Submitted by The Rev. Cynthia Vold Forde Information concerning Elijah McDonald and his two wives Martha B. Brooks and Martha Elizabeth Johnston comes from Cynthia Vold Forde, Wayne McDonald, and Linda McDonald Miller. Linda and Wayne descend from Elijah thru his wife Martha Elizabeth Johnston and Cynthia descs. thru Martha B. Brooks. ELIJAH MCDONALD Elijah is a bit of an enigma. We have been able to learn but little about him. We know from census material that he was born in Talbot County, GA in 1834. He married Martha B. Brooks in 1856 in Pike County, AL; Martha, Elijah and three children moved to Montgomery County, AR between 1871 and 1874. Martha B. Brooks McDonald either died in Montgomery County or enroute to Montgomery County, AR. Elijah remarried Martha Elizabeth Johnston. Both are buried in Montgomery County, AR. The name has been spelled McDaniel and McDonald interchangeably. FEDERAL CENSUS RECORDS: (Brad McDonald writes that he found an 1830 Fairfield County, SC Census that enumerated William McDaniel) 1840 TALBOT COUNTY, GA CENSUS Head of Household Ages of Males Ages of Females 0-5 6-10 11-15 16-20 41-45 11-15 41-45 William McDaniel 2 2 1 2 1 1 1 Sarah would have been 43, John 20, William 17, Sarah 13, Hiram 12, Ervin 8, Elijah 6, Elisha 2, James 1 This William Head of Household also held 11 slaves. This family matches the Sarah McDaniel family for ages in 1840 compared with ages in 1850. (?) Highly likely this is the same family. William McDaniel must have died between 1840 and 1850. His death could have been after the birth of Mary M. or just prior to her birth in 1841 1850 FEDERAL CENSUS CHAMBERS COUNTY, AL It is believed that the 1850 census of Chambers County, AL shows Elijah listed with a widowed mother named Sarah; the name of McDaniel has been used interchangeably. Name Place of Birth Age Other Information Sarah McDaniel SC 54 Sarah SC 23 Hiram SC 22 Ervin SC 22 Elijah GA 16 Elisha GA 12 James M. GA 11 Mary AL 9 Caroline Not Given 20 Wife of Hiram Note: Marriage bond for Hiram and Caroline found. William McDaniel was second bondsman. 1860 FEDERAL CENSUS PIKE COUNTY, AL: Eiljah McDonald and family are listed in the 1860 Census for Pike County, Monticello Township, Alabama. Also listed in Pike County, Monticello Township, Alabama is Sarah McDonald and family and William McDonald as follows. 1860 Census Pike County, Monticello Township, Alabama Name Place of Birth Age Other Information Sarah McDonald SC 63 John SC 40 Sarah SC 33 Elisha GA 23 James GA 20 Mary M. GA 18 Sarah A. Al 15 Nancy Al 12 WM J. AL 11 Note the names and ages for Sarah McDonald, head of household, Sarah, Elisha, James and Mary between the two census. It would appear that this is Elijah's family. I suspect that John is the eldest child and that Sarah A., Nancy and WM. J. are his children. 1860 Census Pike County, Monticello Township, Alabama Name Place of Birth Age Other Information Wm. McDonald SC 36 Cynthia GA 36 Celia M. AL 13 General J. AL 12 Isham J. AL 9 WM. The family members were: Summary of 1850 Census information leads to the following conclusion: Wife - Sarah McDonald/McDaniel, widow of William 1. John 2. William 3. Sarah 4. Hiram 5. Ervin 6. Elijah 7. Elisha 8. James M. 9. Mary M. 10. Sarah A. 11. Nancy 12. William Jr. (maybe a grandson) John could have been on his own in 1850 - Chambers Co, AL William - 37 could have been on his own or dead in 1860 - Pike Co. Hiram - 32 could have been on his own or dead in 1860 - Pike Co. Ervin - 28 could have been on his own or dead in 1860 - Pike Co. Elijah - 26 on his own, married to Martha Brooks in 1860 - Pike Co. - living down the road Family history tells us that he was one of seven brothers who all served as he did in the CSA. He was listed in the 1890 census of Arkansas, Montgomery County, Ouaticha Township: Father born in South Carolina. Mother born in South Carolina. According to the 1890 census Elijah could read, but not write. On October 23, 1856, Elijah married Martha B. Brooks, daughter of Jacob Rutledge Brooks, a legislator for Pike County, AL, and his wife, Rebecca Jarrett Isabella Sappington. Elijah and Martha were married in Pike County, AL with both of them being 22 years of age. The marriage bond was signed by Caleb Sappington Brooks, older brother of Martha. Martha Bankston Brooks was one of few women who received a full education. Jacob R. Brooks said, "My wealth is in the education of my children, all of them, daughters and sons." 1860 Federal Census, Pike County, Monticello Twp. AL In 1860, Elijah and Martha are enumerated on the Federal Census: Listed on the 1860 Census for Pike Co., Alabama. 