Wayne Nixon gwn71667@yahoo.com June 9, 2009, 1:37 pm "The Pine Bluff Daily" Pine Bluff, Jefferson Co., Arkansas Friday, December 6, 1889 A Sad Accident Mr. S. N. Singleton, a Prominent Planter of This County Is Accidentally Killed while out Turkey Hunting on His Plantation Wednesday News was conveyed to this city yesterday of the death of Mr. S. N. Singleton, a native of this state, near his plantation on the Star City bayou road, fourteen miles from this city. It seems that Mr. Singleton accompanied by one of his sons, last Wednesday (Dec 4) evening started out turkey hunting. As they expected to go some distance they hitched up a team to a wagon and started. When they arrived at the hunting grounds Mr. Singleton left the wagon and walked along the side of the road. He soon discovered a bunch of wild turkeys and discharged both barrels of his gun at them. He then ran to the wagon and asked his son to hand him his (son's) gun, which the youth did. In his haste Mr. Singleton drew the gun over the edge of the wagon bed, and, the hammers catching, both barrels discharged their contents into his body, striking the poor man in the right breast and literally blowing the life out of him. His son was horrified and summoned help and had his father's remains removed home. The funeral took place yesterday, he interment being at the Star City cemetery. Mr. Singleton was about 34 years of age, a native of Arkansas, and leaves a wife and seven children to mourn his untimely departure from this world.
