Seventy-Third Year - No. 286 Jonesboro, Arkansas 72401 Thursday, November 4, 1976 Three Killed In Car-Truck Collision by Larry Fugate Three persons were fataily injured shotly before 5 Wednesday afternoon in a grinding car-truck collision on Arkansas 1 in the Greenfield Community between Jonesboro and Harrisburg, State Trooper John Williams said. The accident victims were identified as Mrs. Carmen Owens, 61, of 1801 Fairlane, Jonesboro, driver of a 1964 Ford; her granddaughter, Tina Dian West, 11, of Harrisburg, Route 1; and Norman Earl Nichols, 36, of 117 Stone, Lake City, driver of the tractor-trailer grain truck. Mrs. Owens was pronouned dead on arrival at Craighead Memorial Hospital. The girl was killed instantly. Nicholas was killed instantly. His body was pinned in the twisted wreckage of the truck cab for more than 90 minutes. Williams and State Trooper Harry Bloodworth said the collision occurred when Mrs. Owens attempted to cross the highway from east to west and drove into the path of the southbound truck, which was carrying a load of soybeans. The collision occurred at the inter-section of Greenfield Road and the state highway. Teh car was knocked some 100 feet by the impact and came to rest on its wheels on the east shoulder of the pavement. Miss West was thrown from the vehicle. Williams said Nichols apparently lost control of the truck when he attempted to brake to avoid the collision. The tuck jackknifed and skidded more than 100 feet, coming to wrest on its top. Rescue squads from Harrisburg Volunteer Fire Department and Jonesboro Fire Department worked for more than 90 minutes to free Nichols' crushed body from the cab.
