Sweeney, age 21, of San Antonio, died Sunday, September 4, 1983, after a ten month fight against cancer. A 1980 graduate of Madison High School, Sweeney believed everyone was deserving of a second chance. He always thought no one should be unhappy when they died because you received a second chance when you did and couldn't think of anyone going anyplace but "Heaven". He discovered that he had cancer while attending New York University. He decided to return to San Antonio to be with his family and for treatment at Medical Center Hospital. He had always been healthy and kept in shape. He loved running track and liked to run the 50 yard dash and the 440 relay. In his Junior High days, he won several awards and ribbons for his running. He was a very private person and kept things to himself. He seldom discussed his problems with other people. He chose his friends very carefully and was a good listener. He was a very sensitive person who became aware of certain religious aspects when he went to the hospital. He read the Bible to gain strength from its teachings. During his illness, be became very close to his family and drew a great deal of strength from his parents.
