"Bucky" Hendrix Hendrix Will Be Remembered For His Devotion to Scouting By Kimberly Seamon of the COMMERClAL staff Everyone has some quality others remember. For some, it's their looks, And for others it's their attitude. But for Bucky Hendrix, it was His devotion to Boy Scouts of America that most recall. Arthur C. "Bucky" Hendrix, 61, of Pine Bluff, died April 8, 1998, at Trinity Medical Center. For family members who knew him best, Boy Scouts was his life. "He just dedicated all of his time and all of his resources to scouting," Gene Hendrix, Bucky Hendrix's brother, said. Bucky Hendrix, who was a scout master and teacher for more than 40 years, influenced a lot of people. He still received cards and letters from several people he helped over the years, W.R. "Dick" Hendrix, another brother, said. But it wasn't until he was an adult that he got involved in the organization. Bucky Hendrix, who was born on May 16, 1936, at Pine Bluff, a son of the late Robert Vernon and Flossie White Hendrix, never had time when he was young to join the club, a Pine Bluff Commercial article said. He had many jobs, including a paper route for The Commercia[, that occupied his time. It was when he was 19 that he first got involved in the organization. The article said a friend organized a troop at what was then the Arkansas Boys Industrial School. When the friend dropped out, Bucky Hendrix took over And was the leader for 21 years. From that point on, he was hooked. "I think that scouting is probably the finest youth program for young people today," he said in the article. "It gives them an opportunity to participate in an outdoor program with the camping and the hiking and lets them set a goal and accomplish this goal at their own pace." Over the years, Bucky Hendrix was a scout master at several places, including the Arkansas School for the Deaf and at St. Joseph's Orphanage, both at Little Rock, and at Troop 800 at St. Luke's United Methodist Church. Besides being a scout master, he was also a member of the Order of the Arrow Society of BSA, served on the High Adventure Committee of the Quapaw Council and was the head of the local Eagle Scout Board of Review for 30 years. All of Bucky Hendrix's work did not go unnoticed. He received the Silver Beaver Award from the BSA Quapaw Council and received the Award of Merit from the BSA Saracen Council. He received the St. George Award by the Catholic Diocese of Little Rock, and he also received a human life saving award from Liberty Mutual Life Insurance Company in 1956. Besides Boy Scouts, Bucky Hendrix was involved in other areas. He worked for the Jefferson County Juvenile Court for many years and continued his education. A graduate of Pine Bluff High School, he later attended the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. After he returned to the university, he joined Arkansas State Pollution Control and Ecology, where he worked for several years. He lived at Springdale and Little Rock. He eventually returned to Pine Bluff and became a project chemist For Gaylord Corporation, known as Weyerhauser then, at its Pine Bluff paper mill. He retired from that in October 1996. He was a member of First Baptist Church, but he didn't stop there. Bucky Hendrix also taught Sunday School at Trinity Village for many years. Survivors include three brothers, W.R. "Dick" Hendrix and Jack Hendrix, both of Pine B!uff, and Gene Hendrix of Conway; and two sisters, Jane Dean of Salinas, California and Bobbye Maples of Pine Bluff.
