Bowden Rev. Allen F. Bowden, 78, died in his home, 1815 Vine street this morning (March 24, 1938) at 10:30 o'clock. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday afternoon at 2:30 in Central Methodist church by Rev. D.A. Chisholm, pastor. Burial will be in Greenleaf cemetery with Austin-Morris Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Rev. Mr. Bowden was born in November 17, 1859, in Lawrenceburg, Tennessee, and came to Brown county in 1889. He was ordained as a minister in the Methodist Episcopal Church South at an early age and was pastor of a number of churches in this section. He taught school in several rural communities of Brown county. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge. He is survived by his wife and the following children: M.W. Bowden, Brownwood; E.H. Bowden, San Angelo; Mrs. D.C. Claitor, Temple; Mrs. J.H. Ferris, Toledo, Ohio; Mrs. B.F. Alford, Ingleside; Mrs. E.W. Jackson, Houston; Glenn Bowden, Brownwood; Burl Bowden, Refugio; and Carroll Bowden, Ingleside. Two Brothers, Marvin Tilden Bowden, Brownwood, and W.J. Bowden, Abilene; and two sisters, Mrs. P.V. Services are under the direction of Davis-Morris Funeral Home. Mr. Bowden died Friday (Jan 19,1963) in a San Antonio hospital. He was born in December (10) 1884, in Russellville, Ark. Mr. Bowden lived in Brownwood until 1940 when he moved to San Antonio. He was a retired civil service worker. Mr. Bowden was a charter member of the Central Methodist Church in Brownwood. Survivors include two sons, Rex W. Bowden of Austin, and Milton Bowden of San Antonio one brother E.H.Bowden (Eldred Hunter) of Killeen; three half-brothers, Glen Bowden of Brownwood, Carroll Bowden of Corpus Christi, and Burl Bowden of Ingleside; one sister, Mrs Stella V. Claitor of Denver. Colo. Three halfsisters Mrs E.W. Jackson (Ozella Ray), Mrs H.J. Ferris (Emma Mae) of Brownwood, and Mrs. Frank Alford (Vera Elizabeth) of Ingleside. His step-mother, Mrs. A.F. Bowden of Ingleside, and three grandchildren. William J. Bowden (Vera's Uncle Billy) Word has been received here of the death of W.J. Bowden, 71 year-old retired furniture dealer who died in Abilene June 1941 and was buried there Friday. He was born Jan. 4, 1870 in Tennessee, moved to Brown county at the age of 21, lived from 1918 to 1923 in Eastland and in Abilene since. Survivors are his wife and four children; a brother Marvin Tilden Bowden of Brownwood, and two sisters. (wife Eula Mallow. 1 daughter Exa lived in New Mexico, but died in Abilene, Tx. 1 son Grady was a druggist in Abilene) Eldred Bowden, 82 Services for Eldred H. Bowden, 82, of Kings Court Drive will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in Davis-Morris Funeral Home with the Rev. Ed Garrett officiating. Burial will be in Greenleaf Cemetery. Mr. Bowden, a retired employee of the Brownwood Bulletin, died at 10:30 .m. Thursday April 13, 1972 at Garland after an illness of six months Prior to his association with the Bulletin, Mr. Bowden had published newspapers at Georgetown, Gothwaite and Mullin. He had been a resident of Brownwood most of his life and had lived at garland the past four months. Born Sept 19, 1889 in Arkansas, he married Myrtice Buford June 15, 1916 at Salado and was a charter member of the Central United Methodist Church at Brownwood. Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Mrs. Olive Perry and Mrs. M.O. McLeroy (Elizabeth) both of Garland; one son, Eldred Bowden Jr. of Odessa; three brothers, Burl Bowden of Ingleside, Carroll Bowden of Corpus Christi and Glen Bowden of Brownwood; four sisters, Mrs. E.W. Jackson of Dallas, Mrs Frank Alford of Ingleside, Mrs. D.C. Claitor of Denver, Colo, and Mrs. Hobert Ferris of Brownwood; Two grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews. Glenn Bowden Services for Glenn A. Bowden 85, of Brownwood will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Davis-Morris Funeral Home with the Rev. Robert Cavanaugh and the Rev. Bob Sarles officiating. Burial will be in the Jones Chapel Cemetery. He died Wednesday afternoon (Sept 10, 1991) in a Dallas hospital. Born May 14, 1906, in Brown County, he had lived most of his life in Brownwood. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and was retired from the Exxon Oil Company. He was a member of the Central United Methodist Church, a member of the Friendly Fellows Bible Class, and member of the American Legion, the V.F.W. and the D.A.V. Survivors include his wife; one (adopted) daughter, Mrs. Richmond (Kaye) Wilkins of Richardson; one brother, Carroll Bowden of Corpus Christi; one sister, Vera Alford of Ingleside; one grandson; one granddaughter; and a number of nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends at Davis-Morris Funeral Home from 7-8 p.m. today. Pierce Bowden Legion Comrades Honor P.M. Bowden at Funeral Today The funeral services for Pierce Bowden, whose death occurred at San Angelo Sunday (Jan. 10, 1926), were conducted this morning at 10 o'clock at the home of his father, Rev. A. F. Bowden, 1815 Vine Street, followed by interment in Greenleaf Cemetery. Rev. L.L. Felder, pastor of the Central Methodist church, conducted the funeral service, and was assisted by Rev. H. K. Agee. Active pall bearers were J. F. Mitchell, C. A. McNeil, Lon L. Smith, Dan L. Garrett, A. J. Brooks, E. C. Stewart, representing Isham A. Smith Post, American Legion, and all other Legionnaires and ex-service men were included as honorary pall bearers. At the cemetery simple honors were paid their deceased comrade by the Legionnaires, with a portion of their impressive burial service. A large concourse of friends attended the funeral, and the floral expressions of love and sympathy were unusually beautiful. (Wife: Vesta Grace Hoyt Bowden) P.M. Bowden P.M. Bowden 36 (33) years of age, died Sunday in San Angelo following an illness of several years which was contracted in the World War. Mr. Bowden was an invalid and has been confined to his home since being discharged from the army after the war. He was a Brown county citizen up to some two years ago when he moved to San Angelo to take up his residence. He was a World War Veteran and a member of the American Legion. The American Legion will have charge of interment in the Greenleaf cemetery Wednesday morning at 10 o'clock. The remains will be shipped to Brownwood tonight and removed to the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. A.F. Bowden , at 1815 Vine Street. Deceased is survived by his wife, his parents, and five brothers and five sisters. The brothers are E.H., Marvin, Carroll, Glenn, and Burl Bowden, all of Brownwood; his sisters are Mrs. D.C. Claitors of Temple, Mrs. H.J. Ferris, Beaverdam, Ohio, and Mrs. Frank Alford of Rising Star and Misses Ina and Ozella Bowden of Brownwood. Funeral services will be held Wednesday morning form the residence at 815 Vine St. with Rev. L.L. Felder in charge. Internment will be made in the Greenleaf cemetery with the American Legion in charge. Funeral services were first announced for Tuesday but were postponed until Wednesday morning to await the arrival of a sister, Mrs. Ferris of Ohio who will arrive in Brownwood Tuesday night. Mae Ferris, 89 (Emma Mae Bowden) Services for Mae Ferris, 89 of Brownwood will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Davis-Morris Funeral Home with the Rev. John Fourie officiating. Burial will be in Greenleaf Cemetery. She died at 6 a.m. Sunday (June 22, 1986) at Baylor Hospital in Dallas. Mrs. Ferris was born Feb 20, 1897 in Brownwood and was a homemaker and member off Central United Methodist Church and Eastern Star. She was married to Hobert J. Ferris at South Bend, Ind. March 1, 1920. He preceded her in death. Survivors include a son, (adopted) Ronald L. Ferris of Dallas; a sister, Mrs. B. F. Alford of Ingleside; two brothers, Glynn (Glenn) Bowden of Brownwood and Carroll Bowden of Corpus Christi; and a number of nieces and nephews. The family request memorial be made to Central United Methodist Church or to any children's home. Carroll W. Bowden Carroll W. Bowden, 89 died Thursday, Feb. 17 in a Corpus Christi hospital. He moved to Ingleside in 1934 where he was employed by Humble Pipeline Co. and lived there until the late 1950s. He was an active member of both the Ingleside United Methodist Church and First Methodist Church in Corpus Christi. He was also an active member of the Masonic Lodge, where he received a 50-year service pin, and was a member of the Exxon Annuity Club. He was preceded in death by his wife, Gladys Bowden and son, (adopted) Peter H. Bowden, who was killed in the Korean War. Survivors include his sister, Vera Bowden Alford of Ingleside; his sister-in-law Laurie Bowden of Ingleside; numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 19, at Ingleside United Methodist Church with Rev. Jim Roberts and Rev. Lowell Ryan officiating. Burial