The surname is prominent in the northern and eastern areas and could derive from the Scandinavian influence prominent in Scotland and Northumberland, although the Subsidy Rolls of Sussex, England bear first evidence of the name in 1296, Scottish registers show the name appearing in all parts of the country as every burgh had its miller at whose mill the neighborhood grain harvest was ground. Between 1241-1286 one record shows an inquest held at the Castle of Dunfries during the reign of Alexander III investigating the death of an Adam Miller. Joseph Miller, born 1684, was an English actor and comedian who acted in many Shakespeare plays. The arrival of the Miller name in America is represented by a Samuel Miller who sailed from Kent, England and arrived with his family to settle in Boston, Massachusetts in 1640. He married into the Belcher family and is said to have been a "man of large means." They descend from Nicholas MilIer, High Sheriff of Kent, Baron and Nobleman during the reign of Charles I. The Coat of Arms born by the Millers of Kent and Boston is blazoned! "Ermine a fesse gules between three wolves' heads erssed azure." In the late 17th century Louis Miller married a Miss Fry in state unknown but could have been North Carolina. They had issue: Malinda Miller Louis Miller Angeline Miller b 1811 Joshua Miller Johnson Miller Angeline Miller was married about 1826 or 1827 to Hardin George b 1805 in Tennessee. The 1850 census of Arkansas states that Angeline Miller George was born in North Carolina. Fry was an English name which developed in the early 12th century and took root after the 13th century. It was used to indicate a free person who had no obligation to the lord of the manor.
