All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm *********************************************************** Burch Cemetery headstone transcriptions (spelled Birch on old USGS map) This site is an historic cemetery containing at least 60 graves. It is situated on a sideslope immediatly adjacent to and on the north side of Pope County Road 20. The site has been cleared of small brush and saplings this year, probably just before Memorial Day. It retains hog wire fence remants on 3 sides. It has 14 marked headstones and these have been keyed to the site sketch map. Most of the graves are marked with just fieldstone headstones and a few also have smaller fieldstone footstones. The cemetery is surrounded by woods. The opening measures 108 feet parallel with the road and the same upslope along the west side, 100 feet along the top (north), and ninety six feet on the east side (all measured with tape). Several of the graves have plastic flowers recently put on them. USGS Quadrangle: Simpson, 7 ½', 1980. T.10N., R.19W., Section 21. Surnames in the cemetery are, Blount, Burch, Hogan, Gooch, Nutt, and Sanders. Burial dates range from 1881 to 1953. Headstone inscriptions Keyed to 3 PP 619 sketch map A. Pedistal stone marked BURCH. B. Unpolished granite headstone setting on a fieldstone base. Top of headstone has a Masonic emblem and is marked "T.M.BURCH / Born Feb.16, 1884 / Died Dec.26, 1903". C. Concrete headstone with resting lamb on the top. Marked "Sarah J. / Dau. Of / J.M. & E.C. / Gooch / Born / Feb.28, 1890 / Died Sep.22, 1891". D. Concrete headstone marked"Felix Blount / Born / July 22, 1867 / Died April 12, 1897 / Dear Father, Mother / Brother or Sister / Weep Not For Me, from / You a Son and Brother / Christ Doth Call". E. Concrete headstone with floral decoration near the top. Marked "G.W. Hogan / Oct.24, 1862 / Apr.25, 1943 / Death Is Only A Shadow / Across The Path / To Heaven". F. Concrete headstone marked "Sallie Bell / Hogan / 2-9-1877 / 10-30-1953 / Gone to a Brighter / Home". G. Granite headstone and footstone. Partially poslished granite headstone marked "Bill Nutt / May 10, 1850 / Jan.16, 1937 / AT REST". J. Concrete headstone decorated with Peas in a Pod motiff near top. Marked "John A.T. / Son of / R.M. & M.A. Nutt / Born / Nov.16, 1874 / Died / Oct.20, 1882 / 7 yrs. 11 ms 4ds". Writing along the base was unintellibible. K. Concrete headstone with flying dove motiff near top. Marked "L.C. Dau of / R.M. & M.A. / Nutt / Born / Sept. 2, 1890 / Died Sep. 9, 1891 / SLEEP DARLING". L. Concrete headstone with curled sleeping lamb motiff. Marked "R.M. Son of / R.M. & M.A. / Nutt / Born Apr. 5, 1893 / Died Aug. 12, 1893 / GONE TO REST". Footstone marked "R.M. NUTT". M.
