Miss Martha Hawkins of Rocky Comfort, Ark., is visiting her sister, Mrs. Flippin. Mrs. W. W. Shaw is the President of W. C. T. U. Col. Gus Knobel, chief engineer of the Texarkana and Northern Railroad, visited us yesterday. Texarkana baseball team members are: Eddie Warren, McCollum, Libby, James, Griffith, Taylor, Hollister, Markowitch, and Zane Williams. Henry C. Kelley is running as assessor of Miller County. Mrs. Gaither's school will have a picnic Friday in the grove in front of H. W. Runnell's residence, about one mile from town. Col. Will Whitaker is expected home tomorrow. Mrs. Will Hoffman and sister, Miss Birdie Draughon, came up from Waco this morning. Misses Mabel Humphrey, Inez Tilson, Adney Burke, and Hattie Nash are returning home Saturday. They have been in Kentucky in school for ten months. Eddie Burke will return home from Jackson, Tenn., and David Tilson from Bryan, Texas with their diploma's. The Misses Elliot will return from Missouri. West Side School Board Members are: J. H. Henderson, Mayor and Chairperson; W. H. Behan, Dr. McMahon, Dr. Reed, and S. N. Hawes. Dr. Hannon is acting secretary or clerk. Col. Henry, Dr. Hannon, and S. N. Hawes were appointed to a committee. June 2, 1886 ............. Hon. J. R. (or B.) Byers has withdrawn from the race in the 4th Congressional Dist. Mr. Fear is fishing today. Will T. Hudgins went to DeKalb today. Charles DePrato is looking fine after his recent illness. Will Pattillio is up and about after a bout with fever. J. F. Smith & Co. have a fine stock of oils and paints. Kirk Bramble invited us to a picnic next Wednesday. There are now 38 guests at Dalby Springs. Attorney WEBBER"S (Prosecuting attorney) residence was the scene of a burglary a few night ago. Col. W. L. Whitaker, Pres. of the Texarkana & Northern Railroad returned last night from the East. A called meeting of the Democratic Central Committee of Miller County Arkansas was held at the Court House in Texarkana on May 29, 1886. Those present were: Paul Jones, Chairman; C. E. Bramble, Secretary; Rufus Higginbottom, J. J. Towery, H. N. McLain, M. T. Embree, (by proxy), W. E. Booker, C. M. Hervey, Royston Nash, and James Keister. Others whose names were mentioned at this meeting were: M.T. Collins, J. Paulk, Ignatious Few, Z.T. Few, J. C. Tyson, W. T. Bond, H. C. Kelley, C. W. Dodd, F. M. Cawthorn, and Evan S. Whetstone. A. J. Henry will practice law in Texarkana. Sorry to hear that Hank McCartney, the popular host of Cosmopolitan Hotel, is on the "grunting" list. Hope he is well soon. June 3, 1886 .................. John W. Ronen left for Hot Springs this morning. Mrs. Pettigrew returned from Mineral Springs yesterday. Shack Rochelle and Finnie Tillson returned from school this A. M. Mrs. Benefield, mother of Captain J. M. Benefield, returned home today. M. H. Pilgrim, the good looking commercial pilgrim, is in the city today. Lucian Adams returned to his home at Fulton, from school in Texas today. Mrs. Watson, mother of the Messrs. Watson, employees of this office, is quite sick. Haywood, charged with killing Capt. Root, has been acquitted in the district court at Jefferson. Dick Arnold will spend Sunday at Ft. Worth, J. A. Lightfoot at Dalby Springs, Mayor Henderson, At Atlanta, while Jo Cook will go to College Hill. "Uncle Lewis" Alexander, the popular clerk of the District court of Bowie county, has returned from a trip into the country. Col. DeMorse, J. D. Hall, and Jimmie Dowsing from this city, are stopping at the Waverly House in Hot Springs. Capt. H. C. Ellis, that most worthy gentleman conductor of the T. C. Railroad, is resting with his family in the city today. H. J. Allen, of Queen City, visited us yesterday. W. E. Wooten, Judge of County and probate courts, of Red River County, Texas - the past 20 years, suicided at Clarksville, Texas. Dr. Wooten, his uncle, was called there by telegram, and left this morning. The supposed cause was ill health. Col. W. W. Carloss, we hear is running for Representative of Miller County. Jo Marx is getting ready to build a handsome brick home. June 4, 1886 ........ Will H. Ward went over to Magnolia yesterday.
