He was born at Mount George the son of Hardin and Angeline George. He attended school at Mount George and Louvean church house. In 1863, at the age of 16, he and his brother, Hardin ÒPeterÓ, joined the War between the States. They were in the Union Army, Co. F., 3rd Arkansas Cavalry, U. S A. He was the son of Hardin and Angeline Miller George. There were 8 brothers and 5 sisters in the family. They attended school at the old Mount George church building and sometimes at Louvean church house. In 1863, at the age of 16, he and his brother, Hardin ÒPeterÓ joined the War between the States. They fought on the side of the north and belonged to the Union Army, Co. F, 3rd Arkansas Cavalry, U. S. A. They both drew government pensions for the remainder of their lives. Robert homesteaded acreage at Mount George after serving in the army #878 application #7269 Robert H. George, south half of southwest quarter of section 8 in township 5, north of range 20 on west in district of sands 80 acres. It held the seal of the United States Government, December 1, 1875 by U. S. Grant, President and signed by D. D. Cone, Secretary. Nettie George Cain, a daughter, has the old deed to the property as the father (Robert) sold 40 acres of the land to his brother, John George. In 1892, or later, Robert traded the other 40 acres for property near Centerville (northwest). This was the home of the family from about 1900 until 1942. Robert married Sarah Greenwood on November 18, 1886. She was born in 1847. They had issue, Franklin, Susie and Lewis. Sarah died in 1875 and was buried at Dacus cemetery, the location is backside. A tombstone was placed at her grave by her son, Lewis, after he was a grown man. Robert then on May 10, 1876 married Nancy Sloan. She was born November 12, 1857. She reared his first three children along with her thirteen, Lum, Lucy, Fannie, Enona, Virdie, Otis, Dick, Ethel, Margaret, Nettie and two infants that died. The family lived at Mount George until after 1892. A few years later they moved to Lakeview community in Carden Bottom. Nettie George was born there November 14, 1897. They later moved near the place where the Webb cotton gin at one time stood on Webb Lane. The family moved to their farm at Centerville just before Nancy passed away February 8, 1901. She was buried in Mount George cemetery. On January 27, 1903, Robert married Timppy Ellar Stephenson Meeks born March 30, 1877. She was a widow with three boys. They had issue, Jack, Bill, Evelyn, Jim and David ÒRedÓ The last familyÕs income was the war pension. Robert died on January 10, 1933 and was buried alongside Nancy, his second wife, at Mount George. At the age of 86 he had out lived seven of his twenty-one children, all brothers and sisters except two or three and two of his wives. On March 21, 1942, Ellar, his third wife, died at the old home near Centerville and was buried alongside Robert at Mount George. The pension stopped at her death and her five children were married so the heirs sold the farm. Lewis George handled the sale of the land and collected all the signatures of the heirs on the deed. B4 Christopher Columbus ÒLumÓ George b 1877 d 1910 m Rebecca Watt and had a son, Jewell. ÒLumÓ died before his son was born on February 17, 1911. He died on Christmas day and was buried at Mount George. His widow and his son moved to California a few years preceding 1968. B5 Lucy George b 1879 d 1952 was reared in Mount George and attended school close by. She married Melvin Crow who was born and reared near Centerville. They moved to Holdenvile, Oklahoma. There they raised their family. They chose to bury their family in Holdenville. B6 Fannie George b 1881 d 19 ? was reared in Mount George and attended school close by. She married Houston Brown and they had one daughter, Lovie. They lived at New Hall community in Carden Bottom when Fannie died. Her husband buried her at Mount George. There is no tombstone, B7 Enona George b 1883 and reared in Mount George and attended school close by. She married Walter Eidson who also was born and raised at Centerville. Walter became a railroad man and the family moved to Booneville, Arkansas. Her two children were reared there and she buried her son, Delon, who died in 1927, there, and then in 1940 her husband was buried in Booneville cemetery. Enona and daughter Ailyen, who is a widow, lives in Phoenix, Arizona in 1968. B8 Virdie Lee George b 1886 d 1964 was born and reared in Mount George also and attended school close by. Virdie was a beautiful lady and very proud. She married Barney McKenzie who was also born near Centerville. They lived in the country for several years. Barney learned the carpenter trade and Virdie was a seamstress. They moved to Dardanelle and lived for many years. They are buried in Brearley cemetery just outside the town of Dardanelle, Arkansas. B10 Henry Otis George b 1888 d 1961 was born and reared at Mount George and attended school close by. He married Ethel Gallimore and had two children. The family lived in