Glenn Shockey Killed (Source: The Mena weekly star. (Mena, Ark.) 1904-1977: March 18, 1920, Image 2) Kansas City, March 10.- Glenn Shockey, cashier of the South Side bank located at 39th and Main streets, in the heart of the residence district of Kansas City was killed during a sensational attempt by four bandits to hold up the bank yesterday. An official of the bank saw the four men reach for their weapons as they approached the door of the bank and attempted to close the door. One of the bandits fired and the shot grazed the official's head. An attempt by the janitor to assist in preventing the entrance of the men resulted in further shots being fired. One of these killed Shockey, who was behind the counter. The bandits then fled without getting near the counter. They made their escape in a motor car. The South Side bank was held up February 12, by a single bandit who escaped with $4,000 in cash. As the four men forced their way thru the doorway of the bank, Henry Strohmeyer, bookkeeper, dropped behind his desk and with a revolver opened fire on the robbers. Shockey likewise is said to have fired a revolver from his cage. As the robbers leaped into their motor car, a shot struck the last man and he crumpled. His companions dragged him into the car as it sped away. A motor car salesman gave chase and followed the bandits' car for several blocks thru the residence district but gradually was left behind. Maurice J. McNellis, treasurer, was slightly wounded when the bandits, opened fire as they entered the bank. He was unable to say whether his wound was from a revolver bullet or whether he was knocked down by one of the bandits. Four bullets struck Shockey and he died within a few minutes. Four men and two women, one of the men suffering from a bullet wound in the hip, were being held by the police tonight in connection with the attempted robbery. Although one of the men held has been identified by the bank janitor, it was said by the police tonight that little credence is placed in the identification. The men arrested were riding in a small sedan, while the automobile in which the bandits escaped was a touring car. The arrest followed so soon after the fight in the bank that the police believe the bandits would hardly have had time to change cars. Attempted Bank Robbery Update (Source: The log cabin Democrat.