8th Census-Roll 21, Vol. 11, Film # 080 3021, Monticello Township, Pg. 185-4 Sept 1860 - # 1286. Listed as a farmer with 185 Acres of land, Birth place = Georgia Martha-wife- age 26, born in Georgia Children: Rebecca age 3, William J. age 2 both born in Alabama. * See Elijah, attached document 1861, Elijah enlisted in the CSA in Escambia County. During this time, Martha received an allotment from the Govt. of $100.00 per month while he was in the service. Elijah was wounded twice during his service to the confederacy and returned home in 1866. * See Federal Census 1870, Bullock County, AL, Martha and Elijah are enumerated with three children: Caleb, Rebecca, 13, and Laura. Evidently, William died prior to this census. Sometime following the census, Martha and her family made the decision to move West towards AR or TX as so many did following the War between the States. Post Civil War South was devastated. It is unknown whether Martha arrived at their destination or if she died in AL prior to departure. She died between 1870 and 1874. CSA: Along with all eligible men of his age, Elijah enlisted in the CSA: Enlisted: Private Company E, Alabama Volunteers-1st. Regiment, July 26, 1861 at Camp Ala or Alo Ffla, by Col. Steadman Paid by Capt. McClue or McCluer. Station Port Hudson, La. July 6, 1863- 1st Light Cavalary, Co. E. 1st Regiment of Alabama Volunteers. Ladies Hospital, Montomery, Alabama, July 1 or 7, 1864 - E. McDonald, Co. E, 1st Regiment, Alabama Volunteers-dischared and ordered to report to command. Elijah was a member of Company "E", 1st. Alabama (or Cavalry - may have been a Sgt.) Infantry CSA. He applied for a Confederate Veterans Pension in Montgomery County, Arkansas in 1901. His widow Martha E. McDonald applied for a Conferate Widows Pension in 1904 after Elijah's death. Grandson Coy O. McDonald stated, December 11, 1999, that Elijah was wounded during the Civil War and taken prisoner. His brother was also taken prisoner and died in prison. Burl Eugene McDonald, son of James T. McDonald stated, December 12, 1999, that Elijah was held prisoner at Rock Island, Illinois Prison and his brother Frank(?) is buried at the prison cemetery. Burl also stated that the discharge papers listed Elijah as Union. That was because all prisoners where discharged as Union. Elijah arrived in Greenwood, Arkansas with three children. One son and one daughter. Appearently his wife had died somewhere between Alabama and Arkansas. MISCELLANEOUS MEMOS REGARDING ELIJAH MCDONALD: Memo from Wayne McDonald, a descendant: I am still searching for Elijah McDonald/McDaniel. One of my distant cousins has some of the original war records that Elijah had with him at the time of his death. Two of the records list him as Elijah McDaniel, they are both related to discharges from Hospitals. Two of the records list him as McDonald. They are the Oath's of allegiance from the United States of America at Camp Douglas, and the state of Alabama. He is listed as McDonald on the 1860 Pike County, AL census and the 1870 Bullock County, AL census. We believe we have found him on the 1850 Chambers County, AL. census listed as McDaniel, living with his mother and siblings. If this is true, I am looking for civil war records of John, William, Hiram, Ervin, Elisha and James M. McDaniel. We believe we have found Hiram and Elisha as killed in the war. They were killed at Nashville, the same place Elijah was captured. Memo regarding marriage information from Elijah's second marriage: Marriage info came from Elizabeth Johnston McDonald's bible (Mattie). Story of someone taking in Rebecca came from Retha Looney. There are several interesting items to be noted. Muster Roll (No dsate) for Company E, Rough and Ready Pioneers, 1st Regiment, Alabama Volunteers, in the service of the Confederate States for 12 months unless sooner discharged. All of the Officers are from Union Springs, Macon County, Alabama (Currently the County Seat of Bullock County. Union Springs was in Macon County prior to 1867). Bullock County was developed from Macon, Pike and Montgomery Counties. The secretary of the company was James T. Brooks, age 29, joined for duty at Barrances, Fla, Escambia County. (Age on the 1850 census, taken in September, is given as 20) Note: Karen Bullard told me that the Brooks family were all educated and that two of the children became school teachers. Elijah McDaniel, age 26, joined for duty at Barrances, Fla, Escambia County. (Age on the 1860 census, taken in September, is given as 25) Seaborn H. Brooks, age 20, joined for duty at Barrances, Fla, Escambia County. ( On the 1860 census Elijah McDonald is listed in order of dwelling visitation as number 1268 and as family number 1286 in the order of visitation. Seaborn R. Brooks age 49 is listed as in order of dwelling visitation as number 1272 and as family number 1290 in the order of visitation.) Seaborn H. could have been