The cemetery is located near the Newton and Pope County line. You can easily find the cemetery if you go to Lurton and turn down the road where the old Lurton School once stood (now the site of the community building.) Go approximately three miles until you cross Richland Creek, in a curve to the left you will notice picnic tables on the right side of the road, built for use on Decoration Day. From there you can follow the road back toward the creek off the main road. The cemetery lies on a hill beside Richland Creek. The earliest burial in the cemetery is undetermined, however, three of the earliest ones are remembered. Three Standridges were "bushwhacked" during the Civil War and killed, their women buried them in a common grave. But, the exact location is not determined, except it is probably to the right as you enter the cemetery. It is interesting to note that some Union soldiers were found hung near where the Standridge family lived. They were buried at the site and about 20 years later the government moved the bodies to a Federal Cemetery. It appears that the earliest burials must have been about 1830, since it was about that time when the earliest settlers came to Richland. Some of the earliest settlers names were Standridge, Meeks, Ross, Yates, Greenhaw, Rosamond, George, Maxville (or Maxwell) and others who were some of the County's earliest settlers.
