He attended school at Mount George and sometimes Louvean. An old friend of his said that he could entertain any crowd that he was with by his clever witticism. In 1863, at the age of 18 with his brother Robert, 16, he joined the Union Army Co. F, 3rd Arkansas Cavalry, U. S. A. War between the States. He married three times and had several children. He is buried at Mount George with a Civil War marker at his grave. There is no date of his death. He drew a U. S. pension. On October 4, 1870 he married Angeline Haimes b 1850.
