All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm *********************************************************** Shreveport Paper - December 14, 1996 OIL CITY, LA - Services for John Charles Dickey Sr. age 69, will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, December 15, 1996 in Ferry Lake Baptist Church Oil City. Officiating will be Rev. Treadway, pastor of Ferry Lake Baptist and Assisted by Chip Dickey. Burial will be in Lakeview Cemetery under the direction of McGuire Funeral Home. Special music provided by Royce Graham and Danny Haddox. Mr. Dickey passed away Thursday, December 12, 1996 at Willis-Knighton Medical Center after a lengthy illness. He was a native of Fouke, AR. And a resident of Oil City, La. For the past 49 years. He graduated from Mooringsport High School in 1945 and chose his home to be Oil City, Louisiana. His initial residency in Oil City. La. Resulted in work as a commercial fisherman and later resumed into work with heavy construction. He was a very hard working and dedicated man who took on job after job to provide for his family and to serve his community. He was a member of First Methodist Church of Oil City, Rotary Club and the Oil City Historical Society. He carried out of his love for Oil City, La. By serving as mayor for 16 years. He worked very hard to make Oil City the welcoming place he knew it could be. Under his administration a town sewer system was put in, unsightly oil derricks were removed, and land was acquired for Earl Williamson State Park. He was on the board for the renovation of the Caddo Pine Island Museum, and he fought a long battle to keep Oil City Elementary/Middle School open. During the 4 terms he served as mayor, many new homes and buildings were established; The Community Center, 3 housing projects,____ Oaks Apartments, and the new City Hall. After retirement from his leadership position as mayor, he continued to reside and serve in Oil City. He was self-employed and ran several businesses in and around Oil City. In addition to everything he has done for his community he showed his love for his country by serving in World War II. John C Dickey Sr. is the belated husband of Dolly Dickey for 49 years: the dedicated father of Charlotte D. Clifton, Leslie D. Allen, John C. Dickey Jr. and Tony R. Dickey and the loving grandfather of twelve. He is also survived by two sisters, Opal Black of Oil City, La and Elsie Bennett of Sacramento, CA and three brothers, Chester Dickey of Sacramento, CA, Wallace Dickey of Texarkana, TX and H. H. "Slick" Dickey of Oil City, LA. Pallbearers will be Lee Dickey, Joseph Dickey, T. J. Dickey, J. C. Dickey III, Luke Allen, Leighton Allen, James Clifton, Jr., David Eugene Smith and Brad Webb. John C. Dickey Sr. lived a life of service and gave of himself unselfishly to others. He would always put a smile in your heart and a kiss on your cheek. His friendly face and loving arms made him the "Tat Tol" we will never forget and will always love.
