While in California he was employed as a truck driver for Sierra Pacific Industry, formerly employed in landscaping and in explosives at Sierra Army Depot for five years, and was a member of the Arkansas Express and Tennessee Whisky bands. He was a son of the late Pauline Woolsey and the late Noah L. Tong. As a Clarksville resident he was employed as a truck driver and supervisor and was a member of the Knee Deep, Alix, and Wild Country bands. Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Norma Tong; three daughters, Paula Eakins of Herlong, Calif., and Mistie Tong and Kristie Tong, both of the home; four sons, Mike Tong of San Marcos, Texas, Wayne Tong of Herlong, Calif., Noah Tong of Doyle, Calif., and Jason Tong of the home; two sisters, JoAnn Griffith and Helen Gipson, both of Clarksville; one brother, Jimmy Tong of Clarksville; and 11 grandchildren. Funeral was Saturday, Oct. 3, in Doyle, Calif. The body was cremated. A memorial service will be held at the Kendall Cemetery near Hartman at a later date. ====================================================================== Harry Ray Walters, 79, of Pearcy died Friday, Oct. 2, 1998. He was an elder at Lamar Church of Christ, deacon at Hazel Street Church of Christ in Hot Springs, member of Richard Street Church of Christ, native of Alikchi, Okla., son of the late B. F. (Buck) and Amanda Walters, served in the United States Navy, and a retired employee of Arkansas Nuclear One. Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Sarah Imojean Walters; one son and daughter-in-law, Harrel and Tammy Walters of London; one daughter and son-in-law, Brenda and Ron Austin of Pearcy; two sisters, Juanita Phillips of Hot Springs and Virgie Green of Azle, Texas; grandchildren, Jennifer and Jason Williams, Ronda Austin, Scotty Walters and Alicia Walters; and great-granddaughter, Kristen Williams. Funeral was at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 6, at Richard Street Church of Christ with Jack Smith officiating followed by graveside services and burial at 3 p.m. at Point Look Out Cemetery at Bluffton. Skaggs, 88, of West Fork died Tuesday, Sept. 29, 1998, at Washington Regional Medical Center in Fayetteville. He was a former resident of Johnson County, son of the late LaFeyette and Joyce Hammonds Skaggs, preceded in death by his wife, Candy Margaret Skaggs, retired coal miner and wood carver, Baptist, and member of the Teamsters and Masonic Lodge. Survivors include one daughter, Syble Baker of West Fork; two sons, Orbon (Bill) Skaggs of Beach Park, Ill., and Leslie Skaggs of Combs; one brother, Arlie Skaggs of Rogers; 21 grandchildren; 48 great- grandchildren; 12 great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was a native of Johnson County, attended Lamar School, and was preceded in death by her husband, Jim McCarley, and son, Ricky McCarley. She was secretary at Woolly Hollow State Park and a member of Bethlehem Baptist Church. Survivors include her husband, Eldon Spears; two daughters, Tammy Spears Rowbotham and Melanie Spears Thomas, both of Greenbrier; father, John W. Killough of Mt. Grove, Mo.; mother, Corine Gayle Shaffer of Missouri; four brothers, Jack Killough of Plumerville, Mark Killough of Wichita, Kan., and Randy Shaffer and Darrell Shaffer, both of Missouri; one sister, Joy Killough Cash of Wichita, Kan.; and three grandchildren, Morgan Robertson and Tyler and Tara Thomas. He was a native of Hartman, son of the late Arther and Emma Barber Mays, member of Union Grove Baptist Church, and retired Tyson Foods employee. Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Margie Drewry Mays; one daughter, Judy Fowler of Clarksville; one son, Richard Mays of Hartman; one half sister, Cora Frazier of Alma; and five grandchildren, Jeremy Fowler of Russellville, Donna Epperson of Clarksville, and John Mays, Tara Mays, and Nathan Mays, all of Hartman. A native of Coal Hill, she was a daughter of the late John and Lillie Butts Jackson, widow of Truman Rickard, member of Parkhill Church of Christ and American Legion Auxiliary of Post No. 31, and a former saleswoman for Hunts. She was a native of Franklin County, daughter of the late Fred and Ora Williams Smith, widow of Eugene Gabbard, and attended the Assembly of God Church. She is survived by one daughter, Glenda Watson of Paris, two other sons, Carroll McNutt of Paris and Roy Gabbard of Booneville; one sister, Eula Huffman of Ratcliff; two brothers, Darrell Smith of Lawton, Okla., and Bill Smith of Ratcliff; 11 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Simms, 76, of Clarksville died Friday, Oct. 9, 1998, at Sparks Regional Medical Center in Fort Smith. A native of Coal Hill and daughter of the late Edward T. and Celia King Vardaman, she was a graduate of Coal Hill High School, and a member of the First Baptist Church and the PEO. Survivors include her husband, L. J. Simms; two sons, John Simms of North Attleboro, Mass., and Tommy Simms of Fort Smith; one sister, Lucille Martin of Paris; one brother, E. T. Vardaman of Little Rock; and four grandchildren, Grant Simms and Kelsey Simms, both of Fort Smith, and Chris Simms and Kyle Simms, both of Attleboro, Mass. He was a member of Clarksville Christian Church, Navy veteran, member and past master of the Masonic Lodge, retired from Lever Brothers Company in Whiting, Ind., son of the late John T. and Florence Saylor Barnett, and was preceded in death by his wife, Mrs. Luella Virginia Barnett. He is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Jack D. and Karyle Barnett of Clarksville; one sister-in-law, Doris Lambeth of Sullivan, Ind.; one brother, Roland Barnett of Equality, Ill.; one brother-in- law, Homer McKinley of Merom, Ind.; two grandchildren and spouses, Jacquline and Steve DeYoung of Lamar and Terry and John Schutz of Cedar Lake, Ind.; six great-grandchildren; and two great-great- grandchildren. She was a native of Coal Hill, daughter of the late Ideus and Mary Ethel Miller, widow of Floyd Quisenberry, former resident of Denning, member of the Angleton Grandmother's Club, and was preceded in death by one son, Gordon. She is survived by three sons, Tommy of Albuquerque, N. M., Pat of Angleton, Texas, and Mike of Lake Jackson, Texas; one sister, Christine Muldoon of Pico Riveria, Calif.; 14 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. (Kit) Carson, 67, of Sparkman, father of Terry Q. Carson of Clarksville, died Monday, Oct. 12, 1998, at Baptist Medical Center in Arkadelphia. He was a native of Mountainburg, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Q. (Mildred Satterfield) Carson Sr., 1949 graduate of Ozark High School, a retired chairman and president with Merchants and Planters Bank of Sparkman, and a former vice president with the bank of Oak Grove, La., and the Bank of Ozark. Other survivors include his widow, Mrs. Wilma Ruth Alston Carson; one daughter, Pamela Smith of El Dorado; one sister, Lu Nell Burnett of Springdale; and three grandchildren, Tab Smith, Brooke Smith, and Travis Collyar. East, 66, of La Puente, Calif., died Sept. 14, 1998, in Queen of Valley Hospital in West Covina, Calif. He was a former resident and son of the late William S. East of Clarksville. Tenney, 60, of Lamar died Tuesday, Oct. 6, 1998, at Johnson Regional Medical Center. She was a daughter of the late Jobe and Dovie Steele Tate and a Baptist. Local arrangements were under the direction of Roller-Cox Funeral Home. ====================================================================== Johnson County Graphic, Clarksville, Arkansas October 21, 1998 Martin Audley Scarborough Jr., 83, of Clarksville died Oct. 15, 1998, at M D Anderson Hospital in Houston, Texas. He was a son of the late Polly (Dunlap) and Martin Audley Scarborough Sr., graduate of Clarksville High School, The College of the Ozarks (now University of the Ozarks) and the St. Louis College