Pallbearers Dwayne Kelch, Richard Kelch, Fred Ridenhour, Shawn Ridenhour. =================================================================== The Waldron News 12 April 2000 ALLYE-MERLE BORDEN Allye-Merle Borden died at home on April 5, 2000. Almost 100 years old, the last third of her life was spent in Leisure World. She was born on July 4, 1900 in Waldron, Arkansas. In 1921, she married Philip Borden, an oil company engineer in oil-boom Kansas. Her son, Dr. Philip Summers Borden (now a resident of Leisure World) was born there. Beginning in 1929, the family lived in Kansas City, MO, for 28 years, during the last portion of which Mrs. Borden was a purchasing executive for the city of Kansas City, honored by the mayor at her retirement. Mrs. Borden has regularly been active in churches, and a member of the Geneva Presbyterian Church since moving to Leisure World. Funeral arrangements and a small chapel service are by the O'Connor Laguna Hills Mortuary. He was a retired 1st Lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force, and a Presbyterian. Memorial service was at 12:30 p.m. Friday, March 31, 2000 at the U.S. National Cemetery in Fort Smith, Arkansas followed with burial under the direction of Martin Funeral Home of Waldron, Arkansas. He is survived by his wife, Delma of the home; two daughters, Diane Henderson of Denver, CO and Teresa Kelly of Waldron, AR; six sons, John Young of California, James Young of Denver, CO, Matthew Randle and Steve Randle both of Waldron, AR, Joe Young and Ricky Young; two sisters, Jerry Lucas of Savannah, GA and Gail Thee of Atlanta, GA; 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. =================================================================== The Waldron News 12 April 2000 ALEXANDER LLOYD NOLAND Alexander Lloyd Noland was born September 20, 1927 in San Diego, California and died March 19, 2000 in Coos Bay, Oregon. Al was well liked wherever he lived and worked. His wife Maxine, his daughter Lynette and his four sons Larry, Michael, Patrick and Steven as well as 10 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren survive him. Two younger brothers, Charles and Richard who both live in California, also survive him. Al honorably served 8 years in the U.S. Navy. After his Navy Career he worked in various sectors of the Defense industry retiring from Lockheed Missiles and Space Corp. after 17 years of service. His employment with Lockheed took him to England and Scotland where he consuled with Royal Navy regarding missile employment aboard their submarine fleets. Al and Maxine lived in our community for about 9 years until They moved to Coos Bay in 1994 to be closer to their family. Al was active in community affairs and served on the Waldron City Council. He owned a small engine repair shop that he operated out of his home. Al taught the Men's Sunday school class at the Methodist Church. He also served on the Coos Bay Finance Committee and Water Board. Al was an active member of the Masons all of his life. He will be remembered for his love of his garden and the Beautiful flowers he grew and gave to the community and friends. =================================================================== The Waldron News 12 April 2000 CHARLIE AARON FRYAR Charlie Aaron Fryar, 75, of Waldron, Arkansas died Friday, April 7, 2000 in a Fort Smith hospital. He was a retired road grader operator, veteran of WWII, a Baptist and a C.C.C. worker. He was a loving father and grandfather and was married to his wife Daisy for 48 years. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Pam Richardson. She was retired from Tyson Foods in Waldron, AR. James Berry Cox, Jr., 83, of Waldron died Wednesday, April 12, 2000 in Waldron. He was a naval aviator during World War II, a cattleman, real estate agent and editor and co-owner of the Advance Reporter newspaper. He was a founding member of the board of directors of Scott County Bank. Funeral services were at 2:00 p.m. Friday, April 14 in Waldron United Methodist Church with burial at Duncan Cemetery under the direction of Martin Funeral Homes of Waldron and Mansfield. He is survived by two daughters, Katharine Wilson of Batesville and Claudette Kleinke of Portland, OR; one son, James O. Cox of Greenwood and five grandchildren, Laura Day of New York City, Katherine Cox and James Benjamin Cox of Greenwood and James B. Kleinke and Erin Kleinke of Oregon. He was a lifelong resident of Waldron and the youngest of 11 children born to James B. Cox and Samantha Davenport Cox. He was a lifelong member of Waldron United Methodist Church. He attended Hendrix College and graduated from Oklahoma City University, where he met his wife of 40 years, Josephine, who predeceased him. Pallbearers were Bob Lewis, Bob Smoot, Scotty Jones, Roy Franklin, Joe Huie and Henry Hicks. ======================================================================= The Waldron News 26 April 