jessie were born in Tennessee, but Frank and Rosa were born in Arkansas. John B. Morgan was still living with his parents at this time. MURDOCK John P. Murdock was born in Georgia in about 1838. His wife, Mary Adaline, was born in Alabama in 1840. In 1880 this family was living in Prairie County, Arkansas in or near the town of Hickory Plains. Their children at this time were: William T., 1862; John F.,1868; Fannie E., 1873; James R,1875; Barbara,1877; and Thomas P., 1879. All these children were born in Arkansas. By 1900 the Murdock family had moved to Greene County and settled in Crowley Township. Thomas P. Murdock was still living with his parents at this time. Bessie Clark, niece of John D., was also a member of the household. Bessie was born in Indiana in 1881. James R Murdock son of John D., and his wife, Arizona, were living next to the family. Arizona was born in Arkansas in 1878. Ora Clark, cousin of James R Murdock was a member of the second Murdock household. Ora was born in Indiana in 1887. Mary Adaline Murdock is buried at the Beech Grove Cemetery in western Greene County. Her marker bears dates of 1840 and 1912. MURPHY Robert E. Murphy was born in Tennessee in 1840. His wife, Mary, was born in the same state in 1849. In 1880 the family was living in Fulton County, Kentucky and their children were: Fannie, 1867; Mary, 1868; Nancy, 1874; Robert, 1878; and George, 1880. All these children were born in Kentucky. In 1900 the Murphy family was living in Clark Township in Green County, Arkansas. By this date six more children had been added to the Murphy household: Etta M., 1883; Clarence, 1885; Clifford, 1891; Anna L, 1896; Thomas R, 1898; and Erin B., 1900. Erin was born in Arkansas but all the other children were born in Kentucky. George F. Murphy was still living with his parents in 1900. In 1916 George F. Murphy and his wife, Emily A., were living at 617 East Poplar in Paragould. He was an employee of the Iron Mountain Railroad at this time. NEWBERRY I The reader is referred to the Newberry sketch in Volume I of this book Since that sketch was written, it has been found that John and Nancy Newberry were living in Cherokee County, Alabama in 1850. Their children at that time were: James, 1843; Martha, 1845; and William, 1850. As stated in the original sketch the family moved to Greene County and settled in Salem Township during the 1850's. In 1850 two other Newberry families were living very near John and Nancy Newberry in Cherokee County, Alabama. These were (1) Isaac and Jane Newberry, born in North Carolina and Georgia in 1825 and 1824 respectively and (2) James and Nancy Newberry, born in North Carolina in 1797 and 1805 respectively. It is suspected that Isaac was the brother of John Newberry. It is also believed that James and Nancy Newberry may have been the parents of John and Isaac The interested reader may research these Newberry lines further by referring to family numbers 892,895, and 898 in the 1850 census record of Cherokee County, Alabama. NEWBERRY II The reader is referred to the Newberry sketch in Volume l of this book Since that sketch was written some new information regarding the Sam and Nancy Newberry family has been found. In 1850 this family was living in Weakley County, Tennessee. The family may be located in the 1850 census record by referring to page 729, family number eight, Weakley County. The name, Samuel, has been abbreviated with the letter, S., and this letter has been mix-translated as "L" in the 1850 census index by Byron Sistler and Associates. NICHOLS Peter Nichols was born in Tennessee in about 1810. The county of his birth is not known. However, he was one of the very early settlers of Greene County, having arrived sometime prior to 1840. In 1850 Peter and his wife, Susan, were living in Bradshaw Township and their children were: James, 1833; John 1835; William, 1847; George, 1840; Benjamin, 1842; Andrew, 1844; Roberta, 1848; and Sarah, 1849. In 1860 the Nichols family was still living in Bradshaw Township and by this latter date three more children had been added to the household: Thomas, 1853; George, 1856; and Catherine, 1858. NIXON John Nixon was born in Georgia in about 1811. The county of his birth is not known. However, he was one of the early settlers of Greene County, having arrived sometime prior to 1850. In 1850 John and his wife, Sarah, were living in Big Creek Township and at this time they had only one child, Francis, born in 1848. In 1860 John and Sarah Nixon were living in St Francis Township and by this latter date four more children had been added to the household: Mary L.,1851; James E., 1853; William W., 1855; and Minerva 1,1860. All of these children were born in Arkansas. In 1870 John and Sarah Nixon were still residents of St. Francis Township and by this date three more children had been added to the family: Charles R, 1865; Anna Lee, 1868; and Joseph C., 1870. James E Nixon, son of John, married Martha Holt in Greene County on Feb. 18, 1879. Martha was twenty-one years of age at the time. Some persons bearing the name of Nixon are buried at the Woods Chapel Cemetery in southern Greene County. PARKER T. K. Parker was born in Tennessee in 1826. His wife, Permelia A, was born in the same state in 1827. In 1850 this family was living in Hardeman County, Tennessee and at this time they had only one child, Sarah J. I., born in 1848. By 1860 the Parker family had moved to Greene County and settled in St. Francis Township. By this date two more children had been added to the household: Mary E., 1853; and Margaret C., 1858. 