Quigley, formerly of St. Joseph, was found in a creek two miles south of Hot Springs, Ark., yesterday. The police think he committed suicide, although there was an ugly wound in the head. This may have been sustained by striking his head on a rock in jumping into the stream. Mark Quigley was cashier of the Tootle, Wheeler & Motter Dry Goods Company a number of years. He was unusually intelligent and he was regarded as a young man of exceptional promise. Dissipation wrecked his life, however, and he finally lost his position with the wholesale house. He left St. Joseph about four years ago. Quigley was a student at Christian Brothers College and his family was well known and prominent in Catholic circles here. His father, John Quigley, was city engineer about thirty years ago. John and Joseph Quigley, brothers of Mark are interested in the Ackerman-Quigley Printing Company in Kansas City. They were in the real estate business here at one time. The mother died in this city a number of years ago. The family lived for many years on Church street between Twelvth and Thirteenth streets. Arkansa Gazette (Little Rock, AR) Sat Jun 24, 1905 pg 2 SUICIDE BY DROWNING M. F. Quigley of St. Joseph, Mo., Ended His Life Near Hot Springs. Special to the Gazette: Hot Springs, June 23.--With his head and shoulders lying in the shallow water, the dead body of M. F. Quigley of St. Joseph, Mo., was found in Gulpha creek, two miles east of this city, this morning by two boys, who were playing along the banks. The coroner was notified and the body was removed to the McCafferty morgue, where an inquest was held this afternoon, the jury returning a verdict of suicide by drowning. From the fact that Quigley's head was badly bruised the theory of murder was advanced, but it developed at the inquest that deceased informed several persons that he was tired of life and intended to take his life. His family in Missouri are wealthy, but drink is said to have absorbed his life so completely, and all efforts to overcome the desire had proven such failures, that Quigley decided there was only one way to stop, and in this last act of his life he was successful. Deceased was an expert accountant, J. A. Quigley, a Kansas City business man, is his brother.