2000 ROBERT "BOB" LAFEYETTE AMMONS Robert "Bob" Lafeyette Ammons, 65, of Plainview, Texas died Friday, April 21, 2000 in Northwest Texas Hospital in Amarillo, Texas. He was born March 14, 1935 in Waldron and was married December 22, 1956 to Virginia Sammann. He was preceded in death by a brother, J.Y. Ammons. Funeral service was Tuesday, April 25 at Wood-Dunning Colonial Chapel with Pastor Jan Horne officiating. He was assisted by Pastor Thomas Baker, Pastor of Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church. Burial was at Plainview Memorial Park. He is survived by his wife, Virginia Ammons of Plainview, TX; three daughters and sons-in-law, Beverly and Bert Wall, Roxanne and Dale Williams and Staci Ammons all of Plainview, TX; three sisters, Lavoyne Craig of Waldron, AR, Evelyn Vaughan of Roland, OK and Marlene Blatt of Ft. Smith, AR; four grandchildren, Amber and Cole Williams and Brant and Brock Wall. He grew up in Waldron, Arkansas and went to Plainview at an early age. He was a member of Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tulia, TX. He owned and operated Robert L. Ammons Trucking and was a Contract U.S. Mail Carrier. He was born at Maynard, Arkansas. He was a Navy veteran of W.W.II and a member of the American Legion of Wildwood. He is survived by his wife Maudie; four daughters, Dixie McGuire of Tuckahoe, NJ, Nina Kennedy of Dupo, IL, Leatrica Macomber of Villas, NJ and Janice Worrell of Seaford, DE; one brother, Luther Bailey of Waldron; one sister, Betty Rose of Waldron, AR; 12 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Donald Diehl, Jr., his parents, Herman and Dixie Bailey of Waldron and a brother, Gilbert Bailey of California. WILLIAMS Melbern D. Williams, 84, died Wednesday, April 26, 2000 at Desert Samaritan Hospital in Mesa, Arizona. Mr. Williams was born July 25, 1915 in Waldron, Arkansas, the son of Dennis and Dora Farnsworth Williams. He served in World War II in the Air Force as a flight engineer on a B-24 and completed 50 bombing missions over Germany and Italy. He also served in Japan during the Korean War. Mr. Williams had lived in the Phoenix, Arizona area since the early 1950s. He was employed by the U.S. Postal Service until his retirement. Mr. Williams was a Methodist. He is survived by his sister and brother-in-law Joyce and Cy Roach of Pittsburg, TX; nieces Cindy Roach Strube of Mount Pleasant, TX, Carole Williams Brown of Washington, D.C., and Donna J. McCANN Rev. Melvin C. McCann of Bryant, Arkansas died Tuesday, April 11, 2000. He was 73. He was born August 21, 1926 in Doniphan, Missouri, and was reared in Waldron, Arkansas. He served in the U.S. Navy in World War II. He was a Southern Baptist minister and pastored churches in both California and Arkansas. After serving his last pastorate of 15 years in Corcoran, California, he retired and moved to Arkansas in 1991. He then had the privilege of serving the First Southern Baptist Church in Bryant as minister to senior adults. His ministry covered a span of 32 years. He is survived by his wife, Colene McCann of Bryant; one son, Rickey Gene McCann of Marysville, California; two daughters, Melody Anderson of Bellflower, California and Linda Chastain of Panama, Oklahoma; two brothers, Thomas McCann of Waldron, Arkansas and Eugene McCann of Carson, California; three sisters, Betty Campbell of Oildale, California, Kelsie Taff of Waldron, AR, and Wanda Young of Trinidad, Colorado; one grandson, Lt. He was born December 19, 1931 in Boston, Massachusetts. He was a loving husband, brother, father and grandfather and one of Jehovah's Witnesses. He was born August 13, 1923 in Hamlin, Arkansas. He was the son of the late Wyon T. Foltz and Iva Slocum Foltz. Mr. Foltz has lived in Cross County all of his life. He was employed by the Wynne Fire Department for 22 years, retiring in 1988. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church where he was a member of the Men's Fellowship. He was a member of the Veteran's of Foreign Wars. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII, was in the Ardennes Rhineland Central Europe campaign and received the Purple Heart for wounds received in Belgium on January 22, 1945. He is survived by his wife, Lylda Hedspeth Foltz of Wynne, Arkansas; daughter Phyllis Aspinwall of Waldron, AR; brother, Staton Foltz of Jonesboro, AR; sisters, Flo Davis of Wynne, AR and Arlene Hinton of Memphis, TN; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. She was a 1965 graduate of the University of Arkansas at Monticello and obtained her Masters Degree from Henderson State University. She was a first grade teacher at Moody Elementary in White Hall, Arkansas and a member of White Hall United Methodist Church. Teaching her first grade elementary students was what she loved to teach the most. She taught college level Economics to teachers through a program at UALR, Henderson State University and UAPB.