Holdenville, Oklahoma where Otis was buried. B11 Elmer Newton George b 1891 d 1956. He was born and reared in Mount George. He lived in Carden Bottom a few years with his family. He married two or three times but died a single man. He lived near his sister, Ethel, in Texas at the time of his death and was buried in Mount George cemetery. B12 Martha Ethel George b 1892 in Mount George but the family moved to Centerville and then to Carden Bottom. They then moved back to Centerville by 1901. Martha Ethel worked away from home sometimes picking cotton in the Arkansas River bottoms. She married Samuel Bishop and they now make their home in Texas in 1968. They have one daughter, Mary Lee, who is married and has a family. B14 Nettie George b 1897 in Carden Bottom near Lakeview community. She lived in Centerville during her adolescence, She moved to Holdenville, Oklahoma where she married William Cain, They made their home there, Bill died in1934 and Nettie remained a widow. She has two adopted children. B17 Jack, B18 Bill and B21 Milton George, with their families, have lived in Ola, Arkansas for a number of years. B19 Evelyn, a registered nurse, took her training at a Little Rock hospital. She married Mort Monger and lived in Louisiana. She died there and was buried there, B20 Herman ÒJimÓ George married a Centerville girl and moved to California where their children were reared. B1 James Franklin George was born August 23, 1870 at Mount George, Yell County, Arkansas. He was the first child and son of Robert Henry and Sarah Greenwood George. His mother died in 1875. He was reared by his stepmother, Nancy Ann Sloan George. He was a blacksmith by trade and attended school at Mount George. There is no data on where he worked as a single man. He married Jennie Armour Whitford October in 1892. Lillie Whitford was his stepdaughter. His first child and son, Robert Leonard George, was born August 21, 1893. Robert Leonard served in the U. S. Armed Forces in World War I and drew a government pension. Leonard married Annie Cravens and they had four children all of whom have been previously listed in this book. Leonard died November 5, 1939 at his parentÕs home in new Neely. Burial was at Mount George. Lester ÒShortÓ George was born February 22, 1895 and married Josie Hefley. Their child was Nina George. He moved to Pine Bluff, Arkansas, died November 18, 1961 and the burial was in Pine Bluff. James ÒPeteÓ George was born in 1905. He married Kate Dunn and had four children also listed previously in this book Frank and Jennie lived at old Neely in 1900. The last years of their lives they owned their home in new Neely. Frank received two broken legs in late life while working at a cotton gin. He died November 19, 1953 at his home about 3 months after the death of his wife. His funeral was held at the Church of Christ in Centerville. Burial was in Ringer cemetery alongside his wife, Jennie. B2 Susie Virginia George was born at Mount George, Yell County, Arkansas on November 9, 1872, the daughter of Robert and Sarah Greenwood George. Her mother, Sarah, died in 1875 and was buried at Dacus cemetery. The marriage records show Sarah to have been born in 1847. Sarah left three young children: Frank age five, Susie age three and Lewis age one year. Robert George married Nancy Sloan in 1876. She helped rear his three older children along with their ten. Susie attended school at Mount George and sometimes attended the Louvean school a few miles away. She married Shelby Lee Armour on December 15, 1889. They first lived at the old Jesse Mashburn place in old Liberty Hall community. They then moved to Mount George and lived in a house which belonged to her father, Robert George. Bertha Mae Armour was born February 17, 1891. Soon after the birth of Bertha they moved to the Buck Armour farm at old Liberty Hall. A house was built on one corner of the land for them. The place was near the Sherrid Merritt farm. Here Clarence Eugene Armour was born July 25, 1893 and Bazzil Armour in 1895 and Tommie Armour in 1897. The two younger boys died and were buried at Mount George. Although Bazzil received a bad burn when he fell into the fireplace it was believed that this did not cause his death. Susie and Shelby Lee with their two children moved to Carden Bottom near Lakeview community to farm. Their house at old Liberty Hall went to Buck and Molly Adams Armour. Shelby Lee acquired spinal meningitis and died February 16, 1900. The corpse was sent to Mount George for burial. The weather was so bad that only Frank and Lewis George made the trip by wagon and team. Susie and children went to old Neely to live in a house in the yard of Frank and Jennie George. Frank was a brother of Susie and Jennie a sister of Shelby Lee. The children were double cousins. On July 3, 1901 she married C. F. Hulsey of Fowler. He had lost his wife and had three children, Claudie, Maudie and Bill. With their children they lived near the place where the Carden Bottom High School now stands in 1968. James Herbert Hulsey was born April 6, 1902. Ethel Cleo Hulsey was born December 3, 1903. Elma Hulsey was born about two years later, maybe 1905, without a mouth palate. Eathel Hulsey probably was born around 1908. She was a baby at the time of her motherÕs death. She died soon after her mother did. Allegedly she did not receive proper care from the other older children after her mother died. She died of a bowel complaint. Elma only lived a short time due to the fact that she did not have a palate in her mouth and could not swallow. July 11, 1910 Susie died at her home near Lakeview schoolhouse with what they then called Òcongestion.