son, although I did not find him listed on any census I reviewed. The Release from Madison House Hospital, May 28th, 1864 has the name Elijah McDaniel a Private of company E of the 1st regiment of Alabama Volunteers. The release from Ladies Hospital at Mongomery, Alabama dated July 7, 1864 has the name E. McDaniel, Private, Company E, 1st. Reg. Ala. Vol. Additonal musings, Union Springs is 9 miles north of the town of Scottland, township on the 1870 census for Elijah. The town of Perote (township listed on 1870 census for Jacob R. Brooks) is 7 miles south of Scottland. The township of Monticello (Township listed for Elijah on 1860 census) is 11 miles south of Perote. The above evidence makes it difficult to believe that the Muster Roll I received from the State of Alabama Department of Archives and History does not apply to Elijah. I believe it does. I find it curious that Martha's family refers to Elijah as McDaniel on this Muster Roll land on the Estate Settlement for Caleb S. Brooks. Are we missing something in the pronunicatin of McDonald/McDaniel that occurred during the mid 1800's? Another side note. The records from the State of Alabama Department of Archives and History did not give me the sheet(s) between James T. Brooks and Elijah. If we were able to compare the census rolls of Pike, Macon and Montgomery Counties for 1860 with this Muster Roll we may see many more names from that same area. Spent a long day copying everthing I could find with the name McDonald on it. Also items I found with Jacob or Caleb S Brooks. One of the more interesting things I noted was in the Estate Settlement for Caleb S. Brooks. Adm. appointed Jan. 19, 1866. In this document the Heirs are listed. Martha M. (B) McDaniel, wife of Elijah McDaniel, residing in Montgomery County. This may explain why I could not find Elijah and Martha in either Pike or Bullock Counties in the 1866 State census. I only looked in Pike and Bullock, not Montgomery. There are other listings with both McDonald and McDaniel pertaining to the same family. Memo from Linda Miller: 1900 FEDERAL CENSUS MONTGOMERY COUNTY, AR: I went to our local LDS history library this evening and found Elijah & Martha Elizabeth on the 1900 census. She is listed as having 4 children, with 3 living (our grandfathers). That love letter may have been from a former marriage - interesting!!!! Film # 1240069 Montgomery Co, Arkansas, Township - Ouachita Dwelling # 32, Family # 32 Eliaha McDownel - born 1834 in Georgia - parents both SC - still farming at 66, owned the land free of mortgage, could read, but not write; wife Martha born in 1842 in Tennessee, parents from NC & SC, could read and write, mother of 4, with 3 children living; 2 sons living at home - James T and Frank - both listed as having been born in AR - did farm work. I will recheck the census later for Brooks, other McDonalds, the 1st children, and Johnstons. The librarian suggested that I try the 1910 census for Martha E. to verify the info from this one. She also gave me some info for finding the Liberty Cem. listing. Info received from a query I posted in the Choctaw Nation - Indian Territory. The volunteer there is making me an entire sheet copy and will mail to me. I will make copies for you too and mail them after I get it. Check out the fact that Laura was born in MS in 1871?????? Do you think this is a match?? Maybe we can trace a marriage record for the daughter or find Steve and Laura on the next census, along with Steve and Laura. Laura: Today, I looked up possible descendants of Laura Neff Payne's only daughter, Manila... and wrote some email notes to everyone in FT, Smith that had the name Neff. Long shot! "I found Steve Paine and his wife Laura on the 1900 Choctaw Nation, I. T. census but I never could match up a McDonald to the dates you gave in your query. Stephen was 36 yrs old born in AR, ,AR, AR. Laura A. 29 yrs old born in Ms, GA, Ga. Married 15 yrs with one child and living. Daughter Annie L. 13 years old born in Indian Territory." McDonald/McDaniel As you can tell I have not been working on any Genelogy for some time. However, a Jamie Peacock (jamiepeacock@prodigy.net) sent me some information she obtained about Talbot County. The item that struck me first was the reference of marriage November 19, 1843 of Cynthia Dees to William McDaniel. This could be the William and Cynthia McDonald listed in the 1860 census for Monticello Township, Pike County Alabama. Their ages are listed as 36 in the 1860 census, which would have made them 19 or 20 if they married in 1843. This is the family that contained General J. McDonald (Brad's family). This could be a breakthrough of sorts. Talk with you soon. Wayne The Rev. Cynthia Forde, D. Min. 25487 Old Howth Road Hempstead, Texas 77445
