Dear Lily,

     It was a great sadness to Ivar Lou and me to get Ted's note yesterday that 
definitely cancelled the possibility of your being here for the Literary 
Symposium. I had envisaged, and was on the point of writing you about it, a 
plan whereby you could come via bus to Nashville (I'd even had Mrs. Richardson 
look up schedules) on Tues., Apr. 19, and ride with us to Tuscaloosa on 
Thursday. We are mainly concerned because we realize now that your accident was 
more than we had at first thought. We do hope you haven't suffered much pain 
and that your recovery will now be rapid. Certainly you are wise to follow the 
doctor's orders.

     Bettie McDavid, you will be happy to know, has accepted the scholarship 
and is delighted to have received it. She will be distressed to learn that she 
won't get to meet you next week as I had promised her. Betty Hayes declined to 
accept an offer from another university. We have written to #3 on your list: 
Andrea Corbett, of the university of New Hampshire, whom you will recall as 
being very promising. I'll let you know when I hear from her.

     Fate seems to be averse to my introducing you in person to a Lit. Symp. 
audience, but I refuse to give up hope and herewith ask you to reserve the 
corresponding date of April 1967 for that much-to-be-desired event.

     All in the Dept. share my regret that you won't be with us this year--and 
join me in wishing for your speedy recovery.
