MIDWINTER DREAMS



Was it I who walked this country road

Last night and heard the crash

Of bare branched trees in the bitter wind,

Wracked in its wanton lash?



You walked beside me, strong, like the trees

And sheltered me--it seems,

Or was it the oak, the gossamer

Of still-wood winter dreams?



Was it I or blown brown leaf who clung

Against your breast and found

That love pulsed there, warm and sweet--like seeds

Of life in frozen ground?
