She was born July 21, 1918 in Scott County. She was a retired employee of the State of Arkansas and a member of the First Baptist Church of Waldron. Naomi is survived by one sister, Elva Newborn of Waldron, two nephews, Bill Newborn and Paul Newborn both of Waldron, two nieces, Patricia Rose and Linda Vaughn both of Waldron, six great nieces, Elaine Standridge, Jalene Casias, Shannon Hodge, Regina Hutchens, LeAnn Brigance, Michelle Keener and one great nephew, Lynn Newborn. He was born January 25, 1929 near Manfield to Joe DeVine and Martha Little DeVine. He served two years in the U.S. Navy and was stationed in Japan and was a faithful member of the Primitive Baptist Church. He was a retired employee of the Bureau of Reclamation in California. He is survived by his wife, Hazel Devine of Watsonville, California; one daughter Katy Jedlicka of Mt. Hermon, California; two sons, Joe Jr. of San Jose, California and Shane DeVine of Aptos, California; one brother, Tommy DeVine of Tahoe, California; eight grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and a close friend, Edith Kimes, along with many other friends. Memorial contributions may be made to the church of donor's choice. ===================================================================== The Waldron News 3 April 2002 WOODROW WILSON KNIGHT Woodrow Wilson Knight, age 85, of Murfreesboro, formerly of Mena, Arkansas, passed away Friday, March 22, 2002 in Murfreesboro. He was born November 23, 1916 in Edgar County, Illinois, to the late Frances Marion Knight and the late Nellie Bessie Emrick Knight. He was united in marriage to Margaret Helen Soots. Mr. Knight served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a farmer by profession. Mr. Knight was sent for cremation under the direction of the Beasley-Wood Funeral Home in Mena. He is survived by one step-daughter, Eva Robertson; one step-son Russell Lewellen; one grandson, Christopher Lewellen; one granddaughter, Crystal Dawn Marshall; several grandchildren and great- grandchildren. She was buried March 16 in Barstow, California. She joins her parents, Rosa Mae Ammons and James T. (Jim) Ammons, a sister, Bonnie Marie, a brother Edgar, a sister-in-law Clemmie, her husband Elmer Williams, infant son Charles, a son, Marion David (M.D.), a daughter Wanda June and a grandson, Justin in heaven. Grandmother to eight surviving grandchildren, 13 great- grandchildren, two great-great grandchildren. He was united in marriage to Barbara Joann Crittendon on February 15, 1959 at Malden, Missouri. She preceded him in death on June 22, 2000. On September 21, 2001 he was united in marriage to Kathleen Adams at Hot Springs, Arkansas. John Emmett Higgins, Sr. died March 16, 2002 at Methodist Hospital North in Memphis, Tennessee at the age of 69 years, 7 months and 22 days. She was born May 29, 1911 in Battiest, Oklahoma to the late Lee Gordon and the late Leona Phillips Gordon. She was the owner and operator of a restaurant and was a member of the First Baptist Church in Oden, as well as a member of the Oaklawn Jockey Club. She is survived by one daughter, Sondra and her husband Richard Morgan of Boles, Arkansas; one sister, Juanita and her husband Louis Adkins of Bernice, Oklahoma; grandchildren, Angela and her husband David Tallmadge of Boles, Arkansas, James Ray Morgan of Little Rock, Arkansas and Rebecca Morgan of Boles, Arkansas; numerous nieces and nephews; and a host of friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Vernon Lambert and two sons, Vernon Edwin "Sonny" Lambert and infant son, William Eric Lambert. He was born June 15, 1909 in Scott County, Arkansas to Eli Rogers and Molly Martin Rogers. He was united in marriage to Cordie Mae Blackwell. Mr. Rogers was a farmer by profession and a member of the Chant Pentecostal Church in Y-City, Arkansas. Mr. Rogers was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He was the retired owner and operator of Brigance Engine (1946-1997), a veteran of WWII serving in the South Pacific with the Seabees, retired member of Waldron Fire Department, served as Waldron City Alderman, member of Waldron Masonic Lodge for 55 years, and was a member of Waldron First Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his wife Syble and a daughter, Doris. Funeral services were at 4:00 pm Saturday, April 20 at the Waldron First Baptist Church with Rev. Frank Thurman officiating and was followed by interment at Duncan Cemetery with the Waldron Masonic Lodge officiating under the direction of Martin Funeral Home of Waldron. Pallbearers were members of Waldron Masonic Lodge, honorary pallbearers were Eric, Mark, Keith and Alan Brigance, Joe Bingham and Chris Brotherton. He was born February 6, 1941 in Waldron, Scott County, to the late Fred and Clara Hawthorne Evatt. He served in the U.S. Air Force for four years. He was also a certified public accountant and a member of the First United Methodist Church of Conway. He is survived by his wife, Linda Reed Evatt; one son, Robert Clay Evatt of Conway; and one brother, John Fred Evatt, Jrs. of Pine Bluff. He was Fire Chief for Northwest Scott Volunteer Fire Department for four years, was a veteran of the Korean War and was retired from Sears repairs. Mr. Streich will be truly missed by all who knew and loved him. ======================================================================== Scott County Times 8 May 2002 MABLE HOUSE Mrs. Mable Deane Titsworth House, 77, of Board Camp passed away Friday, May 3, 2002 at St. Edward Mercy Medical Center in Fort Smith. She was born July 23, 1924 in Nunley, Arkansas to the late Arch Clark Titsworth and the late Cordie Parker Titsworth. She was united in marriage to Spencer Lee House on September 25, 1943 in Memphis, Tennessee. She became a born again Christian in 1942 and joined the First Baptist Church in Mena where she taught a Sunday School class. She then moved to Jacksonville to work and joined the First Baptist Church there. Later she moved to Memphis and moved her membership