Independence County, AR-Oaklawn Cemetery Batesville, AR Submitted by: Cindy Treadway- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- OAKLAWN CEMETERY Oaklawn Cemetery is probably the largest cemetery in Independence County. I transcribed over 7,000 names and there are still some graves that are no longer marked or their markers are no longer legible. Oaklawn Cemetery can be found in Batesville. Turn South onto Sidney Street from Harrison Street (Hwy 69) at the traffic light at this intersection. The entrance to Oaklawn can be seen when you make the turn. The paved roads, which many of the townspeople use as a track to keep in shape by walking, are all labeled. Those running east and west with numbers, except for the last one which is labeled South Loop; those running north and south with letters. I've put the entire inventory in alphabetical order, but for those who might want to visit and find the stones, I numbered the sections created by the roads and put the appropriate number next to each name. The sections are as follows: Section 1 is wedged shaped rather than rectangular-it is bounded by Sidney Street, 2, and B. Section 2-bounded by B, 1, C, 2 Section 3-bounded by C, 1, D, 2 Section 4-bounded by D, 1, E, 2 Section 5-bounded by E, 1, F, 2 Section 6-bounded by F, 1, G, 2 Section 7-bounded by G, 1, H, 2 Section 8-bounded by H, 1, I, 2 Section 9-bounded by I, 1, J, 2 Section 10-bounded by J, 1, the road that runs around the east side of the cemetery to Myers Street, and 2 Section 11-these are the graves in the small grassy space on the other side of the road that runs around the east side of the cemetery to Myers Street Section 12-bounded by H, 2, I, 3 Section 13-bounded by G, 2, H, 3 Section 14-bounded by F, 2, G, 3 Section 15-bounded by E, 2, F, 3 Section 16-bounded by D, 2, F, a small road is not labelled, but runs from road E to road C at the end of section 16 and 18 Section 17-bounded by C, the same small road that is not labelled, 2, D Section 18-bounded by C, the same small road that is not labelled, E, 3 Section 19-bounded by B, 2, C, 3 Section 20-bounded by A, 2, B, 3 Section 21-bounded by Sidney St., 2, A, 3 Section 22-bounded by Sidney St., 3, A, 4 Section 23-bounded by A, 3, B, 4 Section 24-bounded by B, 3, C, 4 Section 25-bounded by C, 3, D, 4 Section 26-bounded by D, 3, E, 4 Section 27-these are the graves between road 4 and Myers Street Section 28-bounded by E, 3, F, South Loop Section 29-bounded by F, 3, G, South Loop Section 30-bounded by G, 3, H, South Loop Section 32-bounded by H, 3, I, South Loop Since there are so many names, I've divided them up and will add them as I get them arranged and typed. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- USGENWEB NOTICE: In keeping with our policy of providing free information on the Internet, data may be used by non-commercial entities, as long as this message remains on all copied material.
