PERSON was born October 24, 1896 on White Oak mountain in Van Buren County, Arkansas. He was the ninth child and fourth son of Edward and Jennie Person. He attended school near home on the mountain and never left the mountain to attend school as did his brothers and sisters. He and his brother, Joe, helped with the farming and homework. After his marriage he lived near the home and helped his parents. He dated Ethel Eudora Armstead and Joe dated Almedia Beavers. On January 6, 1917 the two couples were secretly married near the Mazzie Campbell farm after a church service had been held that night under a brush arbor. Herbert was conscripted into the army for World War I. He was stationed at Camp Pike in Little Rock, Pvt., 13th Co., 162 Depot Brig., World War I. He never left this camp as he was ill most of the time with a critical asthma condition. He drew a government pension the remainder of his life. He returned home at Christmas in 1918. The secret of his marriage was known by this time so he and his wife, Ethel, lived with his parents until he could build a home nearby. C14- Herbert Neal Person was born February 18, 1921 in Van Buren County, Arkansas. C15- Edith Louise Person was born October 29, 1923 in that county also. C16- Hazel Glee Person was born August 34, 1926 in Van Buren County. In 1932 the family moved to Russellville and there the children attended school. They later moved to Cotton Town in Yell County and lived several years. By 1937 the parents, Herbert and Ethel, had separated. The children remained with their father and Ethel returned to White Oak mountain and lived with her parents. A Mrs. Breshears lived with the children awhile and then Mrs. Ida Conley lived with them for several years. In 1941 the family moved to Wing and lived on the Hignight farm, Herbert built his own house and it was willed to him at the time of his sister Adelaide's death. Due to the asthmatic condition, he had an enlarged heart for several years. When he became ill on September 10, 1966 he was rushed to the Veteran's Hospital in Little Rock but died before midnight of that same date. His funeral was held on September 12, 1966 at Rover Baptist Church. Interment was in Brearley cemetery in Dardanelle beside his sister, Adelaide.
