SYBLE GREEN Funeral service for Mrs. Syble Dolores Wood Green of Wynne was conducted Wed. afternoon at The Thompson-Wilson Funeral HomeChapel in Wynne. The Rev. Jim Parker, pastor of the East Baptist Church, officiated. Burial was in Bolivar Cemetery in Harrisburg. Mrs. Green, 61, died Dec. 28, at her home in Wynne. She was a former resident of West Helena and had lived there most of her life. She moved to Wynne seven years ago. She was a private care attendant for more than 13 years before retiring in 1996. She wa a member of the Baptist Church. Survivors include two sons, Gilbert Burgess and James Green, both of Wynne; two sisters, Pat Hislip of Bernie, Mo. and Linda Mavity of Harrisburg; nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. FRANK GREGORY JR Funeral service for Alfred "Frank" Gregory Jr. of Lexa was conducted Dec. 14 at the United Methodist Church in West Helena. The Rev. Cornelia DeLee officiated. Burial was in Sunset Memorial Park under direction of Roller-Citizens Funeral Home. Mr. Gregory, 74, died Dec. 12 at the Baptist Memorial Hospital in Memphis. A native of Elaine, Mr. Gregory was a retired farmer, a member of the Wycamp Co-op board, and served for many years as a member of the Phillips County Quorum Court. He was a WWII Army veteran and served with the 83rd Division in the European Theatre of Operations. He was also a member of the West Helena United Methodist Church, the Masonic Lodge was a Shriner. Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Louise Gregory of Lexa; a brother, Glen Gregory of Cabot; three sisters, Mrs. Julia McKinney, Mrs. Mable Chambers, and Mrs. Vesta Brantley, all of West Helena. Pallbearers was nephews. Honorary pallbearers were members of the Wycamp Co-op board of directors; George Doster, Turk Corder, Bo Corder, David Inebnit, A.Y. Gordon, Hershel Schwantz, Kenneth Winfrey, and Al Rogers. (Editor's note: Mr. Gregory's obituary was somehow left out of the Dec. 16 issue of The Progress. She was a native of Blackton, a retired secretary for the Apache, Arizona Chamber of Commerce; and a member of the American Legion and the Elks Club. SCOTT JR Funeral service for Sam E. Scott Jr. of Helena was conducted Tues. afternoon at Roller-Citizens Funeral Home. The Rev. Al Majors officiated. Burial was in Sunset Memorial Park. Mr. Scott, 68, died Sat. at St. Vincent's Infirmary in Little Rock following a long battle with cancer. He was a native of Marvell, a retired millwright superintendent, and a member of the First Baptist Church in Helena. Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Beulah Scott of Helena; a daughter, Mrs. Donna Pierce of Helena; three sisters, Mrs. Margrete Morehart of Edgemont, Ark., Mrs. Lucille Henry of Carrollton, TX., and Mrs. Clara Wooten of Rondo; two brothers, Lowell Scott of Hot Springs and James Scott of Holly Grove, and two grandchildren. He was a lifelong resident of Phillips Co., a member of the West Helena Baptist Church, and a retired West-Hornor Motor Company mechanic. Surviving were two nephews and six nieces MRS. JOSEPHINE WARD Funeral service for Mrs. Josephine Ward of Oneida was conducted Tues. morning at the First Baptist Church in Lakeview. The Rev. Leroy Williams officiated. Burial was in the First Baptist Church of Oneida cemetery under direction of Stephens Funeral Home. Mrs. Ward, 62, died July 21 after being struck by an automobile as she walked along a road in Oneida. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Lakeview, where she sang in the choir. She was an honorary Gospel two and assisted at the Lakeview Senior Citizens Center as a Mid-Delta Community Services volunteer.. CLAY Funeral services for Rastus H. Clay of Elaine was conducted Saturday morning, Jan. 9, 1999, at Roller-Citizens Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in Murphy Creek Cemetery in Louisville, Mississippi. Mr. Clay, 66, died January 4, 1999, at his home in Elaine. He was a security guard at Chicago Mill and Lumber Company and was a native of Louisville, Mississippi. There were no survivors. JACK L. GROVES Funeral service for Jack Lafe Groves of Lexa was conducted Friday afternoon, Jan. 8, 1999, at Barton Baptist Church. The Rev. O. S. Cooper officiated. Burial was in Sunset Memorial Park under the direction of Roller-Citizens Funeral Home. Mr. Groves, 77, died January 6, 1999, at Helena Regional Medical Center. He