'Both children were born in Tennessee. In 1850 three other Parker families were living very near T.K and Permelia A. Parker in Hardeman County, Tennessee. The reader may wish to refer to family numbers 827, 829, and 830 in the 1850 census for Hardeman County in order to make a more thorough study of these families. PARRISH Jordan Parrish was born in North Carolina in 1803. H is wife, Elizabeth, was born in the same state in 1804. In 1850 Jordan and Elizabeth were living in McNairy County, Tennessee and their children still at home were: Sarah, 1830; Spencer, 1832; Mary, 1834; Jesse, 1838; Margaret, 1839; Ann, 1841; John, 1844; and James, 1848. By 1860 the Parrish family had moved to Greene County and settled in Concord Township. No new children had been born in the family during the decade of the 1850's. Spencer Parrish, son of Jordan, married a woman named Nancy A. while still in Tennessee. In 1860 this family was living in Concord Township and their children were: Christina, 1853; James, 1855; and Malinda, 1859. By 1870 the family was living in Johnson Township and by this latter date three more children had been added to the household: Andrew H., 1862; Dora E., 1865; and William l, 1867. Spencer's brother, James, was also living with the family at this time. PERRYMAN I A. G. Perryman was born in Tennessee in 1815. His wife, Susan, was born in Alabama in 1825. In 1850 this family was living in DeSoto County, Mississippi and at this time they had only one child, Muhulda, born in 1849; James Esley, born in Alabama in 1827, was also a member of the household. By 1860 the Perryman family had moved to Greene County and settled in Salem Township. By this latter date four more children had been added to the household: David l, 1850; John M., 1852; Minerva A, 1854; and Henderson B., 1857. Henderson was born in Arkansas, but all the other children were born in Alabama. A B. Laughter, born in Mississippi in 1830, was also a member of the household. PERRYMAN II Felix G. Perryman was born in Tennessee in 1813. His wife, Angeline, was born in the same state in 1829. I n 1850 the family was living in DeSoto County, Mississippi and at this time they had only one child, Elizabeth, born in Mississippi in 1849. By 1860 the Perryman family had moved to Greene County and settled in Salem Township next to the AG. Perryman family. For this reason, it seems likely that Felix and A. G. Perryman were brothers. By 1860 five more children had been added to the household of Felix Perryman: Martin L., 1851; Louis R., 1853; Susan J., 1854; David A, 1856; and Thomas M., 1859. Martin and Louis were born in Mississippi, but all the younger children were born in Arkansas. POLLARD I John M. Pollard was born in North Carolina in 1820. His wife, Mariah, was born in Illinois in 1818. In 1850 this family was living in Union County, Illinois and their children were: Jeremiah, 1840;Thomas, 1841; Eliza, 1844; William, 1848; and John, 1850. All the children were born in Illinois. In 1850 the John M. Pollard family was living very near the William Laws family in Union County, Illinois (see LAWS, Vol. 111). By 1860 the Pollard family had moved to Greene County and settled in Bradshaw Township. By this latter date three more children had been added to the household: M.M. (a daughter,, 1852; Elizabeth, 1856; and Rachel, 1859. Elizabeth and Rachel were born in Arkansas, but all the older children were born in Illinois. John M. Pollard is buried at the New Hope Cemetery near the town of Pollard in Clay County, Arkansas. POLLARD II William Pollard was born in North Carolina in 1823. His wife, Anna, was born in the same state in 1825. In 1850 this family was living in Union County, Illinois and their children were: Sarah, 1842; Martha, 1844; Elizabeth, 1846; Jackson, 1848; and Adaline, 1850. Jackson and Adaline were born in Illinois, but the older children were born in Tennessee. By 1860 the Pollard family had moved to Greene County and settled in Bradshaw Township. By this latter date three more children had been added to the household: M. N. (a daughter), 1852; Margaret A., 1854; and Mary A., 1859. M. N. was born in Illinois, but Margaret and Mary were born after the family arrived in Arkansas. William