He was born December 3, 1881 at Lakeview (Potts farm) the son of James J. and Nancy Parr Cooper. He was born in a log house and was delivered by and old Negro woman, Jintz Wells, a midwife. The family bought and lived on a farm near the Arkansas river north of Fowler. They then bought land at old Neely community and moved there before the death of Walter's father in 1886. Nancy was left with three children, George Cooper, Viola Cooper Clark and Walter. A son was born but died soon after the father's death. In 1898 Nancy, Walter and Lee (adopted) moved to White Oak mountain and lived while George drove cattle to Oklahoma. He attended a three months term of school at New Hope with the Person and Phillips brothers. He also attended school at old Neely and went several terms to a Catholic priest in Cleary neighorhood. In 1899 and 1900 the family lived at Nimrod on Fourche River. During these and several more years Walter herded cattle for his brother George. He started farming for himself in 1904 at old Neely on what is now in 1968 known as the W. H. McClure farm. He slowly built up a good sized farm of Arkansas river bottom land. His mother lived with him until her death in 1918. Then his widowed sister, Viola, lived with him until 1941. On April 12, 1938 Walter married Lola Person of Carden Bottom. They lived on the farm for three years and then bought a home in Dardenelle and moved there June 30, 1941. They had no issue. John J. Cooper (Walter's father) owned and operated the "Stump Grocery" store near Breaks Corner in Carden Bottom some time before 1886.