Ó Jennie George asked G. F. Hulsey to bury Susie at Mount George alongside her first husband Shelby and also her relatives who were buried there. He promised to take her there but in the meanwhile he made preparations for a grave at Harris cemetery at Cotton Town. G. Frank Hulsey who was born August 10, 1858 died January 4, 1912 of hemorrhage of the lung, He was buried alongside Susie at Harris cemetery. His property was heired by the Hulsey children. Herbert, Ethel, Claudie, Maudie and Bill. Bertha and Clarence ÒJakeÓArmour did not receive any of the estate. After G. F. HulseyÕs death, Herbert, age nine, and Ethel, age eight, went to live with their Uncle Lewis and Aunt Pearl George at new Neely. Bertha Armour had married John Person in 1907 and she was living at Okay, Arkansas in Van Buren County. Clarence ÒJakeÓ Armour was single until 1919. He lived alternately with different relatives, mainly his Uncle Frank and Aunt Jennie George at new Neely. Claudie Hulsey married Jack Tucker about 1907. They had several children but have no data other than that on Sid Tucker. Jack Tucker died some years before 1925. Claudie Tucker lived several years later. Maudie Hulsey married Frank Pitts about l913. Frank was born October 23, 1891 and was killed by a train at Conway, Arkansas on September 4, 1925 and was buried in Harris cemetery. He and Maudie had six children. However, only three lived to be adults. They are Burton, Grace and Louise Pitts. Maudie married Bud Boyce later and had three children. Bill Hulsey married Floy Tucker. They had three children, Lorena, Son and Skinny. Floy died while her children were small. Bill then married Minnie Porter and had several children by her. Their children are in Tulsa, Oklahoma in 1968. Bill died about 1957 and is buried in Tulsa in a cemetery unknown. Susie George joined the Church of Christ at an early age, but after her marriage to G. F. Hulsey she joined the Baptist Church. The cousins that were contacted concerning this data all made mention of Susie George being a beautiful woman in character as well as in looks. B3 Lewis Taylor George was born January 7, 1874 in Mount George, Yell County, Arkansas. He was the son of Robert Henry and Sarah Greenwood George. His mother died in 1875. Lewis, being only 1 year old at the time of her death, and Frank and Susie were reared by their stepmother, Nancy Ann Sloan George. Lewis first married Lillie Williams b 1877 d 1901. His second wife was Ellen Anderson b 1581 d 1903. She gave birth to Eunice George February 2, 1903. After the death of Ellen Anderson George he married Pearl Gayden Jenkins born December 13, 1877 and died November 25, 1961. They had a daughter, Mabel, and two other infants. All died as infants. They reared Herbert and Ethel Hulsey along with LewisÕ daughter, Eunice. Lewis bought land at new Neely and they had a comfortable living. He also bought forty acres of land in the Rio Grande Valley in Texas. The family moved there after 1924 as Ethel had already married Sewell Dean. Eunice and Herbert moved to the valley. Eunice married Elmer Passmore about 1925 or 1926. Lewis and Pearl returned to Arkansas before 1927. EuniceÕs son, Spencer Passmore, was born about 1928 at new Neely. He married Margaret Ann Hodges of Dardanelle, Arkansas. Her son, Robert Passmore, was born about 1931 at new Neely. He married Rita Garrett, a native of Texas. Eunice George dated John Cofer at the time Ethel Hulsey dated Sewell Dean. Lewis George died December 17, 1946 in Texas. He was buried at Mount George. C James Herbert ÒHubÓ Hulsey was the son of G. Frank and Susie George Hulsey. He was born April 6, 1902 in Carden Bottom, Yell County, Arkansas. After the death of his father on January 4, 1912 Herbert and his sister, Ethel, made their home with an uncle and aunt, Lewis and Pearl George at new Neely. They, with their cousin Eunice George, attended school at new Neely. The schoolhouse was across the highway from the Dr. Herbert Jackson home as it now stands in 1968. Herbert helped with the farming and moved with his uncle and aunt to Harlington, Texas (Rio Grande Valley) around 1924. They farmed while living in the valley. Before 1927, the Georges moved back to their farm at new Neely, Arkansas. Herbert stayed on with the Lee Wardlow family and helped with their farming at Harlington far several years. He later went to live with his sister ( Ethel Dean) and