Pollard is buried at the New Hope Cemetery near the town of Pollard in Clay County, Arkansas. POWELL Allen F. Powell was born in Tennessee in about 1837. His wife, Mary E., was born in Arkansas in 1848. In 1880 this family was living in Big Creek Township in Craighead County, Arkansas and at this time they had only one child, Lou R., born in 1874. Elizabeth and Bell K. Goodman, born in Arkansas in 1865 and 1866 respectively, were also members of the household. By 1900 the Powell family had moved to Greene County and settled in Salem Township. Evidently Mary E. Powell had died and Allen F. had married a woman named Aner E., born in Tennessee in 1840. Stanford H. and Gus H. Powell were members of the household. Stanford and Gus were born in Arkansas in 1877 and 1884 respectively. In 1916 Gus H. Powell and his wife, Fannie, were living at 1014 West Emerson in Paragould. Gus was County Court Clerk at that time. PRICE I Caswell Price was born in Alabama in 1825. His wife, Mary A. (folly), was born in the same state in 1834. In 1850 this family was living in Lauderdale County, Alabama and they had no children at the time. During the 1850's the Price family moved to Greene County and settled in Cache Township. In 1860 their children were: Martha E., 1851; David M., 1852; Rachel A, 1854; and John C., 1859. John was born in Tennessee, but all the other children were born in Alabama. PRICE II Elihu Price was born in Kentucky in 1848. His wife, Mary A., was born in the same state in the same year. In 1880 this family was living in Webster County, Kentucky in or near the village of Clayville (now Clay). Their children at this time were: Sarah E., 1870; Martha, 1872; Lucy T., 1874; Lley (Lla) L. (a son), 1876; and Vena, 1878. All the children were born in Kentucky. By 1900 the Price family had moved to Greene County and settled in Spring Grove Township. By this time two more children had been added to the household: Anna K., 1885; and Benjamin A, 1889. Both children were born in Kentucky. In 1900 Lley L. Price and his wife, Emmer, were living next to the Elihu Price family in Spring Grove Township. Emmer (Emma?) was born in Kentucky in 1880. Anna K. Price married James Allen (Al) Grooms (see GROOMS, Vol. I). Both are buried at the Center Hill Cemetery. Elihu and Mary A. Price are also buried at Center Hill. PROVINCE I William H. Province was born in Kentucky in 1806. The name of his wife is not known. In 1850 William was living in Carroll County, Tennessee and his known children were: Robert,1841; Mary, 1843; and William, 1848. Mary E. and Elizabeth L. Harris were also members of his household. Mary E. and Elizabeth were born in Tennessee in 1831 and 1828 respectively. By 1860 the Province family had moved to Greene County and settled in Chalk Bluff Township. B, this time William had re-married and three more children had been added to the household: Lydia, 1851; Abner-, 1855; and Nancy E., 1856. Rebecca Province, born in Kentucky in 1800, was also a member of the household. Her relation to William Province is not definitely known. In1850anotherProvincefamilywaslivingnearWilliam H. Province in Carroll County, Tennessee. This was the family of John and Rebecca Province, born in Kentucky in 1795 and 1793 respectively PROVINCE II . L.C. Province was born in Kentucky in 1810. His wife, Alley J., was born in Tennessee in 1823. In 1850 this family was living in Carroll County, Tennessee and at this time they had only one child, Ann, born in Tennessee in 1848. Luckey Hancock, born in Tennessee in 1825, was also a member of the household. Luckeys occupation is listed, in the census record, as "clerking". By 1860 the Province family had moved to Greene County and settled in Union Township. By this latter date several children had been added to the household: William A, 1851; J.B. (a son), 1853; R.B. (a daughter), 1855; and E. L. (a son), 1859. All the children were born in Tennessee. Thomas Elsberry, born in Tennessee in 1825, was also a member of the household. In 1870 L.C. Province and his family were living in Concord Township. By this latter date two more children had been added to the household: Harriet and Ala P., daughters born in 1862. QUINN William R. Quinn was born in Georgia in about 1845. His wife, Amanda M., was born in Alabama in 1849. In 1880 this family was living in Big Creek Township in Craighead County, Arkansas. Their children at this time were: James B.,1874; William F., 1875; and Nancy A., 1879. By 1900 the Quinn family had moved to Greene County and settled in Salem Township. By this date four more children had been added to the household: Charles, 1884; Libba A, 1885; Jefferson, 1888; and Nettie A., 1893. William R. Quinn is buried at the Pleasant Hill Cemetery in western Greene County and his marker shows dates of 1845 and 1917. His daughter, Nancy A., is buried nearby and her stone bears dates of 1879 and 1898.
