His father, John Martin Jr & family were on their way to Cape Geradeau Co, Missouri. He had purchased land near Jackson. They had come from Washington Co, Georgia where they had lived many years. Jared was last born child. Just 2 short years later in 1808 John Martin Jr died, leaving 5 living sons and 1 daughter. In 1817 Allen and James Hutcheson Martin moved to Arkansas Territory and 4 yrs later Jared Carswell Martin joined his brothers near Little Rock. He was 17 when his mother gave him a $10 goldpiece and mule and let him go. He delivered mail from Little Rock to Arkansas Post and as it required an overnight camp he had to keep a large fire going to keep away the wolves. He later purchased land in Mabelvale area (some of which remains in Martin family desc. possession today in 1998). he met the Douglass family at church and later fell in love with their daughter, Mary Douglass. On 25 Jan 1827 they were married. Jared and Mary had large family of 8 children: (1)John Douglass b-21 Jun 1828 & d-3 NKov 1833 (2) James Allen Martin b-17 Oct 1830 & d-10 Aug 1905 (3) Mary b-3 Feb 1830 & d-5 Feb 1833 (4) Elizabeth Allen b-3 Sep 1834 & d-27 Aug 1868 (5) William Andrew b-13 Aug 1837 & d-29 Aug 1910 (6) Sarah Belle b-28 Jul 1840 d-10 July 1852 (7)Emily Sophia b-15 Mar 1842 & d-1868 (8) Mary Douglass b-15 Jul 1845 & d-30 Dec 1926. All but John Douglass Martin were born on the home plantation in Fouche Twp in Mabelvale. They had very comfortable home Jared and Mary joined the Christian Church in 1837. He was an elder of church and taught Sunday school for many years. He was a Democrat and treasurer of Pulaski Co from 1840-42. He was appointed, by Governor to office of State Treasurer 1842-43 and later elected to office thru 1845. He also represented the legislature from 1840-42. He was a very successful farmer and made bountiful living for his family. He sent his children to best schools in area. He was a public spirited and patriotic person...kept up with current issues and was fearful of internal disorder in country...fearing war among states. He died in 1857 at age of 51 yrs. As he had feared, four years later the war between states began, in 1861. Like many, his wife Mary hated war, but did what she could to help. I am descended from his son James Allen Martin who married Huldah Tracy Martin. One day I will continue on with James Allen's Life and his son Frank Douglass Martin, my grandfather and my mother Marcile Meredith (Martin) Eagle Compton. Much of imfo was taken from Mary Douglass Martin's (child #8) family history, written in 1905. ================================================================================