family at Wellman, Texas and later was inducted into the army as Pvt. James H. Hulsey #38105752 at Lubbock, Texas on June 3, 1942. He was trained at Camp Crowder in Missouri as a switchboard operator in the Signal Corp. He left the U. S. for duty in North Africa, departing from Norfolk, Virginia on October 24, 1942. He arrived in Fedela, French Morocco on November 8, 1942 and served in the North African Invasion. He left for the U. S. on April 6, 1943. Upon arrival, he was honorably discharged on April 29, 1943. His record shows excellent character in World War II. When he returned to the home of his Uncle Lewis George from service he entered a hospital for nervous disorders in Benton, Arkansas where he stayed a short time. Upon leaving the hospital he went to Wellman, Texas to live in the home of his sister, Ethel Dean. There he met and married Ollie Whittington born 1904, a widow with a grown daughter. They had their home in Lubbock, Texas. Soon after his marriage he was hospitalized in VeteranÕs Hospital in Amarillo, Texas for a year or more. On January 6, 1959 he died of cancer of the bone. Services for James H. Hulsey were held January 7, 1959 at South Side Church of Christ in Lubbock. Interment was in Resthaven Memorial Park Cemetery. Herbert always enjoyed hunting and had dreamed of going to Africa for big game hunting. His dream of going there was partially realized but the game was not the kind he had hoped to hunt. C Ethel Cleo Hulsey was the daughter of G. Frank and Susie George Hulsey. She was born December 3, 1903 near Lakeview community in Carden Bottom, Yell County, Arkansas. She was reared by an uncle and aunt, Lewis and Pearl George, after the death of her parents. She, with her brother Herbert and cousin Eunice George, attended school at new Neely. She was a talented musician and played the organ well. She worked in the field at crop time and helped with the homework. She married Benton Sewell Dean on December 6, 1924. They were of the Church of Christ faith. After their marriage they lived in his fatherÕs home ( Joe Dean) in old Liberty Hall community near Centerville on the Carden Bottom highway, Soon after her marriage she took flu and spent a longtime in bed. Finally she spent some time at Bonneville Sanatorium. Sewell Dean was hired to teach school at Gravelly (Yell County). He taught two or three terms and Ethel joined him and they lived in the Gravelly neighborhood. It was at that time that Ada Sue Dean was born on April 21, 1927. Later they moved back to Centerville to the Dean home. Then the house burned. Ethel expecting a child, went to the home of her half-sister, Bertha Armour Person in Carden Bottom and there Herbert Anderson Dean was born November 11, 1928. Lola and Orra Person did the first laundry after his birth with the old-fashioned tub and rub board while their mother, Bertha, did the housework. From the Person home Ethel and family went to Centerville to live. Two or three years later they moved to Texas. They lived in several places before settling in Wellman near Brownsfield, Texas. There they bought a home with four or five acres of land. They ran a dairy and sold milk to the town, also had a washiteria. Sewell was in poor health so it was mostly EthelÕs responsibility to rear the children. Ada Sue received a degree from Abilene Christian College. Herbert Hulsey and Joe Dean lived with them at one time. SewellÕs health required a major stomach operation that caused his death October 11, 1954. Ethel was left a widow with two children. She worked at a cotton gin in Wellman and finally became Tax Assessor and Collector for the Wellman School District. She taught herself to type. She was a self-made person who was capable and efficient in any work she undertook She played her role as wife and mother well. Ada Sue married Don Neilson, a Church of Christ minister and they had five children (1968). Herbert Anderson married Mary Jo Clark and they have three children in 1968. Joe and Ada Forth Dean with their family of four children, all natives of Tennessee, settled in the old Liberty Hall community, Yell County, Arkansas. The mother, Ada b 1871 d 1923, was interred in Petillo Hill cemetery. The father, Joe, died at the home of a son, Sewell Dean, in Texas years later but before 1954. The children of Joe and Ada Porch Dean were: (1) Mildred Dean b 1898 d 1962, She was a schoolteacher and dietician. She had a son, Jimmy Dean Petillo. Her burial was in Petillo Hill cemetery. (2) Benton Sewell Dean b January 7, 1900 d October 11, 1954. He was a school teacher and later a dairyman. He married Ethel Hulsey on December 6, 1924. They lived part of their married life in Arkansas and the last in Texas. They had two children, Ada Sue b 1927 and Herbert A. b 1928. His interment was in Brownsfield, Texas. (3) Bertha Dean married Mr. Peeler who died several years ago in Texas. (4) Anderson Dean married Anna Belle Foster of Centerville. They moved to Texas where Anderson died before 1944. They had three daughters.