of Pharmacy. During World War II he served in the United States Army Air Corps in Texas. He was in business with his father and brother at the Palace Drug Store until retirement in 1991. He was a lifelong member, elder and deacon of the First Presbyterian Church in Clarksville, a member of the Shrine, Arkansas Pharmaceutical Association and 52-year member of Franklin Masonic Lodge. He was preceded in death by his wife, Geraldine Hudson Scarborough. Survivors include two daughters, Sylvia Scarborough and Marion Thomas of Clarksville; two brothers and sisters-in-law, William and Marjorie Scarborough and David and Dallas Scarborough; two grandchildren, Jason Papakostas and Miranda Thomas; and several nieces and nephews. She is survived by two sons and one daughter-in-law, Michael and Jean Ann Kimbriel and Aaron Kimbriel, all of Clarksville; mother, Mrs. Opal Campbell of Clarksville; two sisters, Maudie Armstrong of Fort Smith and Jerry King of Clarksville; three brothers, Jim Campbell of Clarksville, Wayne Campbell of Sherwood, and George Hampton of Fort Smith; seven nieces; five nephews; and one great-niece. He was a retired soft drink bottling company employee, Army veteran of the Korean War, son of the late Roy and Mattie Nichols Belt, and a native of Ozark. She was a native of Caruthersville, Mo., daughter of the late Pauline Alford Stout, retired employee of Wayne Poultry in Danville, and a member of the Baptist Church. Survivors include her husband, Dan Latham; one son, Douglas Latham of Japan; two other daughters, Teresa Parker of San Angelo, Texas, and Pamela Sharp of Russellville; father, C. W. Kutait, 72, of Fort Smith, father of Mary Ellen Robbins of Clarksville, died Saturday, Oct. 17, 1998, in Clarksville. He was a retired Episcopal priest after last serving St. Bartholomew Episcopal Church of Fort Smith. He attended the University of Missouri, College of the Ozarks, and Master of Divinity from the University of the South in Sewanee, Tenn. He was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church in Fort Smith, was on the board of Harbor House, member of the County Welfare Board and Noon Civics Club, past member of the Gateway Board, Standing Committee Diocese of Arkansas, Executive Committee Diocese of Arkansas, past delegate to two general conventions of the Episcopal Church, past delegate of the VII Province of the Episcopal Church, a retired major chaplain in the United States Army having served during World War II, and was preceded in death by his wife, Elveda Kutait. Among the other churches he served were St. John's Episcopal of Harrison, St. Andrew's Episcopal of Mountain Home, Emmanuel Episcopal of Lake Village, St. Paul's Episcopal of McGehee, St. Augustine's Episcopal of Fort Smith, and St. Matthew's Episcopal in Clarksville. Survivors include two other daughters, Julia Sophia Dobbins of Fort Smith and Najla Louise Kutait of Tulsa, Okla.; one sister, Nita K. Fawcett of Fort Smith; three brothers, Dr. Kemal Kutait and Jesse Kutait, both of Fort Smith, and Edward Lee Kutait of Little Rock; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Funeral was at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 20, at St. John's Episcopal Church with burial at Woodlawn Memorial Park in Fort Smith. He was a son of the late Lewis and Lura Reed Vire, attended Oark High School, graduated from Arkansas Tech University in Russellville and attended the University of Arkansas. He was a World War II veteran having served in the South Pacific during wartime, a laboratory technician for 43 years, and employed by the Catapillar Tractor Company of Peoria, Ill. Survivors include one other sister, Jewell Pack of Springdale; one brother, Vernon Hartsil Vire of Ozark; three nephews; five nieces; six great-nephews; and four great-nieces. He was a retired oil field employee, member of the First United Methodist Church, and son of the late Crawford E. and Lura Huskey Burgess.
