West Martin M. West, 75, resident of Pine Bluff for the past 25 years, passed away Wednesday afternoon at 6:30 o’clock at his home at Watson Chapel, following a sudden attack. Mr. West had apparently been enjoying his usual health and his sudden death, came as a shock to his family and friends. He was born near Albany, Miss., on October 25, 1967, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. James Clark West, pioneer residents of Mississippi. Mr. West came to Arkansas with his parents when he was three years of age and made his home in Lincoln County until the fall of 1917 when he moved to Pine Bluff with his family. During his residence here, he has been engaged in the operation of a dairy and truck farm at Watson Chapel. Mr. West was a member of the Immanuel Baptist Church of this city. He was married to Miss Americus Bailey at Star City on December 24, 1889. Mr. and Mrs. West celebrated their golden wedding anniversary on December 24, 1939. In addition to his widow, he is survived by two sons, Orbie L. West of Pine Bluff and Melvin C. West of Altheimer; two granddaughters, Mrs. Austin Turner of Little Rock and Miss Imogene West of Altheimer; three brothers, Will West of Dumas, Horace A. West of McGehee and John West of El Dorado, Ark., and other relatives. Funeral services will be held Friday morning at 10 o’clock from the Immanuel Baptist Church in charge of the Rev. Paul Aiken, the pastor. Burial will be on the family lot in Hickory Grove Cemetery at Star City, in charge of Ralph Robinson and Son Mortuary. Active pallbearers will be: Jimmy Reed, Earnest Bush, Jesse Reynolds, Walter Dodds, Arthur Bailey and Carol Baxter of Pine Bluff and Opie Miller of Sherrill, Arkansas. Honorary pallbearers will be: Ed West, W. H. Dowling, Dr. J. S. Spillyards, C. E. Gorman, Judge West, J. E. Glover, G. H. Wilson, Dr. O. W. Clark, W. C. McBryde, J. B. Tuttle and Abe Minsker of Pine Bluff, the Rev. Henry Spillyards of Malvern, Will Fish and A. O. Vick of Star City. The body will be at the family home at Watson Chapel until funeral time.
