[Two photos are included with this report.] Entrance to the Goates Cemetery http://www.usgwarchives.net/ar/pope/images/gate00.jpg John Leonard Goates, circa 1870-80 http://www.usgwarchives.net/ar/pope/images/goatesjl.jpg According to family history, the Goates Cemetery, near the Illinois Bayou, began when the body of an unknown soldier was found and buried by two Goates women during the Civil War. He was never identified. The land was later deeded for use as a Public Cemetery. In addition to the graves with markers and headstones, there are 87 unmarked graves with native stone. The cemetery is fenced and well kept with a large iron gate reading "GOATES CEMETERY" at the entrance. The patriarch of the family, John Leonard Goates ( born 1810, Fairfield County, South Carolina; died September 26, 1881 in Scottsville, Pope County, Arkansas ), is buried in the cemetery. He was the first Goates to homestead and deed land on Goates Mountain near Scottsville, Pope, Arkansas around 1841. These cemetery records have genealogical notes that are provided hopefully explaining where they appear in Goates history. From the earliest records, our Goates family comes from Prussia. The earliest known ancestor was Johan Bartold Guesse ( b. 1706 in Evangelisch, Exter, Westfallen, Pruessen ). His son, Henrick Welhiem Guesse / Guess / Goats / Goates ( b. June 27, 1734 Pruessen d. 1790 Fairfield, SC ) arrived in CharlesTown, South Carolina aboard the ship Brittania on October 5, 1766. He was granted a 300 acre Plantation as a Royal Grant on April 12, 1767 by King George III of England. His son, George Guess / Goats / Goates ( b. 1770 Fairfield, SC and d. March 22, 1856 Giles, TN ), produced the patriarch of our family in Arkansas, John Leonard Goates ( b. 1810 Fairfield Co, SC and d. September 26, 1881 in Scottsville, Pope, Arkansas ) John L. Goates deeded land in Pope County, Arkansas in 1841 after migrating from Giles, Tennessee to Tishamingo County, Mississippi to Searcy County, Arkansas to Pope County. The name has had several spellings and pronunciations. The name change to Goats / Goates is actually recorded in a Tennessee land record of an 1818 Sale of Land in Fairfield County, SC to William Ashley in which it states George Goates inherited from his Father, Henry Goats alias Henry Guess/Guise land, and that he ( George Guess / Goats / Goates ) is living in Tennessee. The names contained in this document were researched by Wayne Goates, a direct descendent of John Leonard Goates from Bible records, Census, Marriage, Death, obituary notices, and verification by family members He can be contacted as follows: © January 1, 2008 Wayne Goates 8302 W.
