The cemetery is on the top of the hill in a field on the old Ward Phillips place. Most everyone buried there is related to Meredith T. Armstrong, who was born in 1819 in Jonesville, Surry County North Carolina. In the 1850 Surry county was divided and Jonesville area is now in Yadkin county North Carolina. We believe Meredith's parents were James and Elizabeth Swaim Armstrong. Meredith brought his wife and family to Newton Co. in the late 1860s, possibly 1868 or 69. He is first found in the 1870 census of Newton County. He was a Confederate soldier in North Carolina and was with the Army in the Indian removal from western North Carolina in 1836. He was married to Anna Allen in 1846 in Jonesville North Carolina. This cemetery is now in the Buffalo River Federal Park and is closed to further burials. The cemetery has no order, just a close order jumble. On some graves there are fieldstones placed on top of each other in graduated sizes. I'm not sure who was first buried here. Possibly Anna Allen Armstrong, Meredith's wife born 1830 died May 24 1883. No inscription, just 3 graduated fieldstones stacked on top of each other. There is also a question as to who is buried in the grave at the feet of Anna and Meredith. It is said to belong to Janette. This could be Janette Allen who is listed on the 1870 census as living with Meredith and his wife. On this census Hulda Armstrong is listed as her daughter. Hulda Armstrong Jones had a child named Janette. So we don't know for sure whom this grave belongs to. Meredith Armstrong born 1819 died March 1 1899 No inscription, just a fieldstones. A bit larger than his wife's. Jim Armstrong 1870 no death date son of Meredith and Janette Allen. The only one of Meredith's children born in Arkansas.
