He is the son of Hollis and Orra Person Ragsdale. He was reared on the farm in Elberta near Dardanelle. He was able to start a tractor and put it in motion at the age of 3. He attended the Dardanelle schools and was an active member of Future Farmers of America. He won several first place prizes with cattle at the Yell County Fair. On May 18, 1954 he finished high school and in September of that year he entered Arkansas Polytechnic College. In February, 1965, he entered the Morrilton Vocational School and graduated in horticulture. In January, 1966, he reentered Tech for another semester. He took over his father's farm in July of 1966 after his father was accidentally shot and incapacitated. In the fall of l966 he was named American Farmer, He went to Kansas City, Missouri to receive the award and was also given $80 and a pin.
