"Last week the Tuckerman Record picked up an article from the Stream of History, the publication of the Jackson County Historical Society, on the cemeteries of Jackson county. One listing drew discussion from various sources. In Range 3, Township 13, Section 34, a cemetery was listed by the committee from the historical society as "Salem." Its location is the NW corner, NE NE. A footnote says this was identified in the report as "Elgin (Negro) Cemetery." A number of white families have reported to the Tuckerman Record that they, too, have been burying at Salem for many years. The cemetery is located west of the Waters' Store. After discussing the matter with a number of citizens, it appears that both white and Negro burials were made in the cemetery. The Record would be pleased to publish any information presented to it concerning Salem cemetery (or Elgin). Mrs. Ralph McDonald, Sr. of Weldon was chairman of the historical society's committee which made the inventory of the cemeteries and much of the work was done by James Morgan of Newport, a former employee of the Tuckerman Record."
