John W. Cullins and Mary A. Sims. He also went by the names of J. S. and "Cass" which is believed to have been a nickname. His middle name is his grandmother's maiden name. He had one other sibling by these parents named William Sims Cullins who was born in 1855 also in Tennessee. He had six other half brothers and sisters by different mothers. By the mother named Mary A. Stark, three half- brothers Henry Neill Cullins, James A. Cullins and Francis Cullins and one-half sister Estella Cullins. By the mother Martha M. Flinn, two half-sisters Theodora and Ida Cullins. John S. Cullins made his home in Greenbriar Twp., Independence Co., Arkansas with his parents when they moved to the area. On 2 Apr 1856, his mother Mary A. (Sims) Cullins died and was born in Independence Co., Arkansas. John's father was a prominent farmer and stock raiser of Greenbriar Twp., Independence Co., purchased his present farm of 320 acres, which is situated near Jamestown, in 1855; there was at that time little improvement on the land, which is now one of the best farms in the county. He devoted his entire attention to farming until 1867, when he built a store on the present site of Jamestown, and for twelve years engaged in merchandising in partnership with Jacob Pate. Capt. John W. Cullins accumulated considerable property, owning in all 540 acres, about 220 acres of which are under cultivation, beside real estate in Jamestown. During the Civil War Capt. John W. Cullins served about four years in the Confederate Army; the first year as captain of Company C, Desha's battalion, operating in Alabama and Mississippi, and subsequently assisted in organizing Company C, Arkansas Calvary, of which he was appointed captain, in which capacity he served until the close of the struggle. He was in the battles of Marks' Hill, Big Blue, with Gen. Price on his raid through Missouri and Kansas, surrendering at Jacksonport in June, 1865, after four years of the hardships of war. Cullins married Alice J. Elms on 15 Oct 1874 in Independence Co., Arkansas. Their marriage record is listed in Independence Co., AR Marriages 1826-1877, Book A thru D, John S. CULLINS, about 22, to Allis J. ELMS, about 19, 15 Oct 1874 by B. Lee E., Methodist Episcopal Church of the South, D-193. Alice was born Feb 1857 in Arkansas to the parents of Hadden F. Elms and Lucy Tillman or Thurman. John S. Cullins and wife Alice J. (Elms) Cullins was found on the 1880 Census, Independence Co., AR (LDS file: Ed 125, Vol 6, Sheet 7, Line 23), J. S. "Cass" Cullins, 25 yrs, b: TN, Father b: SC, Mother b: SC Occupation: Farmer, Wife, Alice Cullins, 24 yrs; Children: Ida M. Cullins, 2 years, Dany L. Cullins, 1 year. John S. Cullins and Alice J. (Elms) Cullins had 13 children as quoted from the book of "ELMS FAMILY HISTORY by Charles W. Hutchinson, page 25" and we have identified nine of those children. Following are the names and dates they were born with any other information we know about them. 1) Ida Maud Cullins born 5 July 1877 in Independence Co., AR who married Andrew Jackson Kirkpatrick on 16 Jun 1894 in Jamestown, Independence Co., AR and moved to Wetumka, Hughes Co., OK. Maud had five children from her first husband. After the death of her first husband she married second husband Marcus Berry Bowden on 22 Dec 1907 in Wetumka, Hughes Co., OK. To this union four children were born. Maud died on 24 Sep 1950 in Wetumka, Hughes Co., OK. 2) Dany L. Cullins born about 1878 in Independence Co., AR. 3) C. L. "Vig" Cullins born 1 Feb 1879 in Independence Co., AR and died 14 Jun 1948 in Jamestown, Independence Co., AR. He is buried Alderbrook Cemetery, Greenbrier Twp., Independence Co., AR. 4) David Boyce Cullins, 5) Robert Elms Cullins, Occupation: Meatcutter in Newport, AR in the early 1930's, 6) John Cullins 7) Joe Cullins 8) Roy Cullins 9) Sarah Emma Cullins who married Unknown Lovell. J. S. Cullins was listed in the 1890 Personal Property Tax Assessment List for Independence Co., AR (Britton - Farris), page 17, falling under the 65th School District and amount assessed value at $360.00. In 1899, John S. Cullins was listed as one of the heirs in his fathers probate records and living in Jamestown, Independence Co., Arkansas. John S. Cullins died 27 Feb 1918 in Jamestown, Independence Co., AR and buried at buried Greenbrier Twp. Cemetery, Independence Co., Arkansas. His wife Alice died 6 Dec 1930 and also buried Greenbrier Twp.
