Probably the men were brothers or cousins. It is not known for certain. Jane Smith, a cousin of the John Speed Smith children, lived in this location. She married Alex Masters and reared her children in Dardanelle. The John Speed Smith family moved from Indiana and settled in old Neely community, Yell County, Arkansas. This community was south of Dardanelle. They rented land and never owned their own home. A bachelor, Uncle Hardy Lipps, moved with them or soon afterwards. John Speed and Julia were the parents of ten children. Five lived to be grown. Julia Ann Lipps Smith died at her home on March 25, 1883. John Speed Smith died at the same place on October 14, 1884. Jennie was the first married daughter. That left Ballard with his brother Frank and sister Minnie. Martha married a short time before her fatherÕs death. Interment for the parents was only a few miles away from the family home at Bata Mill cemetery at new Neely. Their graves are east and close to the old road where the old district gate once stood. They are on a high bank and under a huge oak tree with rocks that mark the graves. Jane Smith Masters and her parents moved to Arkansas from Columbus, Bartholomew County, Indiana.
