The abbreviation of Arkansas was sometimes Arks instead of Ark. *First part of Behestian Township, dwelling #515/family #526, listed on last page of Marion Township. *Behestian Township had several different handwriting styles. Some writing is easier to read than others. *Page #82/80: Dwelling #564/family #582 – John H. Adams listed as female. *Mistakes were made throughout document, and then corrected by the census taker *I have placed other comments in the remarks column of the document. ----------------------------------------------------------------- 1860 Census - Ouachita Co., Arkansas – Ecore fabrie Township Notes: Handwriting was difficult at first because of the different ways they made letters. It became easier the more names I transcribed. Page 175/173 – Dwelling #1195 – Family #1273 The last child of the Smoot family. I am not sure of the spelling. I thought it was "Josaphine", a girl's name, but the child is listed as a boy. I know that the first two letter are"Jo" and the last five letters are "phine". Page176/174 Enumerator put the wrong enumeration date. He put "15th Sept 1860" instead of the "14th Sept 1860". Dwelling #1200 – Family#1278 The last child of the Bragg family, John M. Bragg, is listed as a female.' ----------------------------------------------------------------- 1860 Ouachita Co. - Arkansas Census – Jackson Township – Reel M653-47 Notes: *Jackson Township has been the easiest township to transcribe so far. It has become easier to know the different letter formations and also I have learned to look very closely. Sometimes part of the letter is within another line. *There were only a few names that were hard to make out and they still may be spelled wrong. *Some mistakes were made throughout the document, and then corrected by the census taker. *I have placed other comments in the remarks column of the document. ----------------------------------------------------------------- 1860 Ouachita Co. - Arkansas Census Jefferson Township Reel M653-47 Notes: *First part of Jefferson Township, dwelling #100/family #105 dwelling #103/family #108, listed on last page of Liberty Township. *On page 23/21: Dwelling #163/family #167 Dwelling #166/family #170 (family member, Zeparine Moreland), there are no birthplaces listed. *Some mistakes were made throughout the document, and then corrected by the census taker. *I have placed other comments in the remarks column of the document. ----------------------------------------------------------------- 1860 Ouachita Co. - Arkansas Census Liberty Township Reel M653-47 19/June/2008 Sandra Barnes Notes: *First part of Jefferson Township, dwelling #100/family #105 dwelling #103/family #108, listed on last page of Liberty Township. *Liberty Township has been the easiest to transcribe and has not had as many mistakes. *I have placed other comments in the remarks column of the document. ----------------------------------------------------------------- 1860 Ouachita Co. - Arkansas Census – Marion Township NOTES: Page 66/64: Dwelling #463/ Family #472 – Head of household listed as James Lewis. Next there is E Ward (quotation mark under Lewis), which means that E Ward’s surname was Lewis. In my abstraction, I considered Sallie, James, William, & Andrew’s surname to be Lewis. However, I have discovered in another place that someone considered their surname to be Ward. Page 66/64: Dwelling #466/ Family #474 – I have studied the writing style of this census taker very carefully, and I came to the conclusion that on this surname the spelling is Gummett. Another source transcribed it to be Grimmett. Page 74/72: This is the last page of Marion Township and also begins the first part of Behestian Township. *Other mistakes made and then corrected by enumerator. *I have placed other comments in remarks column of document. ----------------------------------------------------------------- 1860 Census – Ouachita Co., Arkansas – Smackover Township The handwriting is much easier to transcribe now. The only place I still have trouble is with the “J” and “I”, if they are used as an initial. He makes them almost exactly alike. I did not realize there were so many women that owned land and were farmers. I really didn’t think that women in the 1800’s could own land except under certain circumstances. Page 55/53 Dwelling #388/Family #390 Richard Deberry listed as female Page 58/56 Dwelling #409/Family #412 Robt E Hughes listed as female Page 63/61 Dwelling #442/Family #448 Elizabeth Morgan listed as male Dwelling #442/Family #449 Jane Griffin listed as male Page 64/62 Dwelling #447/Family #456 Ellen Wicker – The enumerator wrote in column #9 (Value of Personal Estate Owned) 200, but then marked through it. The 200 belonged on the next line. I did not include the mistake on the transcription. I was not sure whether to put it or not. Page 62/60 Dwelling #439/Families #441, 442, & 443 The enumerator did not put anything down in column #10 (Place of Birth). In the past, if they did not know where they were born, he would put “unknown”. It looks like he just didn’t finish the page. ----------------------------------------------------------------- 1860 Census – Ouachita Co., Arkansas – Carouse Township 11/Dec/2007 Sandra Barnes Notes: Page: 41/39 – Dwelling #289 - Family #293 I can not definitely make out what he was writing for the last name. A lot of his letters all look alike sometimes. The last child (Daniel E) is listed as a female. Page: 42/40 – Dwelling #296 – Family #300 At first this family was hard to figure out, I did some research into the 1950 Census. They had both been married before and had children. Emily's first husband's last name was Friend. I also found that the enumerator has the last child listed as Martha Friend when it is shown in other census ha Martha Kemp. I believe Hillery Kemp should be listed as a female. Page: 46/44 – Dwelling #323 – Family #324 Andrew Blackwood is listed as a female. Dwelling #324 – Family #326 Martha Shulth is listed as a male. Page: 47/45 – Dwelling #329 – Family #332 I not sure about the enumerator's spelling of this surname either. Page: 48/46 – Dwelling #336 – Family #338 Hazel is listed as a male. Dwelling #340 – Family #342 Enumerator crossed the "h" in Marsha Page: 49/47 – Dwelling #347 – Family #348 Joshua Andrews listed as female. Dwelling #350 – Family #353 Not sure about the surname (Gutlett) Page 53/51 – Dwelling #372 – Family #374 through Dwelling #377 – Family #379 Has no census date Page 54/52 – Combination of Carouse and Smackover Townships (Census date 9th July 1860) Dwelling #378 – Family #380 through Dwelling #382 – Family #384 listed on this page -----------------------------------------------------------------
