All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm *********************************************************** December 11, 1966 Arkansas Gazette LR Dentist, Ex-editor, Dies at 55 Dr. James Valdemar Gunn, age 55 of 11 Diana Drive, a Little Rock dentist and editor emeritus of the Arkansas Dental Journal, died Saturday. Dr. Gunn was born at Earle. A son of the late Mr. and Mrs. J.W. Gunn and was graduated from the University of Arkansas in 1936. He then attended the University of Arkansas School of Medicine fore a year, after which he taught comparative anatomy and biology at Ocachita College at Arkadelphia for a year. He received his doctor of dental science degree in 1942 from Baylor University School of Dentistry. He served in the armed forces from 1942 until 1946, when he set up his dentistry practice in Little Rock. Dr. Gunn was named editor of the Arkansas Dental Journal in 1953, and served in that capacity until April 6, 1965, when he became editor emeritus--the first man to be so honoured. In 1964 the Dental Association had named him its Man of the Year. He was a member of the American Association of Dental Editors, the Arkansas Academy of Science and the American Society of Dentistry for Children, and was an associate staff member of the Arkansas Baptist Medical Center and St. Vincent Infirmary. He was a Scottish Rite Mason and a member of the Scimitar Shrine. He also was a member of the Pulaski Heights Presbyterian Church and was a past president of the Men's Bible Class. Survivors are his wife Mrs. Patricia Irby Gunn, a son James Patrick Gunn of Crooked Creek, Alaska; a daughter Mrs. Jill Lindsey of Little Rock; two brothers, Grover Gunn of Joiner and W.T. Gunn of West Memphis and a grandchild. Funeral arrangements will be announced by Griffin-Leggett.
