DAVIS CEMETERY, HOWARD COUNTY, ARKANSAS Davis Cemetery is located four to five miles south of Umpire in the north end of Howard County, Arkansas near the west bank of the Saline River near the old Rough Edge community. It is situated on approximately two acres of land which was owned by Clement Sherrill Davis (his is the oldest marked grave in the cemetery), who obtained the original land patent. In 1916 the land was officially deeded by F. B. H. Davis and his wife Lualice Delona (Lonia) Miller Davis to the Methodist Protestant Church. The church is no longer standing and the cemetery has expanded on the site. The cemetery is currently situated in the midst of land owned by the Weyerhaeuser Timber Company (F.B.H. Davis sold the property in 1922 to the Dierks Lumber and Coal Company when he moved to Murfreesboro, Pike County, Arkansas). The cemetery is well-kept but is not easily located. If you are not familiar with this vicinity, ask for directions from the Umpire area residents. In the center of the cemetery, between the grave stones of Clement S. Davis and Mary S. Davis, there are seven unmarked graves which were once piled about three feet high with very large creek rocks which had been worn smooth by the elements. Older relatives (now deceased) related to me that these unmarked graves were the "children and grandchildren, of Clement S. and Mary Safronia Hancock Davis, who died in the early 1840's from influenza. After grandpa died grandma wanted to get them as close to grandpa as she could, then when she died they had to bury her across the graveyard from grandpa because there wasn't any room next to him". These rocks have since been removed to allow for easier grounds maintenance of the cemetery. A Decoration Day is held on the fourth Sunday in August of each year with church services held under a shelter erected on the site. This cemetery was enumerated on June 10, 1972 by Nick and Judy Davis (jdavis@exp.net). Personal notes of reference are added where known. Please note that every effort has been made for accuracy, but mistakes do happen.
