All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm *********************************************************** Wednesday, May 31, 1995 Vol. II Page 1 Obituary Mrs. ALMA FAUST Buried Monday with picture (Mrs. Alma Ewart Faust) Graveside service for Mrs. Alma Ewart Faust of West Helena, along time resident and member of a pioneer family, was conducted at Maple Hill Cemetery Monday, May 29, 1995, afternoon. The Rev. Wilson Deese officiated. Arrangements were under direction of Edwards Funeral Home. Mrs. Faust died Saturday morning, May 27, 1995. at her home. The widow of Fred A. Faust, her parents were Allie and Thomas Ewart, early settlers of the West Helena area. She was a charter member of the West Helena Baptist Church and served the congregation as treasurer for more than 50 years. She also authored a history of the church. Mrs. Faust was a member of the first graduating class at Woodruff High School in 1916 and also wrote a history of Woodruff High School. Always interested in her community and in the things that went on around her, she was an active participant in civic affairs. She was for more than 60 years, a member of the Current topic Club and served as a member of the James Bate Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She was also a former member of the Helena-West Helena Altrusa Club. In 1973, she was honored by the Phillips County Bar Association with the presentation to her of The “Liberty Bell” award. She was a retired vice president of First National Bank of Phillips County, being one of the first women in Arkansas to be named to such a high ranking bank post. She served as treasurer of the Twin Cities’ campaign to raise over $300,000 for the construction of the Arts Center on the campus of Phillips County Community College. Survivors include two sons, Fred and Thomas E. Faust of Helena; a daughter, Laura F. Deitz of West Helena; two daughters-in-laws, Ann and Betty Faust; nine grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. PAGE 2 OBITUARIES CONTINUED: JOE W. CLINE Funeral service for Joe William Cline of North Little Rock was conducted Sunday, May 28, at St. John’s Episcopal Church. The Rev. John Maury Allin Sr., 23rd presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church in The United States, officiated. Burial was in Maple Hill Cemetery under direction of Roller Citizens Funeral Home. Mr. Cline, 76, died Friday, May 26, 1995, at Baptist Memorial Hospital. He was a former resident of Helena and owner of Parker Hardware. He was a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church, a Navy veteran of World War II, and a member of the Earl Wells Hunting Club. Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Loraine Cline of North Little Rock; two sons, Earnest E. Cline of North Little Rock and Joe William Cline Jr. of Baton Rouge, Louisiana; a daughter, Cathy Cline Bradshaw of Little Rock; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Pallbearers were David Williams, Bill Brothers, Phil Herlein, Pete Topp, Chuck McMillian, Henry Simpson, Austin Goodman, Otis Howe, Bill Cremeen, Barney Lewis, Ham Moses, Stanley Harrison, Jim Walden, and Jim Mayer. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to ST. John’s Episcopal Church. HOWARD C. LANGWELL Graveside service for Reverend Howard Charles Langwell of Lexa was conducted Monday afternoon, May 29, at Central Cemetery near Lexa. The Rev. Harold Grisby officiated. Arrangements were under direction of Roller-Citizen Funeral Home. Rev. Langwell, 73, died Saturday, May 27, 1995 at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Forrest City. He was a native of Fort Smith, a retired Baptist minister, and a member of the Fourth Street Missionary Baptist Church. He was also a veteran of World War II. Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Alice Langwell of Lexa; a son, Howard C. Langwell, Jr. of Lexa; two daughters, Jennifer Langwell of Lexa and Mrs. Joyce Callie of Mablevale, Arkansas; three brothers, Lewis Langwell of California, Burl Jones of Little Rock, and Ranson Jones of Cave City; one grandchild and three great-grand children. MISS RUTH MARGARET WOOD Funeral service for Ruth Margaret Wood of Crumrod was conducted Tuesday morning, May 30, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church. The Rev. Earl Booth officiated. Miss Wood died Saturday, May 27, 1995, at HRMC. She was a school teacher in the Elaine Public School System, and a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church. Survivors include her brother, James Wood of Crumrod, two sisters, Hollie Eugenia Gattas of Memphis, and Elizabeth Wood Insley of Salisburg, Maryland, numerous nieces and nephews. Pallbearers were Phillip Gattas, Edward L. Sanderlin, John R. Sanderlin, James Gattas, Thomas Gattas, Fred Gattas, Jr. and Andrew Gattas. Honorary pallbearers were John Wood and James Insley. THURMAN R. McDOWELL Funeral service for Thurman Robert McDowell was held Tuesday afternoon, May 30, at Roller Citizens Chapel. The Rev. Thomas Murry officiated. Burial was in Sunset Memorial Park under direction of Roller-Citizens Funeral Home. Mr. McDowell, 63, died Sunday, May 28, 1995, at his home. Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Johnnie McDowell of West Helena; one son, Rob McDowell of Friendship, Arkansas; two daughters, Debbie Dillier of Little Rock and Patty Waddell of Little Rock ; his mother, Ernestine Fridell of West Helena; and five grandchildren, Allison, Elizabeth, Jessie, Grace and Anna. Pallbearers were John L. Harden, Vernon A. Mathews, Boyd Chambers, and Joe Madonia. The family requests memorials be sent to the West Helena United Methodist Church. Bro. Eugene Johnson and Bro. Austin Hamilton officiated. Burial was in Marianna Memorial Park under direction of Roller-Citizens Funeral Home. Mrs. Neal, 77, died Thursday, May 25, 1995, at the University Medical Center. She was a past board member of the Lee Co. Farm Bureau and of the Lee County Museum in Marianna. Survivors include two daughters, June Swink of Little Rock, and Janie Marion Nicholas of Bay St. Louis, Mississippi; one son, Stephen Lee Neal of Hot Springs; ten grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