followed at Prairie View Cemetery. Charlie Marshall Funeral Homes & Crematory, Aransas Pass. Burl Rankin Bowden Ingleside---Burl Rankin Bowden, 71 passed away March 24, 1983 after a short illness. He was a native of Brownwood, Texas, and had been a resident of Ingleside since 1942.At the time of his death; he was vice-president, cashier, and secretary to the Board of Directors at the First National Bank of Ingleside. He was a charter member of the Refugio Methodist Church and had been an active member of the Ingleside United Methodist Church since 1942. He was presently serving on the Board of Trustees and Treasurer of the Methodist Men's group and had served in various other offices of the church. He was a member of the Ingleside Rotary Club and was a Paul Harris Fellow. Survivors include his wife, Annie Laurie New Bowden of Ingleside; one son, Joe Allen Bowden of Missouri City; two daughters, Betty Burl Zieger of Portland, and Carolyn Ann Hughes of Ingleside; six grandchildren, Cara, Laura, and Brent Bowden of Missouri City. Craig and Kristi Hughes of Ingleside, and Burl Bowden Smith of Portland; three sisters, Mrs. Stella Claitor of Livingston, Texas, Mrs. Mae Ferris of Brownwood, and Mrs. Frank Alford of Ingleside; two brothers, Glenn Bowden of Brownwood, Texas, and Carroll W. Bowden of Corpus Christi, and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted at 4 p.m. Saturday, March 26, in the Ingleside United Methodist Church with Rev. Ray Boykin, Rev. W.T. Bowden Gone to His Reward April 2, 1914 there passed from the earthly works of life, at Rising Star, Texas. A true and tried citizen, whoes integrity and Christian life was never questioned. He was born in Lawrence County Tenn., in 1837, lived there to manhood, when he came to Pope Co. Ark., before the Civil War. He entered the army at Fort Smith, Ark. July, 1862. Belonged to Company H. under Captain Peeler, Kings Ridgement Fgaan's Brigade division. Served first under General Windmon, next under General Holmes, and when the war closed was under General Price. Soon after the war he moved back to Tenn. and remained until 1870, when he moved back to Pope Co., Ark. Located near Bowden Chapel where he served as S.S. Supt. 18 years in succession. He was a subscriber to the first paper published in Russellville, Ark. He moved to Brown Co., Texas in 1890 and remained most of the time since, till death claimed him for his victim, at Rising Star, where he has lived near two years. W.S. Bowden was a man of strong convictions, resolute in his purposes, and his aim was to seek correct information on all subjects of vital interest to humanity. Tenderness and sympathy were shown in everyday life, and he was solicitous in regard to the welfare of others. He was an active member of the Methodist Church most of his life, and was often heard to pray for his children, grand children, neighbors, and our rulers in state and church. He always acknowleged his faults , and confessed when necessary. Many loved ones look through their tears, and beyond the silent tomb to the happy day when we shall meet again, never to say good-by. He leaves his aged companion, seven children, and several grand children to mourn their loss. Let us be faithful and true to God, and in just a little while all can meet again in the sweet beyond. He was laid to rest Friday evening in the Rising Star cemetery, under the auspecies of the Masonic Fraternity, of which he was a member. One who knew him over half a century. Ozella Jackson, 72 Dallas-Former Brownwood resident Ozella Bowden Jackson, 72, died Feb. 9 in Dallas following a lengthy illness. Mrs. Bowden was a graduate of Brownwood High school and attended Howard Payne. She was the daughter of the late Rev. Allen Bowden and Hattie Carroll Bowden. Survivors include her husband, E.W. Jackson; a son Donald W. Jackson; a daughter, Mrs. John A. Severin; three brothers, Glenn Bowden of Brownwood, Carroll Bowden and Burl Bowden; three sisters, Mrs. H.J. Ferris of Brownwood, Mrs. D.C. Claitor, and Mrs. B.F. Alford; and five grandchildren. Ina Lee Bowden Miss Ina Lee Bowden died at noon today in the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. A. F. Bowden, 1815 Vine Street. Death came after an illness, extending over a period of several years. The deceased had suffered more than words can tell during the twenty-one years of her life, and although her presence in the home will be greatly missed