As yet, we have not discovered which Grounds male is his father or who his mother is. He is possibly the son of Peter Grounds Jr. who is shown to have come to Mo. with with one son and four daughters in 1800 and we believe that son David was not born until after their arrival in Mo. He signed a petition as an adult along with Jacob, Peter, and George Grund in 1806 that was a part of the Carter's Territorial papers of Missouri. He filed a claim for 300 arpens of land on 1 Nov 1811 with the Board of Land Commissioners of Missouri. This land was situated in Cape Girardeau, Mo. It was the opinion of the board that the claim not be confirmed. He married Barbara Gross the daughter of Christian and Susannah Gross around 1814. He left Missouri around 1819 and appears on the 1830, 1840, and 1850 Hempstead County Census. Family history says that he died from being kicked by a mule. He died July 6, 1871. His last Will and Testament is filed in Will Book C- Hempstead County, Arkansas and reads as follows: In the name of God, Amen. I, Daniel Grounds of the County of Hempstead in the State of Arkansas, Being of sound mind and memory, and considering the uncertainty of life in this world, do therefore make ordain, publish, and declare this to be my last will and testament: That is to say, first, after all my lawful debts are paid and discharged the residue of my Estate, real and personal, I give and bequeath unto my daughter, Frances,(the south west quarter of the southwest quarter of section eight, in township twelve south, of range twenty seven west, also give 3 cows and calves, also household and kitchen furniture: I give unto her all the above mentioned property forever. All the rest of my property, real and personal, I desire to be equal divided among all my children, my daughter Francis not excepted, I want my son John Grounds to wind up my business according to my last will and testament, after my decease. In testimony whereof, I have hereunto subscribed my name and affixed my seal, this the 11th day of November, 1870. Bland, daughter of Rev. Preston Bland. In Goodspeed's History of Arkansas, is a biography of Daniel J. Grounds. It says-- Daniel J. Grounds, farmer, Saratoga, Ark. Prominent among the comparatively young men of Howard County, whose careers thus far have been both honorable and successful, is the subject of this sketch. His father, John Grounds, was a native of Missouri, as was also the mother, whose maiden name was Talitha Draper. The parents came to Arkansas at an early day, settled in Hempstead County, and there took an active interest in schools, churches, and in fact all enterprises for the public good. The father was a Democarat and very active in political affairs, but would accept no official position. He was a farmer and large land owner. His death occurred in 1881, at the age of fifty-eight years. The mother died in 1852, at the age of thirty years. Daniel J. Grounds was reared in this locality, and his youthful days were passed in assisting on the farm and in attending the common schools, where he received a limited education. His sympathies were with the Southern States during the late unpleasantness and in 1861 he enlisted in Company E, Fourth Arkansas Regiment, under Capt. Kyle, and served in this regiment until the close of the war. He was in the battle of Elkhorn, Farmington, Chickamanga, Murfreesboro, Resaca, and was wounded in the shoulder at the latter place. This kept him off duty for three months. After recovering, he rejoined his command at Atlanta, Ga., and was in numerous battles after this, and was several times slightly wounded. After the war he returned to his home in Arkansas, engaged in farming and bought land in 1870. Since that time he has owned several farms, and at present has 160 acres with 100 acres under cultivation. He is also a member of the mercantile firm of Maddox & Co. Mr. Grounds was married in 1868 to Miss Fannie J Blan, a native of Arkansas, and the daughter of Rev. Preston Blan, one of the early settlers of this section. To this union have been born four children, three now living: James T., Mary T., and Willie P. Mary T. was married in 1887 to Mr. E. J. Taylor, a successful farmer of Howard County. The other two children are at Home. Mr. Grounds is a Democrat in politics, and was elected justice of the peace in 1888. Mrs. Grounds and daughters are members of the Methodist Episcopal Church. 1-1-1) James Thomas Grounds b. 10 Jul 1869 m. Sara Alice Newman on 24 Dec 1894. He died on 10 Feb 1936. There is a romantic story about one Uncle Davey Grounds when first came to this state and homesteaded his place. It is alleged that Uncle Davey fell in love with an Indian girl, but due to tribal prejudice he was unable to get her. When President Jackson was moving all the Indians out to the Indian Territory Uncle Davey stole his Indian sweetheart and married her when her tribe left. After the tribe had gone to the Territory, some of her people returned and hunted for the girl, but Uncle Davey was too slick for them- and they returned empty-handed.(newspaper article from the Washington historical society in Arkansas.) 3) George Washington Grounds b. 1818 4) Frances "Fannie" Grounds b 4 Sep,1819 d 11 Dec 1884 in Saratoga, Arkansas. In the area where Thomas Jefferson lived returning Confederate soldiers had banded together under the leadership of Capt. Bob Lee for protection against harassment from Northern sympathizers. This controversy became known as the Lee Peacock Feud. Federal soldiers were called in to keep the peace and eventually ambushed Bob Lee as he was trying to flee to Mexico. Also, even though Thomas Jefferson refers to Solomon as his uncle, we know that Solomon was son of John Grund and Daniel is not listed anywhere in the settlement of John's estate.