to Jackson Boulevard Baptist Church. In Memphis she married Spencer and they moved back to Mena. Mrs. House then went on to California with Spencer, now a sailor, to await his orders for overseas. The war was soon ended and Spencer was discharged in California and they joined the First Baptist Church in Reedley, California. They returned to the Mena and Waldron area for a while and then moved back to California where they attended and joined the First Baptist Church at Sanger. They went back to Waldron and joined the First Baptist Church there. A job at Douglas Aircraft took them to Collinsville, Oklahoma and they joined and worked in the Collinsville First Baptist Church. Moving on to Tulsa they joined the N Lewis Avenue Baptist Church where she taught a class of teenage girls and Spencer surrendered to preach. He was an ordained deacon and filled the pulpit when the opportunity afforded itself. They were also members of Immanuel Baptist Church in Tulsa for a short time. In 1956 they moved to Ft. Worth where he got a job working for Convair Aircraft and also attended Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary and drove to a pastorate near Durant, Oklahoma on weekends. Mrs. House worked with the Baptist Hour where the radio program The Baptist Hour was produced over the air regularly. While there it went under the auspices of Southern Baptists and was known as the Southern Baptist Radio and Television Commission. From there they moved to Lela, Texas where Spencer was a pastor at Lela First Baptist Church, between Shamrock and McClain, Texas. He was later called to Haile Baptist Church near Borger and they moved there. From there they went back to Waldron and Mena, pastoring small rural churches and then to Temple Baptist Church in Waldron as their first pastor. From there to Wichita, Kansas where he worked for Boeing Aircraft and was interim pastor for the First Baptist Church in Florence, Kansas and the area around Wichita. Their membership was at First Baptist Church in Burden, Kansas. They returned to Mena and Spencer served as pastor at Westmoreland Baptist Church and Pine Ridge before moving to Freeport, Texas. At Freeport, Spencer led a construction crew for 13-14 years and retired in 1986. They then became members of the Board Camp Baptist Church and recently became members of the Bible Believers Baptist Church for the last three to four years. Mrs. House was a homemaker, a Christian writer dedicating her life to Christian writing. Her by line has been seen in more than a few Christian publications and some secular magazines and newspapers. She had currently been editing her own publication called Goose Feathers and wrote a weekly column for the Scott County Times. Survivors include her husband, Spencer of the home; two daughters, Sharon Marhanke of Wichita, Kansas and Myrna Deane Martin of Freeport, Texas; two sons, Stanley Morris House of Cherry Hill and John Wade House of Mena; ten grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren. He was born November 19, 1950 at Walnut Ridge, AR, a son of the late Leland Glenn Butler and Dona Mae Henson Butler. He grew up in Muskegon, Michigan and graduated from high school in Paragould, AR. He graduated from Southern Baptist College (now Williams Baptist College) in Walnut Ridge with an Associate's Degree. He also attended Arkansas Tech University in Russellville and was a graduate of Columbia School of Broadcasting. He was in full time church work for 25 years and served churches in Hot Springs, Prescott, East Camden, Stuttgart and Waldron. He had formerly served as music minister for Green Meadows Baptist Church, Shannon Road Baptist Church, Sulphur Springs Baptist Church and Centennial Baptist Church, all in Pine Bluff. At the time of his death he was minister of music at Greenlee Baptist Church. He had been employed as a sales clerk for Sears at the Pines Mall for the past six years. He was preceded in death by an infant son in 1984. She was born December 19, 1924 in Blue Ball, Yell County, Arkansas to the late Tom and Oshie Garner Wilkins. She was a mother, grandmother and poultry-cattle farmer. She attended the Egypt Freewill Baptist Church. She was born January 21, 1923 in Waldron, Arkansas to the late Felix Smith and the late Mima Taylor Smith. She was united in marriage to Edgar Essman for 61 years. Mrs. Essman was a housekeeper at Mena Medical Center, an elderly caregiver after retiring and was a member of the Two-Mile Church of Christ. She was a loving homemaker, wife, mother, sister and grandmother. She is survived by her husband, Edgar Essman of Mena, AR; one son, Truman and his wife, Debra Essman of Mena, AR; three daughters, Vera and her husband Jerry Gaston of Mena, AR, Patsy and her husband George Word of Camden, AR and Linda and her husband Bryan Wyman of Mena, AR; three brothers, Melvin and his wife Betty Smith of Waldron, AR, Lester Smith of Waldron and Jessie Smith of Waldron; four sisters, Francis and her husband Davis Judy of Abbott, AR, Dovie and her husband Charlie Williams of Abbott, AR, Doria and her husband Roy Glen Harrison of Waldron, and Margaret and her husband Jerry McCafferty of Waldron, AR; six grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; one great great grandchild; several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Tabler was born September 20, 1922 in Logan County, near Booneville, Arkansas. She was an employee of Lone Star Army Ammunition Plant during World War II and a waitress. She was preceded in death by her husband, J.L. Tabler; one son, James Tabler, one grandson, Jonathan Weaver, and three brothers, Winfred Wagoner, Paul Wagoner and John Wagoner. Survivors include two daughters, Judy Weaver of Atlanta, Texas and Shirley Tabler Scott of Tyler, Texas; one brother, Rev. Sam Wagoner of Waldron, AR; two sisters, Addie Carmack and Alberta Yates both of Waldron; three grandsons, Sam Tabler, Matthew and Marc Weaver; and one great gandson, Kameron Tabler; and several nieces and nephews.
