Steed, native Arkansan of imposing stature and persistent energy and forcefulness, has become one of St. Francis County's most prominent business figures. As the efficient and outstanding Sect. Treasurer of the Forrest City Production Credit Association, Mr. Steed has not only ably directed the association in establishing one of the most successful records in the nation but also has made substantial contributions in the civic affairs of the county. In recognition of his ability and leadership, he was recently elected to the important office of President of the St. Francis County Farm Bureau. He was born in Delight, Arkansas on June 28, 1908, the son of James Thomas Sr., and Rosa (Watson) Steed, After attending Murfreesboro (Ark. ) High School. he studied at Magnolia A. & M. and later received his B. S. Degree at the University of Illinois. While studying for his M. S. Degree at the University, he laugh vocational agriculture at Arthur, Illinois. In 1941 he became Credit Examiner for the Production Corporation of St. Louis. Holding several other offices, he came to Forrest City in Jan. 1947 for his present position. On Oct. 9, 1936, he married Miss Ruby Garner of Delight, daughter of Tom and Laura (Rather) Garner, and to this union has been born a son, James Thomas Steed II, now a student in the Forrest City High School. In addition to his duties, he operates a farm with over 1000 acres for growing cotton, rice, soybeans, feed crops, and livestock. The Steeds are members of the First Baptist Church.