by her loved ones, death came as a relief to the sufferer, who is now at rest with her Master. Stella Claitor Livingston-Stella Bowden Claitor, 92 died July 23, 1984 in Livingston. Born Oct. 3, 1891 in Brown County, she was a longtime resident of Temple, Tx., where she was a member of the First Methodist Church and the Vashti Chapter of the Eastern Star. Her husband David C Claitor, preceeded her in death in 1968. Survivors include a son, David F. Claitor of Onalaska; a daughter, Mrs. Ruth Rosso of Vancover, Wash.; three grandchildren, Diana Claitor-Elliott of Austin, Charles Eberhart of Irving and Mrs. Toni Hartung of Portland, Ore. And several great grandchildren. Also surviving are two sisters, Mrs Mae Ferris and Mrs. Vera Alford; two brothers, Carroll Bowden and Glenn Bowden, and a number of nieces and nephews. Graveside services and internment were in Hillcrest Cemetery in Temple, July 25. Hewett Funeral Directors, Temple was in charge of arrangements. Nora Carroll Hattie Dunlap Carroll Bowden's sister-in-law Nora Mattie Carroll, 88, of Burnet and formerly of Rising Star, died at 12:40 pm. Sunday (May 1, 1983) at Oaks Nursing Home in Burnet. Services were at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Rising Star First Baptist Church. The Rev. Dick Williams, of First Baptist officiated. Burial was in the Rising Star Cemetery under the direction of Higginbotham Funeral Home. Born June 14, 1994, in Alabama, she married Charles F. Carroll. He died in 1969. She was a homemaker and a Baptist. Survivors include one son, C.M. Carroll of Rising Star; two daughter, Delphine Duke of Burnet and Treva Mae DeLoach of Cedar Hill two sisters, Annie Selman of Rising Star and Luna Smith of Brownfield; six grandchildren; and eight great grandchildren. Charles "Mutt" Carroll Rising Star-Charles M. "Mutt" Carroll,80, former mayor and city manager, died Sunday, January 12, 1997 at a Brownwood Hospital. Services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, January 14, 1997 at Higginbotham Funeral Home Chapel, James McLeod officiated. Burial was in the Rising Star Cemetery. He was born in Okra and lived in Rising Star all his life. He was a retired service station owner and a Navy veteran of World War II. He was a member of First Baptist Church, Masonic Lodge 608 and American Legion. He was a member of the school board for 12 years, serving as president and secretary. He married LaVerne Claborn in 1940. Survivors include his wife , LaVerne of Rising Star; two sons, Charles Glen Carroll of Tolar and James Bradley Carroll of Cypress; two sisters, Dalphine Duke of Burnet and Treva DeLoach of Cedar Hill; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Lt. P. H. Bowden Killed in Korea Lt. Peter H. Bowden, son of Mr. and Mrs. C.W. Bowden of Ingleside, was killed in Korea October 4, according to advice received by his parents Saturday night. A reserve officer, Lt. Bowden was serving with the 5th Regiment of the First Calvary Division. Lt. Bowden had only been in Korea a short time. With his wife, the former Francis Franklin of Ingleside, he visited his parents in mid-August before going to California to embark for the far East about September 1. His wife was residing with her parent, Mr. and Mrs. J. L. Franklin at Sabinal during his overseas duty. A former Ingleside Mustang backfield star., Bowden graduated from Ingleside High School in 1939. He attended A. M. College before entering military service during World War II. Following his discharge he operated a service station in Aransas Pass for a time before returning to A. & M. He was in school there when recalled to active duty. He would have observed his twenty-ninth birthday October 6. He was a member of the Ingleside Methodist Church. Besides his widow and parents, he is survived by his maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Haynes of Houston, and his paternal grandmother, Mrs. A.F. Bowden of Brownwood. Brice M. Carroll Brice M. Carroll, 86, of Abilene, died Saturday, Sept. 19, 1992 in a local hospital. Services were at 3 p.m. Monday at the Higginbotham Funeral home chapel in rising Star with the Rev. Darrell Dossey officiating. Burial was in Rising Star Cemetery. Born in Rising Star April 21, 1906, he married Oreada Carroll May 3, 1983, in Abilene. He was retired from Exxon Oil Company and was a Baptist. Survivors include his wife, Oreada Carroll of Abilene; and a brother Loyd Carroll of Panhandle.
