McCright deserves mention in this work as a popular official of Bowie County, Tex., as well as a man of recognized worth, and substantial, progressive spirit. He was ushered into the world in Texas, May 27, 1847, being a son of Robert and Fannie Pleasant (Shackley) McCright, natives of Mississippi and South Carolina respectively. They were married in Alabama, and in 1846 came to Texas, and here the mother is still living, but the father died while serving in the Confederate army during the late war. He was a mechanic, and as such was fairly successful. Grandfather James McCright, a native of South Carolina, was a soldier in the War of 1812. The subject of this sketch is the first of seven children born to his parents, all of whom are living, and was reared in his native State, receiving a good education in the common schools. He chose Miss Sarah F. Shipp as his companion in life, and their marriage was celebrated in 1869. She was born in Texas, and is a daughter of Samuel and Huldah Shipp. This union was blessed in the birth of six children - two sons and four daughters - all of whom survive. By the death of Mr. Akin, treasurer of Bowie County, in 1887, Mr. McCright was appointed to fill the vacancy in April of that year, and he performed the duties incumbent upon this office so capably, and gave such entire satisfaction to the tax-payers of the county, that at the expiration of his term, he was re-elected to the office, and is still serving in that capacity. He had previously served as county commissioner for two years, and his career at that time, as well as later, was proved him to be a very trustworthy official. Mr.McCright owns a valuable farm of 800 acres of land in Bowie County, Tex., about twenty-two miles west of Texarkana, and about 100 acres of this land are under a high state of cultivation and well improved. He is a Master Mason, and cast his first presidential vote for Seymour. Mrs. McCright is a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South.
