Jan 6 - 1961 My dear Miss Lily, From the John Cain Chapter, year book; see you will be in Washington in May. I was born in Washington and thought I'd tell you a few things to see while you are there. The Magnolia Tree planted 1839 by Grandison D. Royston, my father born in the home built on this spot. My grand father Grandison D. Royston sold this home to Dr. Isaac Newton Jones my mother's grand father and she was born here. My grandfather Royston built a home in 1845 and planted a magnolia tree there. The house is in good repair, Mr. Levins lives there. The tavern built by my cousin Lucile Hart King and husband W. R. King is outstanding. The Blacksmiths Shop you'll see near Block-Catts Home where "The Tea" will be - and back of it The Pioneer Cemetery "My Project". At one time I was "Chairman of Marking Historical Spots" in Ark. While I no longer hold that office, am interested in Pioneer Cemetery; as my ancestors of fathers and mother's are buried there. Don't fail to see it. We have $147.51 on a marker for it. I'm of the modest "violet type" - and do not give the marker the publicity I should I suppose. James Black of Bowie Knife fame was blind. My mother's grandfather took care of him until grand father died, then his son Gov Danil Jones took care of Mr. Black till he passed away. Hope I get to have a chat with you when in Washington; but, you know at a Tea, one never gets to really talk and I do want you to see "Historical Washington" for 4th, eleven of the Colonial Dames enjoyed a tour there. I met them in Hope and went with them. I've had several letters from them telling me how much they enjoyed the "Tour" and would be back this spring. You gave me so much pleasure when in Jonesboro and I have that pretty "Lily of the Valley" corsage a reminder of the generosity of a charming person. Hoping I see you in Little Rock at D.A.R. meeting. Sincerely, Bessie Royston Battles File at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/ar/monroe/history/letters/peterbat121gms.txt This file has been created by a form at http://www.genrecords.org/arfiles/ File size: 2.5 Kb