was a retired millwright and was in the construction business. He was a native of Lexa and a member of the Barton Baptist Church, where he served as deacon. He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge. Survivors include two sons, Tommy Groves of Bella Vista and Steve Groves of Lexa; two sisters, Mrs. Betty Stacy of West Memphis and Mrs. Marie Holder of Greer’s Ferry; and five grandchildren. Pallbearers were Jimmy Scott, Dennis Scott, Larry Groves, Bruce Adams Jr., Terry Adams, and Danny Scott. MOORE Funeral service for William Robert Moore of McCrory, former resident of Phillips County, was conducted Saturday afternoon, January 9, 1999, at Thompson - Wilson Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in Sunset Memorial Park in West Helena. Mr. Moore, 83, was a retired carpenter and farmer. He was a native of Woodruff County and lived in Phillips County from 1944 until 1988, when he retired and returned to Woodruff County. He was a native of Cotton Plant, a member of the Faith Baptist Church, a Shriner and a Mason. Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Lucille Moore of McCrory; two sons, Willis Moore of West Helena and Joe Moore of Camden; two daughters, Mrs. Linda Kemp of Monticello and Mrs. Wanda Davis of McCrory; a sister, Mrs. Hazel Hale of West Helena; seven grandchildren; and seven great -grandchildren. The family requests any memorials go to either the Faith Baptist Church, the Woodruff County Nursing Home or the American Cancer Society. JAMES STEWART JR. Funeral services for James Stewart Jr. of West Helena was conducted Saturday afternoon, Jan. 9, 1999, at Springlake Missionary Baptist Church. The Rev. Malcom Curne officiated. Burial was in Springlake Cemetery under the direction of Stephens Funeral Home. Mr. Stewart, 60, died Jan. 1, 1999, at Helena Regional Medical Center. He was a member of the Mount Olive Missionary Baptist Church and served as a deacon until his death. Mr. Stewart moved to the community of Southland at an early age and attended southland School. He later graduated from Eliza Miller High School. He was employed by Mohawk Rubber Company for 22 years. Burial was in Schaffhauser cemetery. Mrs. Moon, 96, died at her residence in Little Rock July 6. She was a homemaker, a native of East Bernstadt, KY., and a member of the Church of Christ in Marvell. She was a retired Southwestern Bell telephone operator and a native of Clarendon. Survivors include her husband, Vernon Haas of Pine Bluff; a son, H. E. Hartsell of Little Rock; a daughter, Mrs. Laura Von Kanel of Lexa; a brother, J. C. DOUGLAS L. RAGSDALE Graveside service for Douglas Lee "Buddy" Ragsdale of Helena was conducted Tuesday morning at Sunset Memorial Park in West Helena. The Rev. James Wailing officiated. Arrangements were under the direction of Roller-Citizens Funeral Home. Mr. Ragsdale, 52, died at the home of his sister, Mrs. Kay Slaughter, after a brief battle with cancer. He was an employee of the Arkansas Highway Transportation Department, a member of the First Baptist Church in Helena; a Navy veteran of the Vietnam War, having served aboard the USS Newport News. He was also a graduate of Phillips County Community College. Survivors, in addition to his sister, Kay Slaughter of West Helena, include another sister, Mrs. Linda King of Anahuac, Texas; three brothers, George Ragsdale of Bearden, Stephen Ragsdale of Poplar Grove, and Frank Ragsdale of Zachary, Louisiana. Cornelia DeLee officiated. Burial was in Forrest Park in Forrest City under directions of National Funeral Home of Clarksdale. Mrs. Taylor, 78, died Saturday at Helena Regional Medical Center after a long illness. The owner of Two-States Monument Company for over 50 years. Mrs. Taylor retired several years ago because of failing health. She was a member of the West Helena United Methodist Church, where she served for many years as a member of the Building and Grounds Committee. She was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and a former member of the Phillips County Chamber of Commerce. Survivors include two daughters & son-in-laws, Margaret Ann Laurel & David A. Laurel of Hoengen, Germany, Joyce & Howard Taylor of West Helena and Glenda Bryan of Chattanooga , Tennessee; two sisters, Lucille Crow of Texarkana, Texas and Bonnie Bishop of Maryville, Tennessee; three grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.
