Submitted by: Kathy Pitts ellen@oio.net ------------------------------------------------------------------------- POLK MAN DROWNS IN COSSATOT A Baker Community man was the victim in a Howard County drowning Wednesday afternoon, bringing the Polk County EMS and Civil Defense divers to the Howard County tragedy. Dale Thomas Rose, 26, drowned in Clay Lake, an eddy of water on the Cossatot River. He reportedly was swimming there with his brother. The Polk County Sheriff's Office received the call at 5:30 p.m., and forwarded the information to Howard County Authorities. Dan Watts of Emergency Medical Service and divers from the Polk county Civil Defense rushed to the scene. The body had been recovered from the water, where it is reported Rose drowned at a depth of about 12 feet, when the rescuers arrived. The body was transfered to Geyer-Quillin Funeral Home. In addition to Watts, divers arriving on the scene from the Polk County civil Defense included John Barnes, John Puckett, Gail Howard, Monty Warren, and John Gordon. Note* Darlene Winship Rose's husband Kathy Pitts Collection of Josephine (Bohanan) Smith Obituary DALE THOMAS ROSE Funeral service for Dale Thomas Rose, 27-year-old resident of the Baker Community, was held Friday afternoon in the Baker Church with Rev. F.R. Lucky officiating. Interment was in the Baker Cemetery under the direction of the Geyer -Quillin Funeral Home. Pallbearers were Jimmie Lyle, Wayne Sparks, Rondell Martin, Jimmy Sparks, Terry Bagley and Howard Bagley. Rose was born Jan. 14, 1948, at Wickes and died June 4 near Wickes. He spent his entire life in Wickes and Grannis. He was a member of the Baker Pentecostal Church of God. He married Darlene Winship at Hatfield on May 29, 1970. She survives him. Other survivors are one son, Douglas, and one daughter, Denette, both of the home; his mother, Mrs. Rita Rose of Grannis; three brothers, Raymond of Van Nuys, Calif., Lester of Garland, Texas, and Norman of Grannis; and five sisters, Mrs. Irene Milam, Mrs. Janice Baker and Mrs. Alice McKinzie, all of Grannis, Mrs. Elsie Evans of Hatton and Mrs. Doris Harp of Manistee, Mich.
